Well, that just takes everything I liked about achievements and takes a huge sh*t on them. It was already lame enough getting an achievement in a game for just playing through it normally, something you would do anyways. I really cared about my gamerscore because it was an accumulation of my gaming prowess. This? This is... so lame.

Looking around, it seems we're not the only ones PO'd about the Xbox None conference. I am so glad it's not just us. Means Microsoft is actually feeling the heat.

Considering they had to bring in MS employees to provide the applause during said conference, that is hardly surprising.

My assault on our obscene repository of Xbox One transcripts continues. Here's another nugget from Microsoft Studios corporate vice-president Phil Spencer, on developer interest in the console and why all you "super core guys" who supposedly despise live TV will probably buy one anyway.

"I think, coming out of this generation, being the market leader globally and really differentiating with online and that community, our third parties have been pretty eager to partner with us and I think you'll see between the 21st and what we do at E3, I think you'll see some really special and unique things," Spencer commented during a chat with journalists, a week or so before the Xbox One reveal event. "We believe that if all you want is gaming, you'll still pick us, at the end of the day.

"The super core guys, they will buy everything,"
he added. "They will buy all devices, but most people really only do buy one device, and if you're going to think about what that one device is, we believe an all-in-one system that does the best games and TV and entertainment will be something that's really unique.

"And then some of the things that we're doing with the architecture about how fast those experiences are, how you can do more than one thing at a time - that's going to be something that I think will heavily differentiate us, and the other thing you've got to think about is, this is our starting point.

"We are a very ambitious, creative group that always wants to improve, and so if you think about where we launched the Xbox 360 in 2005 and where it is today, it's night and day from where we started. And we're thinking about that the same as we thinking abut this next platform.

"We're going to continue to innovate, continue to add new experiences, and make it better every single year. Right now we're eight years into this platform - we didn't have a single music video [at launch], we didn't have any entertainment, and now we're seeing half our usage globally driven from entertainment apps. And so we think the story will evolve and continue to get better over time."

The bolded, underlined is some real sh*t. "We didn't have any entertainment". WHAT DO YOU THINK A GAMING CONSOLE IS?

.. is exactly why console gaming exists, in my opinion.

I sat for a while and thought about this at one point, and came to the conclusion that console gaming is a thing because technology advances too fast. Computer gaming advances at a speed that requires hardware upgrades at a fairly frequent pace in order to maintain a satisfying experience, while console gaming provides a bit of a bottleneck that allows people to continue playing new games without constantly upgrading their hardware. .. at least, until the game producers have advanced their products enough to fully utilize the hardware in their current console, which then requires hardware upgrades.. which in the console world is an entirely new console.

As for why different brands of consoles exist.. corporate greed. If you take it from a slightly different angle, for example movies, Disney does not require that their movies be played on a Disney bluray player, and neither does any other movie company. The console gaming world is just full of companies wanting bigger chunks of the pie.

That being said, computer gaming has the same sort of issues in a different way: microsoft doesn't seem to like you using stuff made for a previous OS on a current gen OS etcetc.

tldr Console gaming is good as a concept, considering the first paragraph of this post, but it's executed exceptionally poorly. I hope it dies one day, or streamlines and stops being so laughably pathetic.

I think Nintendo has taken the best approach for the next generation in console gaming. I've been saying since the reveal of the XBox One that this is all about money and greed than the consumer and the games (and their quality). They want to try and wrangle a large market with the people they partner with and try and cutoff anybody that takes away profits, which is why they are trying their best to run used games through them to make some more cash.

In the grand scheme of things, Microsoft and Sony, should they follow the same model (and they will), they will make large short term profits, but the long term will hurt them more. The problem with business and technology now is that they focus more on short term goals rather than long term. When you get interviewed for a job they ask you, "Where do you see yourself in five years?" It's short term in a career perspective, but long term is 10+ years. Sustainability and steady progression and innovation is the key to making profits and gains. Short sightedness wins you gold early, but if you don't plan ahead for long term stability, you can't maintain success. That's how I see Microsoft and Sony right now. They're wanting to cash in big, but they are looking at profits NOW and with little regard for what the consequences may be down the road. Nintendo is not attacking aggressively and is taking it's time prepare it's products, and I believe they will come out I top down the road.

However, with society a "now, now, now" type of foundation, who knows. I don't see Microsoft doing well with the current decisions they're making. I hope they bite the dust.
