The games were announced by Satoru Iwata via a special Pokémon themed Nintendo Direct. You can watch the complete event, about eleven minutes in length, including game details and footage on Youtube here. Includes a little retrospective on the series, too.

Not a whole lot is known about Pokémon X and Y, but here's what we've got:

• Three new starters: Fennekin (Fire), Froakie (Water), and Chespin (Grass).
• Two new legendaries: A sword feet rainbow antler stag...thing. And a big red monster bird...thing.
• First Pokémon to be rendered mostly fully in polygonal 3D. This includes the player character and environments, explorable in 3D.
• Battles are now in 3D, so no more sprites. 3D animations of course.
• For the first time ever, Pokémon X and Y are scheduled for a global launch this October. At the very least including Japan, the US, the UK, and Australia.
• New region suspected to be based on France.

This will come to pass when Pokemon Z comes out.

Hmm... It's been a while since I paid attention to anything Pokemon related. But I'm curious to see if they do something different enough to catch my attention again.

Finally we get 3D battles ala Pokemon Stadium. I think that is the main reason I haven't been able to finish a Pokemon game since Gold and Silver, they get so boring way too quickly.

Here's hoping that the story is better than the traditional Pokemon story as well, though I doubt it is.

I havent played since Yellow, so I've been out of the Pokemon loop for a very long time. With that said, I'm glad Nintendo is going for a fully 3D Pokemon game. Hmm, I'm hoping for a stronger narrative in these games. I'm interested, for sure.

If the battles are like Pokemon Stadium's I expect boredom to creep in early. It's way too slow in stadium.

Maybe, but if the battle animations are anything like they were in Black & White, there should be enough visual flare to keep things somewhat interesting.

As for the narrative, I suspect it'll be the exact same quest as the past five generations.

I propose the game is set in a post-pokalyptic land where all the old pokemon are gone and the young pokemon trainers must discover the only 150 new pokemon to that magically appeared or something.

No. I'm tired of post-apocalyptic crap. It's being over done.

I can't believe that was the big reveal. It's just the next generation... but IN THREEEEEEE DEEEEEEEE!

I actually meant to just get rid of all old pokemon. I chose pokalypse over pokecide, but what I think would be nice if there were only 150 pokes to catch again.

I don't care. My inner 11-year-old is PLEASED. 3D FINALLY. YESSSS. This is actually a huge deal for them, mainly because I expected another 2D with 3D isometric style like the pixel stuff in Black and White, as well as their sequels.

Plus, we don't know about the new features at all yet, and there's usually a couple of those.

More importantly- Nintendo seems to be pushing to make worldwide releases instead of Japan-only releases. More companies should do that.

They still need to give me Pokemon Snap 2 on my 3DS.
