In the year 2000, Agetec released the first RPG Maker software for Playstation.
This new tool inspired creativity and challenged users to make the RPG of their dreams…
We all know where that led. As games appeared, some were good, and some…weren't so good.
A contest of skill was not a scarce thing during the age of RPGM1.
These contests were amazing events, RPG Makers gave all they could to
win the prize. The promised prize, usually a material possession, was not
what was important, but the pride of being title the number one creator!
Winners of these contests were crowned gods of their instrument, and
amassed great amounts of fame through their games. Some contest winners
worth mentioning are the talented Dave Carter (Nano-Bot), and the equally
astounding Alzar (Remote Control).
The age of these contests died away when Valkysas held the last contest
for RPG Maker at the RPG Maker Pavilion...
But then in 2003, RPG Maker 2 was released! This amazing sequel put a
whole new level of possibilities into the hands of creators! What new
and exciting games could be made?
Now, the Staff of the Official RPG Maker Magazine is proud to announce
the first ever contest for RPGM2. Do you have what it takes to create the
best traditional RPG ever? An awe-inspiring story supplemented with amazing
cutscenes and true to life characters? Are you ready to prove to the world
that you can make a magnificent and Dramatic Role Playing Game rivaling
even those of the well-known Squaresoft?
Well, I just have one thing to say to you!
Go somewhere else, because the Mag has decided to take things
in a completely different direction!
That's right, the mag has decided to break out of the ordinary, "Who
can make the best RPG?" theme and come up with a new one. As the cover
of this issue states, the objective of this contest is to make the craziest
game you can come up with. And now onto the specifics!
RPG Maker Magazine: Make the Craziest Game Contest
Rules:
- Anyone, with any game, is eligible for the contest. This means that
even if your game has been hosted on the Internet before, you may still
enter it into the contest.
- A single participant may enter only ONE (1) game for contest purposes.
Any further games sent by the same participant will be reviewed only.
EXCEPTION: If a participant sends their entry, and then decides they would
like another game entered, they may send the new game ALONG with a request
to use the new game instead of the old for contest purposes.
- Your entry can be sent to
contest@rpgmmag.com The deadline for entry
into the contest is November 15, 2004. We will accept entries for one week
after this deadline, but you will automatically be docked 10 points from
your final score. NO EXCEPTIONS!
- Entry is open to games created both on RPGM and RPGM2. You will not
receive an advantage for using either of the programs. Both will be judged
by the same standards.
- GAME LENGTH: To help create a constant in the reviewing process, we
ask that all submitted games stay be at least 1 hour in length. There is
no max play time.
- BONUS POINTS: Bonus points will be provided for a number of things.
Including the best use of an RPGMM acronym in your game, (For Example:
Radioactive Productive Gaming Mystery Machine.) and the strangest original
character. Others will only be known by the judges...mwahaha!
- Although Staff of the RPG Maker Magazine may enter their Crazy RPG to
be judged, they are not eligible to win the prize.
Games will be accepted in the following formats:
Dexplorer Saves (.gme)
X-Port Saves (.xps)
Sharkport Saves (.sps)
Max Drive Saves (.max)
Objectives and Scoring:
Your objective is to come up with the craziest idea possible, and make it
into a game. Games will be judged on the normal mag reviewing system.
(Found here: Review FAQ)
but with an added
category of Craziness, which will be weighted on a 100 scale. So even if
you score poorly on the actual review, the craziness of your game may give
you a second chance.
Presentation: 25/25
Features: 25/25
Debugging: 25/25
Fun: 25/25
Craziness: 100/100
For a possibility of 200 total points.
The Judges
As in every contest you will ever enter, you want to appeal to the judges
more than anyone else, because if the contest judges don't like the game,
you are out of luck. That is why we want to take a minute to introduce you
to those that will be judging your hard work, and tell you a little about
their comedy preferences.
Lord Ixzion, RPGMM Editor in Chief:
LiX is the one and only creator of RPG Maker Magazine. Started January
31st, 2002, he has been bringing fair reviews, not to mention plenty of
features to the site for a long time. He can be reached at
lord_ixzion@rpgmmag.com
or through AIM: Lord Ixzion
Lord Ixzion's Comedy Preference:
It's not especially hard to make me laugh, but I need to understand the
humor. Like OD, British humor is not exactly for me. Pop culture references
are good, too. I happen to like sarcasm and witty comebacks, as well.
Good luck!
OblivionDragon, RPGMM Head Reviewer:
OD has been a reviewer for the mag going on two years now, so you need not
worry about his ability to review fairly. If at any time during the contest
you have questions or comments, OD can be reached on AIM at OblivionDragon20
or by email at obliviondragon@rpgmmag.com
OblivionDragon's Comedy Preference:
All right, its not going to be hard to make me laugh as I pretty much
laugh at anything. But there is one thing I would advise against if you
want to get the best possible score, do not include British humor into
your game. I know there are VERY MANY people who enjoy it, and I respect
that, but I am not one of them. Monty Python...count me out. I'll try to
accept any game without bias though. Just thought I would give a
suggestion. :D
Prizes
And now for the moment we know all of you have been waiting for.
"What do I get for winning?"
Like I said earlier, its not about material prizes, but about the
pride you get from overcoming the obstacles…..but a good prize is pretty
sweet too, eh?
