While sifting through the pile of RPGMaker games submitted to the various RPGMaker sites, one always stood out. That game is Forever Darkness, a game that was given a high status with only a one word description: FUN. So, is it? Is Forever Darkness the very essence of this word?
Well, a person has to decide this for themselves, and it didn't take me long to decide for myself. In this game, you are a knight named Gavin who is sent by his king to a town called Bedford. In this town, something called a Dark Mana core has been broken. As Gavin arrives, his friend Lucas goes inside, into the 'darkness'. There, he gains a power and becomes, get this, the Dark Hamster Lord.
A few custom sprites saves this category from swarming in the pits of obscurity. Thankfully they are included.Despite the custom sprites, there is not much of a presentation. Bad design of towns and cities, although, luckily, they do get better. This still doesn't add up to much.
If there were any notable features, I didn't find any. Perhaps I snoozed off halfway through? any. Perhaps I snoozed off halfway through?
Nothing worthwhile makes this the worst category of the bunch. However, the creator has attempted to do his best with what appears as a lack of RPGMaker programming knowledge. What is there is satisfactory, but nothing that makes FD stand out.
At first this would have been the single worst aspect of the game. It took me about an hour to discover what to do next at a point very early in the game. Had I not found this out, I would have said there was a glitch that caused this game to be unbeatable. Luckily, this is not the case. It is indeed beatable, and no major bugs to hinder your advancement.Spelling errors are abundant in this game. Aside from that, there are no apparant major bugs. Aside from lack of a good story, that is.
It does the default RPG Maker capabilities proud. This game does offer some fun, but will bore those who are sick of RPG Maker's default battles. The battles are too easy, for one thing. Or maybe I just leveled up too much? Anyway, a non-existent story drops the fun down a bit too much. Hopefully the creator does better next time.
Forever Darkness is not that much fun. There is some, but don't let this misguiding word fool you. I rather found it a difficult task to gather up the willpower to finish it. However, Lucas Akers has managed to show that he has at least the talent to try harder. Lets hope he tries again. I wouldn't want that faint spark of hope go to waste.
