"Earlier this month, gamer named Mitchell S. with the online screenname "Kuja105" who posts on a few online videogame forums (including GameFaqs.com and MetalGearSolid.org) committed suicide. On January 2 he posted a message in both forums detailing his intent to end his own life, citing overwhelming complications with school and finances.

A very brief period of initial disbelief was followed by a barrage of replies from fellow forum members pleading that he not take his life, trying to talk him out of it.

For days, no word was heard from Mitchell. Fearing the worst, members and administration from metalgearsolid.org began searching for contact information, spending hours on the phone trying to get in touch with him. Finally on January 4, Ryan K., an administrator at metalgearsolid.org, got him on the phone and spent hours desperately trying to talk him out of it.

Sadly, Mitchell soon ended his own life by consuming antifreeze and painkillers.

Later, members from the site contacted Mitchell's family to find out the grave news. They reported it to their online community, and posted a tribute to their passed friend on the front page of metalgearsolid.org." Full Report Here.
Mr. Jack Thompson then sent in the following letter regarding the situation to MetalGearSolid.org, one of the forums frequented by Mitchell, where he was known well:

"Your "gamer friend" will find peace through the Lord, Jesus Christ, but sadly it's too late for that.

There is a void in every heart. You can fill it up with the things of God, or the things not of God. This unfortunate soul chose to fill it up with combat games. The playing of these video games is masturbatory activity, meaning senseless self-stimulation. If you gamers could use a dictionary you would know that that term is not necessarily a sexual one.

The real tragedy here extends beyond the life and death of this one fellow. There are literally millions of young people and young adults whose despair is deepend by turning to the things of this world and then finding them meaningless.

All of you gamers need to put down the controllers and get a life. The utter inanity of the vast majority of postings here shows how vapid "gaming" really is.

You are one of the cheerleaders for this wasting of time and the wasting of lives. Do you feel any remorse for having contributed to this "culture of death?" Of course not. Hey, let's all play MORE games, and ignore all the really productive things to do with our lives.

Let's pretend to be shocked that a gamer might descend into deeper depression, as his gamer "buds," knowing he was killing himself, couldn't figure out how to call 911 themselves for him. That would have involved leaving their computers I guess.

Sad. Sad for all of you."

Its sad that the kid committed suicide but its even sadder when jack thompson exploits this kids death to prove his argument.

Personally, I found it very saddening that person felt the need to end his life. Depression can lead someone to that.

But what's worse was Jack Thompson's response. Profiteering off of someone's death? I was disgusted by it.

i agree with that, Jack Thompson acted completely out of order there. The question in my mind is... well...

in what he's saying...does he have a point?

You can't listen to people who preach about god then they do something else. Its called hypocrites, since GTA: San andreas was exploited because of the Hot coffee mini game Jack Thompson wants to do something. It would be ironic that he watches porn and other movies intended for adults. He might even give some to his children. But people now a day's don't give a damn about someone dying. Like if I did right at this moment probably a small part of my family & friends would care but when it comes down to it no one really cares. Still that doesn't change the fact that Jack Thompson used this kid's death to gain some political support from people. ItÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s what I like to call "pull a jack move" but he did as some people expected. The family of the kid is mourning, yes mourning. I bet Jack Thompson didn't ask for their opinion about their son's death or another important matter video games. Have video games ruined his life or real life issues not related to video games. ThatÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s a true question he should ask.

hmm..

i hope jack thonmpson never visits this forum, cause no doubt he'd try to sue us for saying he gives porn to kids.

i dont know, though. im trying to seperate what he said from who he is. cause he's a tit, and people are focussing on that, and obscuring the fact that maybe the kids death did have something to do with the life he led.

im not saying here that each time you pick up a controller, you move a little closer to death. but games can damage lives. i know a lot of intelligent, responsible people who were completely headfucked by the release of WoW. i know a couple of you know people like that, who quit their jobs and are still sat on the game day after day.

so games can influence your life. the failure of the internet community in question to protect the guy is something else. i figure they did a fair bit to try and help him, and Jack Thompson is an absolute BASTARD for rubbing his death in their faces in that way.

but... ah hell, its hard to say here.

do you think that video games are a problem?

i'd say no. unless (and this is a big but) they are abused or overplayed. then, like anything, they bacome a problem and a potential danger.

i dont really know any people who would go that far, though....

whats your opinion on that one? is time spent on video games a danger? if abused?

Really, he had financial problems, school problems, and others not related to gaming. But lack of money could have meant a lack of games, but unlike Jack Thompson, I'm going to say that wasn't it. Some people, yeah, they die playing WoW, etc... but he committed suicide, and for higher reasons than a video game.

I give Jack Thompson one point. People do get addicted to video games. People get addicted to TV, too. And drugs. But I'd much rather be addicted to video games than something dangerous.

Very true people get addicted to a lot of things, video games, anime, TV, drugs, cars, sex, women, men, money, etc. Yes there are some games out there that people use as their own lives because they hate or don't understand life. WoW can kill you, Everquest, Gaia; actually any one of those can kill you unless you have self control and discipline. Without those two you'll get hooked.

Taizon, I couldn't agree more. I know too many people who get sucked into that crap. People who quit their jobs, broke off perfectly good relationsihps. But hey, that's the kind of world we live in. I'm just glad that there are people that still have their heads screwed on right. And the fact that you guys here know that rocks.

I agree that it is possible for people to be very influenced by games, there is no doubt in my mind about that. But, it is not influential to everyone. Every form of entertainment is influential. Hence: Role model... Be it a person, character, Jesus, a personality, or anything imitatable. It is just easier to pick on games because technology has run rampant these last 8-10 years that these new and awesome games/ game systems are the big "It". Personally, I do believe some games make people worse. But I also believe that people are influenced by Dave Chapelle (I'm Rick James Bi...) Sports stars: (People yelling Kobe when they shoot) and here is the best: Parents... Every guy wanted to be like they're dad and all girls wanted to like their mom ( before teens

But that doesn't mean that is why a SELECT FEW of us are stupid.

It is all based on a person's lifestyle, self-esteem, and will power.

Luckily, my partner plays Runescape with me, at least. Otherwise... I'd get the smackdown.

But yeah, I've heard it all. Most recently, a person rapidly advancing on high scores has been rumored to have quit school. With the sheer amount of exp with possible exp per set amount of time, seems it's probably true. I can understand quitting college for your own reasons, but for Runescape? No, no I can't. The game isn't THAT good.

I know when to not play around. I could have jacked around tonight and not have done my 2D design project til late. But I started when I got home from figure drawing... lo and behold, it's 10 PM and finally I get some free time after working on that project for 5 hours. :lol

Any game isn't good enough to quit college. Well not everyone is the same. Some can get the work done and do well. Others may have problems understanding it, can't concentrate or just lazy.
