Okay, here's something. You can only choose one console per generation to play for the rest of your life. You will never be able to play the games for the systems you didn't choose in any way ever again. Backwards compatibility does NOT EXIST.

Make your choices wisely. And use spoiler tags for your stuff so you won't be influenced. Give some details about why you chose the system, unless you're a lazy asshat.

Generations
Third Generation:
Famicom | Sega SG-1000 Mark III | Atari 7800 | Nintendo Entertainment System | Sega Master System

Fourth Generation:
PC-Engine | Sega Mega Drive | TurboGrafx 16 | Sega Genesis | PC-Engine SuperGrafx | Neo Geo AES | Super Famicom | Super Nintendo Entertainment System | Philips CD-i | Atari Jaguar

Fifth Generation:
3DO | NEC PC-FX | Sega Saturn | Sony PlayStation | Nintendo 64 | Apple Bandai Pippin

Sixth Generation:
Sega Dreamcast | Sony PlayStation 2 | Microsoft Xbox | Nintendo GameCube

Seventh Generation:
Microsoft Xbox 360 | Sony PlayStation 3 | Wii | Evo: Phase One

My picks
3rd Gen: NES

This one was easy. I'd definitely pick the NES out of all of these choices. While it was tempting to pick the Famicom for the potential of the extended library featuring JPN-only games, I can't read Japanese that well yet. Plus I want my games to have all the broken English and things of my childhood. With its library of games, NES just can't be beat.

4th Gen: SNES

This was so difficult for me. I'm a gigantic classic Sonic fan and the Genesis was where it was at. Games like World of Illusion, Shining Force series, Rocket Knight Adventures, Contra Hard Corps and more make me want to choose the Genesis so badly, but unfortunately for me, the SNES is probably the best console ever made hands-down. Super Mario World 1 and 2, Super Metroid, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Lufia II, Donkey Kong Country 1-3, Tetris Attack...there's just too many games I can't live without on the SNES.

5th Gen: Playstation

This was kind of tough. I was a big N64 kid back in the day, with Mario 64, Bomberman Hero, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Paper Mario, Mario Kart and more giving me hours of entertainment. On the other hand, the PS1 had Final Fantasy 7-9, Metal Gear Solid, Star Ocean: The Second Story, Final Fantasy Tactics, Brave Fencer Musashi, Resident Evil 1-3, Parasite Eve 1 and 2, Ape Escape, RPG Maker...and so much more. Thinking back on it now, this generation of gaming was probably the 2nd-best of all time. The myriad of creativity and the near-non-existence of dudebros made for a great time on Sony's console.

6th Gen: Playstation 2

Another toughie. Everything was pretty good all around. Gamecube got Resident Evil remake, Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Pikmin 1 and 2 and more. Xbox got Halo 1 and 2...what the hell else did I play on Xbox? I know there was other stuff...anyway. Playstation 2 had too much. Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, God of War 1 and 2, Dance Dance Revolution series, God Hand, Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City, Guitar Hero...just so much stuff.

7th Gen: Xbox 360

Not tough at all. The Wii had some great stuff like Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Metroid: Other M (strictly gameplay POV), Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, Donkey Kong Country Returns (minus the waggle control), Mario Kart Wii (best in series), Smash Brawl and such. The PS3 has gems like Uncharted 1-3, MAG, Demon's Souls...and more....But the 360 has been the defining console of this generation. I have played so much stuff and had so many good times with games like Dungeon Defenders, Halo 3 and Reach, Left 4 Dead, Mr. and Ms. Splosion Man, Dead Rising, Borderlands 1 and 2, Resident Evil 5 (partially 6), BlazBlue, Street Fighter 4 and Super, Batman Arkham Asylum/City...it's staggering.

There you have it.

3rd Generation - NES: This was my first real console. I had an Atari 2600, but I really wasn't getting into games until the NES. Also, I didn't really have the opportunity to play any of the other third gen consoles until emulation came around. But even if I had it all, I'd probably still stick with NES.

4th Generation - SNES: Hands down, no contest. Even today, SNES is one of my favorite consoles of all time. A huge library and games that are better than modern day triple A titles. Not to mention it houses my all time favorite game, Chrono Trigger. Can't say enough how great this console is. Not to hate on the Genesis. It was also a very solid console. But it just didn't have the massive library of must have titles the SNES had.

5th Generation - Playstation 1: The Playstation was the first console to pull me away from the big N. And along side the SNES, this was the golden age of gaming for me. If I had to pick a single point in time where I could only play those games, I would lock myself in right at PS1 assuming I could still play SNES. There are just so many great titles I wouldn't even know where to begin. From Final Fantasy, to Resident Evil. PS1 had it all.

6th Generation - Playstation 2: Not to be out-done, the PS2 was also an amazing machine. It brought games that are still within my top ten of all time. Games like Devil May Cry, Beyond Good and Evil, and Disgaea. The Gamecube had it's own share of amazing games. But some of them got ported over anyways... such as Resident Evil 4.

7th Generation - Xbox 360: No other generation has had as much debate as 7th. But honestly, I don't see the contest here. With the 360 came the medium of only play that has set the standard. You need to match this to even been in the running. Once again, I can play games with people like I did way back in the SNES era. Playing with friends who don't live close enough for cough co-op. Not only is the online perfect, but the XBLA marketplace has some must have titles such as Dust: An Elysian Tail. And they are incredibly cheap. Not to mention they bring back HD version of some of my favorites such Perfect Dark, Beyond Good and Evil, Tony Hawk, and Earthworm Jim. It is at least worth mentioning that it pains me to not pick the PS3. Out of all three consoles, I believe the PS3 had the best exclusives. Uncharted, Disgaea, 3D Dot Game Heroes, God of War, Valkyria Chronicles, and a whole lot more was playable only on PS3. But it lacked the online so that I could share that experience with my friends. Same for the Wii. It probably had the LOWEST number of must play exclusives and the WORST online system. Not to mention the worst controls I've ever seen introduced to home consoles.

And that's mine. Judging by the track record, I only stick with a company as my favorite for two generations before I move over. I mean, I'll own them all, but there can be only one favorite, right? But yeah, looks like the Xbox 540 or whatever will probably be my next pick if ^ this is anything to go by. This was a fun thing to think about Ix.

Generations
Third Generation:
Nintendo Entertainment System - I think it's self-explanatory. I mean... c'monnnnn.

Fourth Generation:
Super Nintendo Entertainment System - I think that it has the most titles I just couldn't be without. RPGs especially. The controller is just amazing as well, I still think nothing has topped it really. I wish we'd actually get the Wii Classic controllers modeled after the actual replica SNES ones in the US like Japan got.

Fifth Generation:
Sony PlayStation - This was actually a really hard choice. I just can't live without the RPGs. I love the N64 a lot as well, but I had to give this one up to the PS.

Sixth Generation:
Sony PlayStation 2 - I REALLY do like the Gamecube... but once again, game library... RPGs... trend.

Seventh Generation:
Microsoft Xbox 360 - No contest. While I have all three, no one did online better... no one did a game library better. No one even tried. Plus, I think the Netflix functionality and Hulu and Last.fm especially are awesome, and make this as awesome as the DVD player was for me in the PS2. I got my PS2 when DVDs were so new, but Netflix etc was first supported by the 360 and stuff... and they weren't super new, but it was to me. And the whole watching it with your party? Yeah, it wins for that as well. For me it just is like this glove of gaming and entertainment with friends.

I have to split mine into two timelines.

First, what I would own today.
NES: Classic platforming heaven
SNES: Possible the most well rounded library to date
PS1: RPGs that I could not live without. Arc the Lad, Star Ocean 2, Tales of Destiny, SaGa Frontier, Final Fantasies 9 and Tactics, the list goes on and on.
PS2: Many games on the PS2 can stand the test of time at least up until today
360: Obviously the only real option for me.

Second, what I would own as they came out.
NES: Same
SNES: Same
PS1: Same
Xbox: This console had a damn fine online experience. Even superior to the Wii and Wii U. Solid action games, great RPG's (PS2 had more and arguably better) including Phantasy Star Online; Fable, Mech Assault, Steel Battalion (the online MP one), Phantom Crash, Halo, Halo2, and a huge lineup of great racing titles. Just being a part of Xbox LIVE as it was forming was a blast. I wouldn't trade that for anything the PS2 gave me during the same time.
360: Same

Ah, I have been meaning to contribute with my picks for a while. Then I forgot. :blush

Third Generation
NES hands down. Mainly because it was the only console I played back then.
One of my all time favorite games is for the NES (Mendel Palace) and that's not counting the classic Mario games I dont mind playing once in a while.

Fourth Generation
SNES for the same reasons as NES. While I did get to play some Genesis games, The SNES has a lot of games I played and loved. Having the multi tap adapter and playing Super Bomberman, Secret of Mana and Tiny Toon Adventures: Wacky Sports Challenge... that was priceless.

Fifth Generation
Here I things start getting complicated for me. N64 had Ocarina of Time and F Zero X and Playstation had Wild ARMs, FF Tactics, Suikoden and a ton other RPGs that I loved. Wait.. no it's not that hard. Playstation had a lot more titles I loved thatn N64 so it gets my vote.

Sixth Generation
Argh, this is one is kind of though. I didn't have a PS2 until a bit late in it's life cycle, and it had it's usual share of RPGs I loved, but Gamecube had Smash Melee and Dreamcats had Skies of Arcadia, Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Phantsay Star Online. Once again, I think I'd sacrifice those favorite games and go with the one who had a bigger amount of games I liked overall: Playstation 2.

Seventh Generation
You know, I only had a Wii until a while ago, so my Wii library is bigger than my PS3. But some of my favorite Wii games are on PS3 too and I know I'll be able to saciate my RPG thirst better so.. Playstation 3 it is...
