I guess I shouldn't even put this in the gaming forum as this apparently has nothing to do with games or gamers. And btw, this isn't the only commercial Nintendo put out. There are several with the tagline, "I am not a gamer."

It's a poor attempt to "humanize" gamers. Make it appeal to the casual mobs. They think the term Gamer has a negative appeal so they are making fools of themselves.

Or they are trying reverse psychology on the hipster gamers...

Either way, poor marketing on Nintendo's part, once again.

Well, I always saw them more as "You don't need to be a typical gamer to enjoy this game"
I still find those commercials stupid tho.

Nintendo is one huge tsundere ever since core gamers let her down during the Gamecube era. Now she's all WELL FINE I DON'T CARE I REALLY DON'T, changed to someone else, but she still wants us back of course, for some sweetness. Nintendo is basically playing coy. Oh those awkward and intimate Iwata and Reggie videos, dohohoho.

That being said, this kind of advertising is what works for them, so I can see them sticking to it. There's still a bit of a pressure on my gender at least, that video games are not acceptable as a hobby, and oh she's weird if she plays games to a good portion of women. Who have had that same mentality impressed in by society at large, and dudes who got legit cry cry that girls were playing games too. So now we're at this impasse where in order to court a certain demographic, we can't make things seem too hardcore. It's considered unattractive and "you-should-see-someone-and-fix-that". It sucks! It really does. But at the same time, I do see a shift into games becoming more and more acceptable to everyone. This means from the casuals to the cores to the hardcores(I really don't consider myself a hardcore gamer, seeing from people from /v/ haha).

I even prefer stuff like Nintendo's Rhythm Heaven commercials(I bet no one remembers those), to all these HELLO MUDVILLE! Farcry 3 commercials. And every single Gamestop game that gets a commercial is grimdark. They're courting the largest audience quite often, the 18-25-year-old-guy. And I get why. That's cold numbers. That's the largest demographic on 360 and PS3. But Nintendo is definitely more varied, so they attack this a different way. I'm not saying they are noble, but I definitely do not need to see more crap grimdark commercials to be happy as a gamer. I prefer some whimsy with my FPS, which is why I guess Borderlands 2 was probably my GOTY from how little time I even spent with it so far! It's the best of both worlds. No grimdark commercials from them, either- humour! Yes!

This all being said, I think this campaign shall too pass(How was it again, why was "Play it Loud" pertinent to actual games at all again?)... And I do hope that when Animal Crossing New Leaf is covered more, we get some cute celeb commercials of them playing it(which is actually very very very Japanese with how they promote with idols). They usually go back and forth between gameplay and that. I already have a thought on who would be awesome with it. Because I'm terrible like that.

That being said, don't let shoddy marketing discourage you from a console. Microsoft and Sony's recent E3s and whatnot have been absolutely abysmal, but that doesn't stop it from having good games despite bad promotions. WiiU thus far has a smaller sampling(but the MOST games I have wanted legit at a launch, like ever) but PS3 took years to get a wide game library, Vita took forever too. 3DS? I don't have to tell you that was a crap game launch time for them. Launch does not a good console show-of-hand make. However, NSMB Wii U is legit fun, and Scribblenauts is something I actually really enjoy(it hearkens me back to the Magic Pengel days), and there's more coming out for certain, like Pikmin 3 among other games. My rule of thumb is usually two games I want at the very least before I buy, and I followed the same rule with my 360... which I bought like 2-3 years after launch. So I can totally get waiting on that front. Money is also a huge issue, and buy what you like with your budget. But I'm just calling it now that WiiU is going to have a much, much better 3rd party library at the very least(recall how the Wii was getting much more cool stuff besides "Cold Stone Creamery Scoop It Up" later in its lifespan), and that some people are now subscribed to the whole Nintendo first party just sucking no matter what now. I am definitely not above saying NSMB Wii U is fun, and worth retail- and I will definitely enjoy if they would FREAKING BRING BACK MARIO GOLF and Mario Kart is my favorite Mario-party game of choice. Fortune Street is also a ton of fun on Wii, but I don't see that getting a sequel quite yet, while Mario Kart Wii is much older.

I guess that's everything. I dunno, but that's kinda my whole feel on Ninty negativity. Two copper, two pence, too done.:P
