What I think is really funny in this particular case is dattebayo refuses to release any more anime subs until uploads stop. Think about for just a moment. Eventually dattebayo's episodes will stop uploading because they stopped releasing them. So when dattebayo thinks they are in the clear and starts releasing again, fans will start uploading them again as the content will actually be availible.

They've done nothing but delay the inevitable. Besides, if fansubbing is truely illegal as they say... then it's very hipocritical for a pirate telling other pirates not to pirate.

Anyway, dattebayo linked to three youtube accounts in an attempt to get you to send them messages to stop uploading dattebayo fansubs... so I did send them all messages. "Thanks for the uploads."

Even if dattebayo quits releaseing or gets shut down, there will be and are other sites to watch anime. To my understanding, fansubbing isn't illegal anyway due to it's unofficiality. It's not like it's a DVD or movie rip... Ah well.

Piracy aside, because I'm just going to say I enjoy fansubs- and sometimes it's the ONLY way right now to view certain anime series. *coughMarimitecough*

Riggggggggggght. That makes sense- a fansub group not wanting others to see their work? Yeah, there's the fact of someone will see them- but they face this risk heavily just by existing on the internet as it is. People would see it anyways, and I certainly don't want to download every god-forsaken Naruto Shippuden to watch it anymore. I haven't seen past Shippuden 5, excuse my ignorance to that particular series.

I think they run Bleach as well... another long-running series. People just don't want to have to download gigabytes upon gigabytes just to see the episodes once again.

I never disagree that when an anime gets licensed, that torrents are taken off the internet. I'm surprised Dattebayo is still in operation in a sense, because Naruto and Bleach are licensed; however, the contracts may not have touched the later episodes yet.

As for myself, I barely even watch long-running series on Youtube anymore. The extent of anime I see on Youtube is perhaps the first episode of a series I might want to try out.

I really prefer anime series with 50-60 episodes or less. Cause I can't even keep up with stuff like One Piece, Bleach, and Naruto- especially at school.

@Lantis - fansubs live in that legal grey area. if Dattebayo's practices were obviously straight-out illegal, they would be long gone. As it is, they may get wasted soon enough anyway, they continue to run largely on the rare thing that is corporate good grace.

Dattebayo provide their free, efficient service dependent on several conditions. one is that people don't do exactly what those narutards ARE doing. That's reason enough to quit providing their fansubs.

I don't think they're being douches at all, they're simply defending themselves.

Those retarded kids who are posting the subs on their youtube accounts are only gonna speed up the process of putting Dattebayo (which I suspect is still in operation largely due to the grace of those contractors who own dvd rights to Bleach and Naruto) down.

And when that happens, like you say Lantis, there are always other places for them to go.

I think I agree with what Dattebayo are doing and suspect that there is nothing else they can do at this stage. It's either a case of continuing to run until they get shut down, or putting themselves out of action in the hope that people will start to actually listen to them. They like doing what they're doing, and they don't want to be forced to stop because of n00bs.

Kratos, you are for gay people.

Oh oh... don't forget to shut his eyes after he's dead... you HAVE to do that, um... out of... er... respect? Respect for someone you just... murdered. Yeah... moving on.

Corporate good grace. Yeah, I can say that is a rarity. Though their methods are ultimately uneffective. Let's say I had a plate of cookies... one that you had access too. You were eating my cookies and I told you to stop. Whith disreguard to what I say, you continue to eat my plate of chocolate chip goodness. So I take it away and say I'll put it back after you stop eating them. But I say it in a way that's asking for you to not like me anymore.

Well, you are going to stop eating them simply because they aren't there anymore. And from my standpoint, it may look like you aren't eating them because I told you to stop, when ultimately you are just waiting for me to put the plate back down.

So all I managed to do out of all that was just yell at you in a manner that makes me look like a mean asshat.

Savvy?

heh. i savvy, but i find your analogy to be missing a couple of telling subtleties.

Can i have a go?

...

Lets say you’re making cookies. I like cookies.

Only you’re making them for school kids, and every day you take your cookies into school and the kids go ‘ooh yummy’ and eat the cookies. And you know? You feel great about yourself because you’re helping those kids. You really enjoy making cookies for kids.

But then one day, you realise that something is horribly wrong. One of the teachers whose students you’re giving the cookies to is lacing them with crack cocaine! OMG!

And the kids LOVE those damn cookies, eh?

But your supplying the cookies knowingly, even if the cookies are being laced without your involvement, is still illegal; you’re an accomplice, if only an unwilling one.

So what do you do?

You ask the teacher to stop, first off. He’s only lacing the cookies because he gets a cheap thrill out of watching the kids eat them, this teacher hates kids. But he won’t stop when you ask him to, in fact he starts putting MORE cocaine into the cookies. And if the police find out, you’ll go to jail.

What’s your best option?

Well obviously, it’s to stop providing cookies. Get the teacher sent to prison and the kids in rehab.

Of course here is where the disanalogy lives; the teacher is anonymous.

So what can Dattebayo do, what does our (I think fairly accurate) analogy tell us they should do? Stop providing subs. What do you suggest they do instead? I can't think of anything that will work, where 'work' means 'allow them to survive a little longer'

… You seem to be very offended, basically, because Dattebayo's staff have the nerve to be angry.

But you know what I think would really bite you, if you were the baker in the crack cookie case? It’s the fact that it’s your good will, and the enjoyment you took from baking the cookies, that’s being exploited.

Those n00bs are leeching from Dattebayo’s generosity and endangering the future of the service they enjoy providing.

Imo they’re justifiably angry.

Still disagree? ^_^

I agree with your scenario and the fact that they aren't unjustly angry. But that anger can truely come from one of two places:

The first place is a genuine worry for losing their site. That all the uploads to youtube and veoh will eventually alert a higher up corporation and shut them down. And it's from fear of losing the ability to be able to do something that they love.

The other, though is out of malace that people are going somewhere else to view their subs. Don't you think that there are other solutions to the problem? Like instead of threatening everyone with stopping their episodes releases... ask them, instead, to take all ties of dattebayo off of the video info. That eleminates the worry of being traced. As long as the raw file name doesn't have dattebayo in the name either as well as any watermarks, it should be fine.

I think it may be less innocent fear of losing their site, and more jealous greed that there's another means of watching their content. Now if this was hurting them in some way... maybe monetarily, I'd understand. But this really is of no consiquence to them (given all ties to dattebayo are gone from the video content).

hm, fair enough.

i personally think it's more likely fear of losing their site. i haven't read anything on the site before that's made me think that they care particularly where people get their subs from. I don't use them, but for some reason i wander past now and again. They're in an interesting place legally, imo.

Note that in removing their tags and ties, they'll probably be more likely to be shut down. Right now, they're showing accountability and responsibility. Take those away, and the companies won't trust Dattebayo, there won't be room for negotiation, and it's time for the fansubbers to join the pirates in walking the litigative plank.

Removing their tags is effectively suicide.

Like you, however, i can't exactly claim any of what i say about dattebayo's personal motivations to be true. I don't know what they think, I only have the impressions i've gotten from reading their previous complaints on the subject of fansub uploads.

I'm really just thinking that, since there's clearly another plausible explanation for the way they're acting, and it seems entirely reasonable, it might be a bit presumptious to be talking about them the way you have been. =P

*points at thread title* ^_____^ hehe

I'll agree to that... perhaps claiming douchebaggery on them may be over exagerating a bit. I'm not sure how much work actually goes into subbing anime. It may be very time consuming, draining, and frustrating at times. But I do think that there may be other alternatives to what they are doing now isntead of backlashing at youtube members.

And even still... there are plenty of other sites that sub anime. Cutting their release will just send most of their community to other sites like narutochaos who actually release their episodes on time. So when they threaten to stop releasing, they aren't helping anything.

I'm relitively sure that if you look, you'll find subs from all the anime subbing sites on youtube. I'm sure they are pretty much all accounted for. Every subbing community will have at least a member or two who will also be a member at youtube and think it would be a good idea to upload. Dattebayo is just the first site to actually start complaining about it.

I think Dattebayo are looking out for themselves and their site. They'll take a short-term loss of membership and a chance at long-term survival over the threat of being litigated against.

I also doubt that they want to go to jail because those kids are uploading to Youtube. Like the crack cookie baker, of course, Dattebayo are culpable if they don't try their best to stop what's happening.

I think you're wrong in saying they're not helping anything; they're helping themselves.

Possibly the operators of the other fansubbing sites value freedom of media too much to do the same. Possibly they're under less pressure atm. Or possibly they're just dumb.

reckon there might be any truth in that?

I reckon there is truth in most things.

And you are correct. I hoenstly can't say that they aren't helping anything... because they are, in fact, helping themselves. But that should speak for its self.

As for this pressure you say they may be under. It's not anything that the other sites aren't under. Unless some corporations has already contacted them with a warning or something (which I just no thought of and may be very true. Though I would think they would have mentioned that). Then there is the off chance that every other subbing site being complete morons and they are in fact, taking the correct course to ensure their prolonged activity.

But I kind of doubt though, truth be told. The worst that I think can happen is that they get a legal cease and desist letter... unless they do get one and continue to sub. I mean, they aren't making a profit off of it. Kind of like what happened to Chrono Trigger Ressurection.

Anyway... if they were really worried about the site, they should have known using harsh words would only provoke and even perhaps encourage the continuing of the issue. And as it stands... it looks like they have a better chance of shutting themselves down than a coporation with copyright papers do.

It has, aside from everything else, certainly raised awareness to their complaint. ^_^

a complaint i actually agree with entirely. Dattebayo are providing a service under certain stated conditions. They have every right to be angry if such conditions are casually and continually broken. It being their site and the subs being theirs, they also have the right to meet such selfish ingratitude in whatever way they deem appropriate.

Perhaps you didn't like their tone. But tbh, they have had a lot of patience, and they've been putting themselves at risk for a while now for n00bs who don't listen. I think they have the right to speak like that on their own site.

Maybe everyone will stop listening.

The whole business, imo, is a real shame. Narutards, eh?

And I can understand and agree with all of that as well.

But where I find fault is that they commited to put content on the internet and expect it not to be duplicated. In fact... there's very few times content is put on the internet and not ment to be strowed about freely (at least if it's a free service). So while I can comprehend why to sypmathize with them, I find it hard to. You can do anything you want on the internet... anything but be rid of all n00bs.

they don't get your sympathy because 'they should've seen this coming'?

lol.. fair enough ^_^ though i think they probably did see something like this coming, a long way off. who didn't?

I still sympathise with their attempt, however doomed it was. And i understand frustration at ungrateful n00bs. I'm sure you do too.

That's exactly why I read the manga and don't watch the anime!

^^

That, and the fact that the manga is better in so many aspects that it makes up for its lack of ninja-moving-badass-action!!!11!!ONE

IMO.
