Well, I'd like to give Rodak the benefit of the doubt... But hes no expert. :p

He was giving "advice" though. So there for... It was his opinion. :\

I hope this helps...

A very highly uneducated one, at that.

As far as I recall, the description text for this forum clearly states "for serious discussions".

In a way his posts could have been viewed as whimsical, or even satirical - they stated no actual stance that held any backing to it whatsoever, and referenced text that in no way can be considered HIS view or judgement.

Ever heard the term "blue brain" when in school? Pointing to a dictionary and saying "this is totally my opinion" is the same as merely blue braining, because absolutely no thought on your part has been put into it.

It's the same as what you just did to attempt to prove me wrong.

Oh, and just in case - here it quoted out nice and obviously for you:

The initial post stated a stance.

The forum is for discussion of topics, not just stating opinion and moving on.

If an opinion is uneducated, then a person should seek knowledge. That's why there's discussion going along with it - so other people can provide what they know in a way they think is correct.

I wasn't saying his opinion is worthless. If he had left it at that and not continued on to essentially try to revive the spam hammer, I'd have left his post alone and continued posting my opinions on the subject (and to be the complete opposite of modest: I'm quite knowledgable on the subject of anime) and the discussion of the original question would have continued.

His posts were a problem, no matter how I look at it. And so, I dealt with it.

Evidently everybody has a problem with that.

Well since I have a fresh set of eyes on this topic, My 2 cents will be added to the $155.38 that have accumulated over the 2 pages thus far. From what I have seen.

I don't think people have an issue with you handling the "problem" I think it's more about how you decided to take action on it. Deletion of posts based on your arguments IMHO is not a good way to handle things. Granted I am not a MOD, S-MOD or ADMIN, and I'm sure that I would be one of the last people that would be considered for such a position, however I do know how to manage people. Everyone deserves the right to be counseled and be given the ability to retract their statements.

Rodak could have modified his post if you gave him the chance to however they were just deleted from what I gather....

Rodak wrote:
This is easily settled with a dictionary.
Look it up. Being a cartoon is plot independent.

Your thoughts on this include the fact the dictionary is not a viable option for determining the difference between Anime and a cartoon. And you say that Rodak told someone to reference a dictionary.

Rodak wrote:
Look it up.

That could have been edited as opposed to deleted, I'm sure as a S-Mod you do have that ability. But you're tying this whole thought into a dictionary being a bad source of information because it's not FACT. You claim that we as english speaking people "Shape" what appears in the dictionary by our every day uses of words.

Our use of the word Natsukashii may make it appear in the dictionary, however it's meaning would still indicate it was a word of Japanese origin closely representing "Nostalgic". My point is, meanings of words in "The Dictionary " do not change. They get new uses of the word added to it. Just because we use the word differently today, it does not change the meaning of what it meant in 1997 or 1987 for that matter.

Stythe wrote:
A dictionary is not unquestionable; as if it were, it would have never seen the additions of words taken from other languages. It wouldn't have words like D'oh printed in it. All a dictionary is is a catalog of words that are used in our language.

Very well said! However the past definitions do not change. Take the word "CAT" for example.

Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary wrote:
Main Entry:
1cat Listen to the pronunciation of 1cat
Pronunciation:
\ˈkat\
Function:
noun
Usage:
often attributive
Etymology:
Middle English, from Old English catt, probably from Late Latin cattus, catta cat
Date:
before 12th century

1 a: a carnivorous mammal (Felis catus) long domesticated as a pet and for catching rats and mice b: any of a family (Felidae) of carnivorous usually solitary and nocturnal mammals (as the domestic cat, lion, tiger, leopard, jaguar, cougar, wildcat, lynx, and cheetah)2: a malicious woman3: a strong tackle used to hoist an anchor to the cathead of a ship4 a: catboat b: catamaran5: cat-o'-nine-tails6: catfish7 a: a player or devotee of jazz b: guy

Notice that it keeps reference of all the meanings, not just common speak as in "That man was one cool cat in there...."

In my honest opinion the above argument states that the Dictionary IS in fact a viable reference to be quoted as it wasn't written by one person, it was writted as you have said by us as a whole. But since it doesn't actually "DELETE" past history of what words actually mean and since the meaning of the word doesn't change even if OUR usage of it does, it remains in print year after year.

In closing making the above point, Rodak's opinion of referring people to the dictionary was correct albeit his statement to "Look it up." was not.

Stythe wrote:

And while we are at it we can continue the opinion thread on whether or not the dictionary is a viable reference source!

Well firstly, the only post I can see is the first one he made which even you admit isn't too bad. The others I never saw so as far as I'm concerned they might as well not exist (thus splitting them off and moving. not deleting). But all in all, it would have been way better dealt with by saying something along the lines of 'Dear Rodak, your posts are getting pretty spammy. Stop it or suffer some sort of fiery wrath in which many cows may be harmed.' or something to that effect.

I agree with Sumisem. Stythe, I would hope that you would recognize the importance of clarification. Maybe you really thought he was just trying to be spammy, but a more open and fairer perspective would be to say "why do you trust the dictionary so much", or bring in the points about the dictionary that you have since brought up. Would you not agree and if not why not?

When someone says that animals DID survive the flood because of Noah's ark by simply saying "look it up in the bible", I maintain that they ARE expressing an opinion. It might not be very original or critical, but it is an opinion that is consistent with what they value. I see the same for those people who value the tradition or 'sanctity' of the dictionary. We do not ALL see any book the same way.

Even if Rodak is not such a dictionary traditionalist, you need to confirm that first before stamping out his words.

From what I can gather reading these posts, it doesn't seem like you did.

I just don't like peoples posts being deleted for the fact..

It changes the thread. There was something stated in there. Weather it was good or bad. And now its a reference that is lost.

It's like going to a crime seen and getting rid of the evidence.

Being that I have quoted him. It makes it as if... I put words in Rodaks mouth.

He did say it. I made a quote.

But... Did he really say it? Or is Kitty making things up?

No. He is human like all of us, and a fellow Magonian. Let us remember that. There is no need to kick him. The point was taken and I believe we should leave it at that. We'll leave the rest to unfold as life usually does.

Unless you have an "opinion" as to why we should all engage in a kickfest.
