Went to the bars, drank, argued with girls philosophically, felt like I screwed up their world view. Should I watch what I say and either say nothing or not tell the truth? Hey, what about how I feel?

People are blurred. Most of them have no idea how different the world actually is. It's good to inform them.

People live in darkness. Their only light is what they see. And sometimes that is also blurred.

^ Wow, that surprised me.

Ahem... as for the topic...
It depends, really. If you have any specific reason for wanting the girl to think about you in some way, then watch what you say. If you don't care much about that, go ahead, say whatever you think you should. Don't treat them differently just because they're women.

When you argue with most women, the only one who loses is you. Let them wallow in their ignorance.

Will they care then if I turn it up a notch, or will they never probably care?

If you argued philosophically with a drunk guy in bar, at night, would you care? I probably wouldn't.

Hey Regal (and maybe the Gnasher), how similar are American girls to British (or Brazilian) girls with respect to philosophical argumentation?

Well, here, a girl will enjoy it if she enjoys it. Uh... yeah. That's pretty much it. It's a very personal thing. Some end up arguing even though they don't like it, and those always end the conversation with "whatever".
An intellectual girl who really enjoys sitting down and start talking philosophy, that I've never seen.

But in that situation, in the bar, drunk, at night, 99% of the girls approached by philosophy will look at you in a very strange way and you'll never see her again.

well, i do a philosophy course. some girls, and some guys, enjoy talking philosophy. the ones who enjoy the talking however are often the most dangerous. they can rush into things, inferring continually to the best explanation until their explanation is too contingent to be the best anything.

but yeah, i know girls who enjoy talking philosophy. some of them do it very well.

outside of my course? well, i have friends who will listen and discuss philosophy with me, and they are just as often girls as guys. it's usually only of passing interest to them, however; a topic of conversation and nothing more.

tbh that's fine by me. nothing worse than taking a thing too seriously, eh?

^.^

i have explained the structure of my Masters thesis to some people, and i have done so in bars. in fact, i almost always prefer to talk philosophy over a drink and in good company. that's how it's meant to be enjoyed, imo.

Yet 'in the bar, drunk, at night', yeah... it's probably not gonna work out. here, there, or anywhere. ^_^

there is a (debatably valuable) good side though; if 99% of the girls don't want to know, one in a hundred does. =D

@Regal

Do you notice a difference between American girls and British girls?

The thing is that I think that most people take argument as a means of expression too seriously. They only seem to value it when it is not contingent and when it is the 'appropriate' time and/or place.

Nobody seems to care that a conversation about sports is often a non-sequitar to a conversation about the weather nor that all sports predictions are unecessary inferrences when all one needs to is wait to see the game actually played.

Instead people simply express themselves.

But when it comes to argument, people either think it means "to fight" or is only necessary when the reasoning leads to "THE" answer, rather than a natural way of self expression.

If anything, what I am asking is do girls value mentally boxing with me the way that many guys I know do, and if not, should I not take a jab at them?

EDIT: Or better yet Regal, (and Ixzion, I'm looking your way), when a girl takes a mental job at me, can I throw back a mental knockout punch, like I might do with a guy. Keep in mind that when I say mental jabs, I mean sparring to box with high energy, not fighting to win, because remember we are all just at a bar "communicating". In other words I feel as though there is a double standard that a girl can throw a really negative criticism around when she needs to express it because the guy is expected to handle it, but that the guy is not supposed to say anything that is going to upset her because then he would just be a jerk.

EDIT EDIT: Let me rephrase that. I feel like much of the way a girl expressing herself naturally is acceptable in society and a guy expressing himself naturally is not. Part of the way the guy expresses himself naturally is through argumentation. I don't know if that is the case for girls and if not just I not be arguing with them because that would be unfair, even if it is unfair that I have to hold back from expressing myself?

Well firstly, i don't know any American girls. ^^; sorry...

and secondly, well, i don't think gender should change the way you act towards someone in what you're referring to as mental sparring.

context is important, though. arguing with someone who isn't interested or doesn't really want to do things the way you do is akin to invasion of personal space.

You can throw whatever 'mental punches' you like and feel ok about throwing, but it might not be well received.

Thank you for the generalised description of practical application of the term 'argument'.

I highly believe that most "common" males and females at impressionable ages are a lot of fun to mess with.

Doesn't matter if they have boobs or a penis, really- the mind is what is so... soft.

I sometimes mess with one girl I know just because I know how to manipulate what she will say since she's a very typical and tyrannical girl.:p

Regal,
Would most of the girls you know say they agree with what you've said in this topic and either way, do you believe what they say?

hm. maybe, probably?

Most of the girls i know think that celebrities are cool and cried at Titanic, however; so i'm unsure how much we really have in common.
