Students were evacuated from a Lynchburg College dorm just after midnight today after dispatchers received a call - which turned out to be false - that a man was being held against his will in Tate Hall by someone with a weapon, police said.

According to a news release from the Lynchburg Police Department, police responded to the 911 call around 12:30 a.m. The college immediately activated the campus early-alert system and evacuated Tate Hall residents to a nearby on-campus building.

Police have charged David Tyler Johnson, 18, of Hayes, with falsely summoning or giving false report to law enforcement, a misdemeanor. College records show he is not a student at LC.

Police say that while searching Tate Hall, they received information that Johnson had been given a ride to the Kroger on Wards Road, where he was found and taken into custody. He is currently being held without bond at the Lynchburg Adult Detention Center.

No substantiated on-campus threat was identified, the new release said. Police complimented the college's quick response to the incident and its cooperation with police.
