The hotly anticipated Nintendo title has a launch date, more newcomers and use of amiibos.
Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and 3DS are some of Nintendo’s most anticipated games, and fans finally got a chance to learn more about the fourth installation of the series.
So, what did we learn about Super Smash Bros? Let's start with the 3 new characters that were revealed during the first day of E3.
Mii Fighters
Players will finally be able to use their Mii characters as one of three different fighters: Swordsman, Brawler or Gunner, and will be able to choose one of three special attacks for each of their B moves. According to Sakurai, Miis won’t be usable when playing online unless you play in the “With Friends” mode, to prevent bullying.
Palutena
The goddess Palutena, from the Kid Icarus series also makes her debut as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Just like the Mii fighters, she is able to select between 3 different moves for her special B button attack.
Pac Man
The round, yellow legend also makes his debut as the third, third party character revealed so far. Sporting his Pac-Land look, Pac Man makes homage of the original Pac Man game and other arcade classics by using 8-bit ghosts and turning into the classic limbless Pac Man to perform some of his attacks.
Amiibos
The Nintendo Digital Event also introduced amiibos, shown along with the Mii Fighters. These figurines will be compatible with other titles, and their function in Super Smash Bros is to have a trainable CPU opponent fight for you (or fight you) so it can improve their stats and gain levels. Amiibos are purely optional and there has been no mention of characters or any other content that can only be unlocked through these figurines.
Smash Run
The 3DS only mode was also further explained, and fully playable at E3. This mode will feature a large map where 4 player placed at random locations will fight monsters from different series. The idea of this mode is to defeat as many monsters as you can to get stat boosting power ups for 5 minutes. Once these 5 minutes are up, all four players will duke it out with their boosted characters.
Customization
For the first time in Smash Bros, players will also be able to customize their characters’ special attacks and equip items that will also alter their stats (In a similar fashion to stickers in Super Smash Bros. Brawl) These customized characters won’t be usable in the “For Glory” online mode
The Super Smash Bros. website has been updated with information on these new game modes. The U.S. launch date for the 3DS version is October 3, 2014

Smash Run looks like a great addition to the franchise. Especially since you can play it, enhance your characters, and move them back and forth between 3DS and Wii U versions. Or so the guys playing it said while hosting the Treehouse event. Not sure if that can be considered officially announced or not... Hopefully it is a seamless experience. Even with cloud saves and back ups.
