What's your favorite RPG of all time? Of course, there's one exception. You cannot mention any RPGs from the Final Fantasy series. You can select any RPG ever made, from any company, but not a Final Fantasy.

List which one, and why. Myself? I would probably like Ganstream Saga. It's an oldie, and it's not very well known. I like it because of the battle system, the graphics (anime portraits, and anime cutscenes), and the story was great (with an ending with a sad twist :cry ).

So what's your non-FF favorite RPG of all time? And for what reason?

I'm going to say Lufia II or Earthbound. I can't pick one. I tried.

I love Lufia II well... because... it rocks. Had capsule monsters, decent graphics for the SNES, and a cool plot.

I like Earthbound still, to this day. I still own my SNES cart of it. I love it. My favorite part is Fourside, and the Summers part.:)

That would easily be Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Partially because of how much it trumped Paper Mario 1 (which was previously my favorite Mario RPG, and is now my least-favorite). The music wowed me right from the start with the game's pre-title opening. I especially liked how each important boss had their own battle theme. I guess my favorite boss theme would be Chapter 3's final boss (who shall remain nameless because the villain of this chapter was a mystery), although that was a somewhat easy boss. The graphics were also quite good, and Intelligent Systems took the "paper" aspect even furthur for some nifty effects (such as the screen crumbling like paper when going through a pipe). The battle system seemed to be upgraded since PM1, with a larger variety of button/stick timings for increasing power. The story was also a major improvement. Although it was typical like PM1 with the first chapter, things finally picked up near the end of the second chapter, and aside from a few annoying quests that required going back and forth through a monster-infested area, and the Toadstool mini-quests (which were easily cop-outs of the PM1 quests), it was good fun all around. It also was plenty funny, and got some laugh-out-louds out of me (even topping the organ from SMRPG). The ending was good, although the music during the credits was odd. I also have never been so interested in the characters of a Mario RPG since the original (BTW, the Yoshi kid rocks; though he does have a few sucky color options). And it probably had the most difficult final battles in Mario RPGs so far, perhaps tying with Cackletta if not exceeding.

Hm. Anyone remember Granstream Saga? (ignore the error of my first post, it's called Granstream Saga... and I'm too lazy to edit it)

I'd have to say the first Phantasy Star -for the Sega Master System, or was it the Sega Genesis? I can't rememeber. (I owned each of those at one time.) Just because it was the first RPG I ever played.
I thought Legend of Dragoon for PS1 was great too.

Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals I like more, but my nod goes to Earthbound purely on the fact that I replay Eartbound way more than Lufia II.

Chrono Trigger all the way. No if's and's or but's. Great story, fun gameplay, addicting battle system (which they should use again), great soundtrack, multiple endings, game + mode.... what more do you want!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I can't take it!

*goes and plays Chrono Trigger*

Secret of Mana.

Although I believe Legend of Mana was also on the greatness scale, it lacked a bit in multiplayer.

I disagree... Lengend had nothing on Secret. In fact, most active time RPG's don't have what Secret of Mana had. It's one of my favorites just under Zelda actually. Just under the Mana titles would be Megaman Legends... which sounded pretty gay at first but turned out pretty stinking good.

On a side note. I got my girlfriend to name her new puppy Neko... after that cat that sells you crap in Secret of Mana.

lol
I know this kid that named his dog "Neko", not realizing that the word Neko is Japanese for Cat. Isn't it odd in RPGs where they name a Cat Neko? I mean, it's redundant.

^Kind of like that little scene from that old super mario brothers movie. Mairo brother's = last name Mario. which means Mario Mario and Luigi Mario. Yeah, a little redundant.

Oh, and my GF thought I was saying Meko. So now we argue over either Neko and Meko... which sounds pretty much the same... But doesn't matter that much.
