So a couple of days ago I got an offer for a job after interviewing for about a month. Once I fill out the paper work and send it in this Thursday I will officially be a computer consultant for a pretty large global firm (Solution Developer is the official title, and Avanade is the company for those interested). Man it'll be nice to have money, and insane benefits, and free travel if for business.

Needless to say I'm pretty damn happy about where my life is going, and in a few months will start getting me some next gen gaming systems finally (got to get rid of some debt first), and a new computer.

Also I'll be in Dallas for the week of July 9th, and in Seattle for 3 weeks a week after that. Hopefully I'll be traveling for my first assignment, since that would mean I wouldn't have to spend any money, since pretty much all necessities are paid for when on the road. But it's about 50/50 whether I get a job near me or not.

So yeah, whee. Also to anyone looking networking certainly is the way to go, as I used to blow it off as crap, but part of me getting this job was a referral from someone I worked on a couple of projects with in college, and a little help from another person in that project who was also my roommate for a year who works there. Not that I'm not qualified, just don't have any experience. Talking to people good :p.

Heh, that made me giggle.

Anyway, congrats. I'm pretty psyched for you. Kind of the way I felt when I got my network admin job. It's also the first job I've gotten that has benifits and junk too. I can imagine you are pretty pumped about it...

Well, good luck with your career. =P

Yeah this is my second job ever :), and the first one was just kind of typical summer job (Middle School Custodian, because my friend worked there, and it was decent pay). But yeah I plan on being there for 3-5 years then in my spare time get back to game development and start going to conferences and such. Then I'll probably transition to game development hopefully. Or maybe I'll like the job so much I'll stay there and just continue hobbyist game development.

But yeah having benefits, and the ability to travel (even if only in the Southeast) and earn miles while you do it is nice. Plus we're up for promotion every 6 months, and get free training and MS stuff since the company is partly backed by MS.

Congrats.

Apparently I can't get a job even if I try. I applied to stock at K-mart 3 days ago, no word back yet. Then again, how do these jobs expect you to get experience when you can't get jobs without experience and you can't get experience without jobs. Lame.

Yeah it is hard to find someone who is willing to give you a chance. Have you finished college yet? If so I would look for something better than KMart to be honest. They are usually more inclined to give some a chance oddly enough. Also if your college has a career fair I would work on making a good resume, highlight your skills and any college or personal projects you think are relevant, since you have no experience, and then attend. At my school they did a resume CD that they gave to every company that attended, so though I only went to one company I got calls and emails from like 5 and took one up for an interview. The company I got a job through however was not there, but like I said I got the interviews from a referral.

After that it's all about confidence and knowing how to answer the common interview questions. I spent some time on Monster and Career builder looking through their advice on interviews, following up and such.

But only other thing I can say is once you apply follow up with an email, or call the store to let them know you applied, give about a 30 second speech as to why you're qualified and what you bring, and remind them you're interested. Also don't appear desperate for a job.

So just try those, confidence really helps so make sure you really know yourself and what you're good qualities (especially related to the job you want) are. Even though it's just KMart doing this things will help you stand out from the tons of applicants they get. The reason why I mentioned the college thing is a lot of retail companies are not as likely to hire a college graduate since they know once they get on their feet and start pursuing what they really want they'll be gone, so at most they figure you'll be there maybe half a year before going to green pastures.

So I guess I'm saying if you're in college try aiming higher, you'll probably have a better chance than you think at internship jobs than retail. I know I was surprised at the attention I got just from putting my resume at a career fair, since when I got out of college, and a few other times I applied at Best Buy and such, and never heard back from any of them, yet I don't even talk to companies at a career fair a year out of college, and like 5 respond about a month or so later.

@fay - i always seem to have the same problem =P it seems a bit of a paradox. kind of annoying actually. ;_;

I got a job at Stream International.. they hire anyone basically. At least the one by me does. So now i have some good experience to go on. it's phone technical support though... not exactly anywhere near your field. :\ i'm not sure what kind of places would be for hiring young aspiring artists regardless of experience.

you could always start with sidewalk chalk? XD get discovered drawing awesome things on pavement. ever heard of Julian Beever?

Hey, it's like me and Target. Except I hadn't heard from them in 8 days, and they planned on MAILING me the fact that I didn't get hired.
