During our 5th anniversary chat, I announced that we would run a contest during the year. I also said that we would release more details in time.

The details have arrived.

RPGMM Official Contest Rules:

The contest is open to newly created games for the RPG Maker 1, RPG Maker 2, and RPG Maker 3 only.

This contest is not your run-of-the-mill "make the best game" competition. Oh, the goal will still be to make the best game you can, but we have decided to throw in some fun stipulations.

Have you ever played a game that has left you in awe and wanting more? What about a game that ended so abruptly that virtually no plot elements were fully fleshed out? Of course you have!

The goal of this contest will be to create a sequel to previously established RPG Maker Games. Competitors will first choose their desired RPG Maker Platform, and then choose from a list of 3 different RPG Maker games, each of a different genre.

You may only choose from the list of games we provide! (That is because we have to secure permission from the makers of these original games to put them into the contest.)

A zip file will be sent to you with the original game you chose, as well as a short plot outline to help you with your planning and development.

You may choose to make a prequel, sequel, or gaiden.

The contest will officially start on March 1st, 2007, at Midnight EST. At that time, the game choices will be made public. Until that time, feel free to post questions and comments in this thread.

Be advised: Creators of the original games MAY create a sequel to their games. But we may find it necessary to scrutinize a little more carefully. ;)

Prizes:

1st Prize: 1x Copy of the RPG Maker Megazine, $100 Visa Gift Card.
2nd Prize: 1x Paperback Mag Issue of your choice, $20 Visa Gift Card.
3rd Prize: 1x Paperback Mag Issue of your choice.

Sounds fun. I'll enter.

Looking forward to that magazine on my doorstep soon. Do we sign up for that on this topic?

Hmmm....this is an interesting twist on a contest. Create a sequal to a game that someone else has already released. Sounds kind of cool, actually! I wonder which RPG Maker 3 games are in the running. This is something to keep watching, for sure.

I think it's great that there's a second and a third prize too. Cool. Nice incentive!

just out of curiosity, the contest starts March 1, 2007. When does it go until?

Wow. That's a very interesting twist. I hope I've learned enough about rmxp by then to be able to sumbit a game.

And I second Pagerron's question.

I'm not sure there will be any RMXP choices. We haven't had much in the way of finished RMXP games here.

Just because a game is on one console doesn't mean it's sequel couldn't be on another version ^_^.

But in truth, it would be hard for me to play the games in the first place to know the story. Ah well. *slinks back to his corner*

Nah, I think the idea is to keep the sequels/prequels on the same RPGM that the original game was made on. Makes it easier to judge how well-made the sequel is, since each RPGM has a different amount of potential.

I'm in the middle of working on a game but anticipate being finished with it by the end of the month. I'd been hoping there was going to be a contest like this. I'm definitely considering entering it.

I don't think it is a bad idea to allow sequels on one RPGM of a game created on another RPGM, especially if they provide a synopsis. I don't think they said how long the contest will run, but it will be really difficult to both play the original and create the sequal in the time alloted, so a good synopsis is needed.

Well you have a whole year, unless you have something like college, work, or stuff like that I can see your point.

The ending date of the contest will be announced on March 1st. (I assure you, you will have time.)

Also, you may only create sequels to RPGM1 games on RPGM1, etc. This is for the sake of our judges, creators of the original games, and to keep the sequel in-line with its predecessor.

That's fair to decide to keep the sequels on the same RPGM version as the original. Since I'll have enough time to play the original, I'm in.
