I do enjoy occasionally playing an MMO. I've played Everquest, FFXI, a whole slew of smaller, lesser known MMOs, as well as a ton of MUDs. I just like playing video games with other people, especially when it's with friends or in a forum in which I can make friends. But I can never play an MMO for more than a couple months. When it comes down to it, I hate MMOs. They're usually slow and there isn't any interesting story to unfold. It just gets old. I don't want to spend eight years getting my character to level one-bazillion just so I can say I did it. Being the strongest isn't what I look for. I'm looking for something more. I need something deeper.

Do you have any suggestions?

Oh, and is there anything like and MMORPGMaker?

There cant be an MMOMaker. MMOs are one of the toughest types of games to make.

I've never played it, but maybe try Phantasy Star Universe. You've got the MMO on it, and you've got a 1-player RPG on it. When you need a break from the MMO, just play the 1-player game for a bit.

i play Guild Wars. It's free after buying the game, highly immersive, it LOOKS great and has a huge emphasis on team tactics and co-operative play, far more so than any other MMO i've seen.

On the other hand (partly to promote team play since the mobs just keep getting larger and the moster level cap is around 40, from what i've seen), it has a player level cap of 20.... which doesn't mean anything much, since you continue to grow and improve your character after that point. It becomes a case of improving your build and getting new skills rather than your stats.

The world is smaller than that of, say, WoW. But it'll take you a hell of a long time to see it all, even on just the one game. After about 100 hours of play, i've seen 60% of one of the three maps. For free, it's an absolutely stunning piece of work. One other advantage. People play it and enjoy it hugely, but i've never seen anyone get hooked on it.

^^

Tbh, if you're not so focussed on the levelling and you'd prefer a much more involved dynamic, GW might be a great choice. Each game and expansion (the expansions can be bought first as stand-alone games, btw)contains it's own full storyline and story-based missions. So there's a story to play through, a constant flurry of new and interesting teammates (since soloing become near impossible past L20), lots and lots of guild-based battles if you join a PvP guild... *thinks* and its just pretty cool...

^___^ <3 GW.

My first character's a monk.

^____^

hope that helped you.

So many things wrong with Street fighter online *cough* stolen sprites.

Killzone, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence online or MGO for short, WoW, Kawaks(an emulator for arcade games, mostly fighters.) and some games on psp

And you know this from experince?

I just hate their addicting-ness. You can't stop playing when it's fun.

You dont need experience to know how hard it is to make.
Duh.

He wasn't asking if they were hard to make, he was asking if you had experience.
Duh.

Well, I did play Oberin, Mac-only, terrible graphics, but freeware and addicting as hell. I mean, there was a time I spent my days on MSN Messenger while mining and blacksmithing in Oberin in the background.

But what I REALLY liked back when I played it was Diablo 2: LoD. It's not massive, the game is linear instead of abrangent, and there's a cap of 8 characters per game (that means, you'll spend the whole time doing the same things, but with different people). THAT was good, and everything free after you buy the game.

He asked if i had experience in it since my post says that MMOs are hard to make. Basiclly he was asking how i would know, that MMOs are hard to make.
So hes kinda asking 2 questions into one.
Duh.

Alternately, you read too much into 1ce's post. either interpretation is valid, but i certainly object to your use of 'Duh'. My post was essentially a parody of your psuedo-intellectual bad habit.

::Edit:: and 1ce has a point. You have no idea how hard an MMORPG is to make. In terms of actually designing it structurally, it probably isn't that hard at all. ^^ In many of the more practical respects i daresay it is. Then again, a thing always seems harder to do when you know next to nothing about it.

So perhaps he was pointing out the inherent flaws and shallowness of your... blanket statement. If he wasn't then, i am now.

Duh? :p

Sometimes experience isn't needed to gain knowledge. MMOs are tough to make. How would i know? Please spend an hour of your time sitting down and do some critical thinking. The results will be the same. :D
I'm way too lazy to just type out a whole paragraph of why its hard. Meh oh well i guess, i'm just lazy. :P

Klaus, maybe you hate MMOs cause people might have called you noob a little too much? :XD

I'd think the hardest part isn't the programming itself, but the maintenance of a server (or more than one) that can support hundreds of players at the same time.

Man, it just can't be pleasant.

*sigh* apart from the fact that you've now changed your statement from 'one of the toughest types of games to make' to 'tough to make', which drastically alters what you're saying...

... and the fact i already made and balanced an RPG capable of supporting PvP and PvE play, which wasn't so hard...

... and the fact that reading a book tells you nothing about how hard one is to write...

... and the fact you have drastically failed to answer the question, which is to demonstrate how you can say that with any justification?...

I totally shouldn't be wasting my revision time on this.

http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/justep-foundational/

^ is what i should be doing.

At any rate, i daresay you might be right, even if you have no justification whatsoever. ^.^

I Like Guild Wars.

Yup. It must be grueling work. Also, it requires money.....a...lot....of...money.

heh, the stanford online encyclopedia... probably the most accessible fully (well, kinda... they're still referencing stuff after YEARS, that particular article got an update 4 days ago w00t) referenced enclycopedia of philosophy around. That particular reference summarises about a quarter of one of my modules, so it's pretty damn useful.

^^
