I bought it last year 2 days before x mas, Its a really good game. I'm still a fan of the lush vibrant environments and the enriched story it has to offer. The secret ending plus a new dungeon and an arena is good idea.

I plan on getting it, but I don't know if it's worth it.

Note: PS2 games in my country? After exchange rates, around 80 dollars. No less.

I played it, beat it, and put it away. I've liked the Dragon Warrior series (now titled Dragon Quest due to the cross-over between Squaresoft and Enix). But there are some factors that I think they could have done better on. Battle is pretty much just like RPG Maker 1. I'm not a fan of grouping enemies, but it was okay. The storyline was a little bland, no major plot twists or suprizing exposures. And there were no real puzzles to solve.

I honestly liked the older games alot better. Though I did like the cell-shading graphics as well as everyone's brittish accents. It was a more difficult RPG out of the lot. The final boss was a pain... though the praying thing was interesting. The ending (no worries, no spoilers) wasn't anything great. Didn't give me a since of accomplishment. Though beating the boss alone should give me more than enough of that.

The biggest problem I had with the game was that it was just one convient errund after another. EX: You want a boat to follow Doulmagus.
Instead of being able to just go to the boat-in-question and getting homedude with a harp to get it back into the water, homedude breaks his harp. So you have to fix that, and to do that, you have to do this.... the list goes on. It takes several game hours of petty errund running with no real story development before you can even continue with your quest.

Minus that one detail, the game was fine.

Lantis, I haven't played very many Dragon Warrior/Quest games, but those problems you had are pretty much there in every other DQ game.

Or at least that's what I want to say, but the only DQ game I've beaten so far is the first one.

Only DQ I played was the 3rd one for the Game Boy Color :D

I guess I won't bother trying DQ8. Sounds lame. Sounds like... RPGM1 games. Which I can make on my own :D

You aren't wrong... but I would have thought they might have grown out of the petty fool's errunds by now... (I thought DQ8 was the worst of them all about that)

P.S. Does anyone find it funny that there are no dragons in Dragon Quest?

Well in the monsters there are. Also Akira toriyama loves "Dragon Ball/Z" so thats why the characters look as they do

The old quest style is what the Japanese love about the series, though.

And are there seriously zero dragons in the games now?

Man, Akira Toriyama doesn't "love" Dragonball/Z.

He's the freakin' AUTHOR!!

And that's his particular drawing style. Every manga he drew has the same style, which was rounder in the beginning and with the years it became more angular.
(Just compare Dragon Ball/Dr. Slump to Dragon Ball Z...)

Within the storyline.... not a single one...

Just a handful of random enemies that look more like dinasaurs than dragons.

Pwn count +1 for you.

Oh, and how many of you think that the protagonist from DQ8 is almost just like Serge from Chrono Cross?

He does look like many Toriyama characters. It's mainly the eyes, I think... most male Toriyama lead characters have those eyes.

And the spiky hair!

Oh he loves DBZ you can tell by every drawn cover art. I will post pics of the dbz dopplegangars. Including the Super saiyan I mean Super Tension character in DQ8. His style keeps the fans of dbz to buy the game regardless of the story.

I wouldn't pay more than 30 bucks for it if I've never played it. And that's being generous.
