I was watching something from Homestarrunner.com and Strong Bad was making fun of this exact poll. I just want to see how far this goes...

I think you are right... but I hear the .gif (with the "j" sound) all the time. My room mate is one, to be specific. I guess it just comes out without really thinking about it...

Well I say gif, because it's how it's spelled. I hate words that don't sound the same as their spelled, since it makes spelling them harder and further confuses our already confusing language. Not to mention the fact it's Graphic Interchange Format, not Joint Photographic Experts Group. So there is no J even in the actual name for it, so why would one put one in the pronunciation of the acronym.

I had a college teacher once say "jig" instead of "gig"

In portuguese (and perhaps other languages derived from latin), a G in front of an E or I is pronounced 'j'.

Therefore, in portuguese the correct thing would be 'jif'. But I like 'gif' much much better.
