So since I've been off and on practicing bass for a while, figure I'd finally swallow my pride and dignity and record some of it and post it on the net. So it's got a couple of rough spots, but basically it's just me messing around, so don't expect anything like a song, it's more a random assortment of riffs. All of these are completely original, as I just came up with them like 10 minutes ago, while playing. Since I don't know a whole lot about music theory, I just kind of go for what sounds decent, no writing out the music before I play. As such I probably would not be able to completely duplicate any part of this, given I also don't play by ear very well :D.

So feel free to give any comment, though really I'm just posting this for fun, but if you have a serious comment, feel free to let it fly. Though I'm not sure I'll ever do this on more than a hobby level, constructive criticism never hurt anyone.

Here is the link to the file (I would appreciate it if you save it to your computer, but I have enough bandwidth you can just listen if you don't feel like going through the hassle). Also 56K warning as it's 5MB (4 minutes long at 192kb/s).

http://www.thetruecoolness.com/sound/TT ... 132007.mp3

So this is rough, as there was no real practice for it, just going off the cuff. As such don't expect the next great bassline out of it, but it should be decent.

If I can ever get around to playing songs without messing up a few times during them, I might start posting those as well. So that said, thoughts, comments, constructive criticism, all are welcome. Enjoi.

hmm...

it's not half bad, actually. i figure if you were given a tune you'd run with it pretty well. you certainly have a lot more imagination than i do when i played guitar. i was like... 'freestyle? what's that?'

>_< still do lack initiative, lets be honest.

but yeah. very little fret buzz (i don't know how much of a problem that is with basses, i assume the same as 6-strings)

i've listened to it on repeat. it's pretty good, i think. i don't have a particularly extensive knowledge, as i keep saying. but tbh...

the errors were ones that appeared to be caused either by pauses where you didn't know what to do, or pauses where you had to decide what to do very quickly and hit a bad note because of that. considering that all the way through you were having to make fast decisions, only hitting a few bad notes shows some knowledge, regardless of a lack of teaching in musical theory. Also, when actually playing learnt songs those errors would quickly be eradicated with practice.

I think you're competent, and you appear to have a lot of potential, though i would hesitate to gauge that without hearing you at your best, so to speak.

keep going, and please post more recordings on here if and when you make them ^_^

um.. constructive criticism? work on timing. some things were sort of... off. partially because of pauses and then sometimes it sort of.. changed beat or whatever.

good tunes ^__^ something you could sit and groove to kind of thing. though maybe that's just me i love bass like oh em And gee. really like the riff thats going on at about 2-3 minutes area.

but yeah. improv = impressive. i'm in the 'freestyle what now? *fear*' boat.

post more yes? ^____^ *nod nod*

A slightly more practiced and somewhat unified riff. A little improv at the end, based on a few things I had been messing with a few times before I did the recording. Really wish my sound card recorded things at a higher volume :(. Have to double the volume in a sound editing program for it to be audible. Guess I'll have to get a preamp or something I don't know. If anyone has any (hopefully free :)) suggestions on how to make it record louder that would be appreciated (my bass and recording level are at 100% but it's still pretty quiet).

So still a few rough spots, but certainly more polished than the last.

i liked the sound you had going on, it was quite Tool. i assume that was the kind of sound you were going for? or it might've actually been a Tool cover... hell, i don't know that much bass... :s if it's all original, take it as a compliment =P

you hit a nice rhythm, imo, about 2 minutes in. Improv, i assume... it was really pretty good. while you started off making a couple of little errors, those kinda eased out of the picture towards the end.

oh, YEAH. having listened again, you did some really nice stuff between 1.30 and 1.45... ^_^ departed from the typical playing single notes thing.

i liked it, i am in fact listening to it more or less on repeat, or at least have since i started writing this. post more, please? ^^

as soon as your blisters go down, anyway >_<

squee ^_^ I really like your second one, it's much more put together than the first one for sure. It sounds really improv.. like that you arn't following something scripted.. which is a good thing, right? but it sounds like you know what you're doing too.. or something ><
Hard to say really.. it sounds just.. more put together, like the way you started was more.. introductory than just jumping into sort of like the middle. I also really enjoyed the chords ^__^
AH! 'Structure' - thats the word i'm looking for. it has enough structure to sound put together but the right flow to sound improvisational. "jam" is a good word.
...less of a good feedback i guess...
oh yeah.. and one more part - at exactly 51 seconds.. where you changed the downbeat - very smooth. ;) much like.

squee!

As a bassist I enjoyed the second one greatly at points.
The first was amateur at times, as has been said, but overall you've got the upside of potential in your fingers.

Hell, I might go recording something now, assuming I can get to my bass.
Hmm, I could also record some drum improv.
*shrug*

Rambling aside, listen to John and do more.

Well still rough, I'll work on cleaning it up today and making something more of it. But figures since it's been a while I'd put something up.

NOTE: It's VERY rough, just forewarning.

Oh yeah I forgot about these I made as a background to a murder mystery game I made with some other people for our Video Game Design class. I was messing around with sound recorder. Both are similar but slightly different.

Well I've decided to take a little different approach to this. Since it seems I'm not very good at coming up with songs all the time, I think I'm just going to get my bass, hook it up to the computer, and hit record every other day or so. I'll still try to come up with some stuff that goes together, but for now I'm taking a more truly Jam approach.

So that said things are going to be a little rough and not as polished, but still feel free to leave comments. I generally know which parts are rough, but maybe there are some I missed.

Onto the latest

Haha, just listened to the first one. Not bad. A part a little after the middle reminds me of the Peter Gun Theme.

Well I sure hope so, otherwise I'm screwed :p. I'm sure lessons wouldn't hurt, I might try to get some once I get some money. Wouldn't hurt to actually know what the hell I'm doing, haha. Though I know the first thing the teacher would likely do is yell at me for my fretting technique, since I'm sure it's awful compared to the normal techniques, since I never use my pinky and just started using my ring finger more often :).

I know a couple of months after starting my job I'm going to get me some new strings, want to try out some half rounds. Also I'll probably end up getting a cheap fretless to try that out. And I'm going to get a Mic to see if that would sound better than directly connecting, and of course some effects and play with those. Having money's going to be awesome, though I'll likely be regulated to only playing on the weekend, especially if I'm traveling, which I want to do.

ah iunno.. mic usually sounds way worse than direct connect. it thought the quality is pretty good tbh. *shrug*

fretless bass is hard! but if you're really good it's like AWESOME because it technically never goes out of tune XD it's like a trombone.

speaking of Peter Gunn which is a really great show ^^ can you read music? i could totally send you what sheet music i have from that theme. it's bass cleff so you could probably work off it if you can read notes.

peter gunn theme is way awesome. *sigh* <3

heh... it started off sounding like Tool again.

awesomeness.

... it sounded a little shaky all of a sudden at 3 minutes 40 in. or thereabouts, but then you got control over what you were trying to do and i thought it was really strong from that point on. like... really, really good, bud.

all the way to 4:30, and even after that, i could see what you were aiming for.

i was pretty impressed, actually. ^_^

(i've never heard the peter gunn theme, UNLESS it was in the Blues Brothers. i think it might've been. <3 that film, it's neat.)

Yeah I can read music, or at least find out real fast (I'm a little fuzzy since I'm used to tablature) and convert it to tablature, which is much easier to read and play by. But sure send it to me.

Oh and this one was off the cuff again, though some of those I had been playing around with the day before.

As for the Mic thing I figured since it seems everyone does that it would be better. Of course with my setup I have to plug in the bass just right since it's a mono plug going into a stereo hole. But if you get the mono connection just right it plays like stereo.
