Issue 3.1 Editorial: What's next for RPG Maker?
What's next for RPG Maker?

For this issue, the RPGMM staff was asked what next "crowning achievement" they would like to see come out of the RPGM series.

Interesting ideas. But will they ever come true? We can only hope.

I am an avid supporter of always brining something NEW to the RPG Maker playing field. Personally, I have no HUGE preference on what I would really like to see done, other than it be something completely original, innovative and fun. Far to often the word "innovative" is thrown around when the end product is nothing more than the same old thing, but slightly enhanced. OOH! Amazing!

When I say I want to see something "new" I really mean it. I want my jaw to hit the ground. I want to think, "You have got to be kidding me! How is that even possible?" This has already happened many times with the RPG Maker genre. The most recent example was "Thatguy's" weapon trick, in which any RPGM3 character can equip any weapon. Prior to the RPGM3 release it was constantly repeated that there would be NO WAY to equip any weapon other than the preset class-type to any one character. So look what happens just a few short weeks later--we have chickens weilding spears and little girls with huge broadswords. If that isn't new, I don't know what is!

What I would like to see? Simple.
I've been supporting this idea forever. Greater customization on console RPG Makers. Maybe a magic pengel type system, in which you can connect parts somehow. Or a wider variety of character models. Anything. They've been reducing customization since RPG Maker 2, in my eyes. Bring back the anime maker from RPG Maker 1 in a new format! I'm growing so tired of the console RPG Makers for this reason. Customization is important on console Makers too, not just the PC ones.

That is a good question.
The way I see it, the RPG Maker community is always pumping out loads of great ideas, so coming out with the next big thing would probably be hard to do. However, if I had to pick something I'd like to see, then I'd have to choose something for each of the console Makers that I'm familiar with. For RPG Maker 1, I would like to see another genre-bending game like Fu-Fu, Checkers Plus! or the shooter Rogue Star (though a demo). However, I would love to see a regular RPG done with the meticulous care that Square-Enix takes. As much as possible for RM1. I wonder if anyone'd take the challenge? For RPG Maker 2, I might as well not say anything. The guys who use the Maker are crazy. In a good way. But really, the next thing I want to see on this one would be a strategy/RPG like Shining Force II on it. I would almost pay to see that. As for RPG Maker 3, I want someone to break the 100 characters limit. It may not even be possible, but who thought there'd be a Weapon Trick Video? Overall, I guess you could say, the biggest advancement that I would like to see happen would be storytelling. The community needs to remember that RPGs are stories first. It's a great feeling to start making your game, but please don't neglect the story. It's the main thing that can either keep a player interested in the trials of your hero, or bore them to tears. Let's try to make classics!

I would like to see a "save the world" game that isn't as cliched as the others.

I would like to see a duplicate of a console game. Like Earthbound, ff chrono trigger or super mario rpg
