Blueberry Tea and the red bean ice cream you mentioned is the mad note.

Even if it weren't for Princess Nia, I'd like to think i would still visit Kita nearly every time I came to Houston to see Ix, my mother, or whoever else. The atmosphere is definitely among the neatest, cleanest, and most relaxing of any restaurant I've ever been to, and the food, while certainly as expensive as what I would take home a night from my first job in high school, is way too good to pass up if you have the money. Quality matches price easily.

I am in slight disbelief at that sushi! I mean, I love spicy- don't get me wrong, but man!

Even so, when I was working in the city, Soho Sushi had some fusion stuff and it was amazing. I'd love a chance to try the "Chi-to" roll if only for that reason. And I'd imagine that Kita would have a bunch less snooty business people than my particular Soho Sushi.

I had forgotten how much I like sushi actually. This past weekend I was out of town, and over the two nights I was there, I ate 6 different rolls. But yeah, the next time I end up at Kita, I think I will try the cheeto roll. But to be honest, cheetos on sushi sounds less appetizing than raw fish... just sayin.

It's that time again!

Quote:
Once again, the allure of pizza is too much for the Weekend Foodie as we head to yet another pizza place. However, this is no ordinary pizza place. When I went up to Arkansas to see my good friend Lantis and his wife over New Year's, it has become kind of a tradition now that we must swing past Larry's when I visit. Please, read on!

Reviewing Recap
How about your reviewing? Well, to start off, I want to say that I won't be writing any negative reviews. There's many reasons for this. For one, each of these chefs put their ankles into the dishes, so I don't think it's fair to say "Oh, this food sucks and the chef sucks". Another is that culinary experiences are unique for every individual. Just because I might not like the flavor of something, doesn't mean that someone else won't love it. For these reasons and more, here is my rating scale for each individual item:

Weekend Foodie's Choice
I like it!
Not my cup of tea.

Remember, "Not my cup of tea" doesn't mean I hated it. It means it's not a flavor that I, personally, am fond of. Nothing more, nothing less.

Let it also be known that I do not add ANY seasonings to the foods I eat. That defeats the purpose of writing these stories. It’s not telling you guys the real deal. That said, let's get started!

Episode 6 – Larry's Pizza
El Dorado, AR
Pizza place with a very unique hook.
http://larryspizzaofarkansas.com/

So, as I mentioned in the beginning, I was visiting Lantis and his wife over the New Year's weekend. One day, we were hungry and we all decided to go to Larry's, where I would bring Lantis' wife Rachael in on what this whole thing was about. But not to get ahead of myself, Larry's is a small, simple and clean pizza shop with one hook that made me perk up the first time Lantis mentioned it to me: The Pizza Parade. The Pizza Parada is where servers go around to all of the tables in the restaurant with hot, freshly done pizzas and ask if patrons want a slice or two. And the beauty of this is that during the hours the parade is in session, the chefs at Larry's are cooking up an extremely wide range of pizzas and dessert pizzas! In one visit or even 3 visits to Larry's, it's impossible to try all their variations!

So, we sat down and discussed the platform with Rachael and she thought it was cool. Unfortunately, this chick eats like 3 slices of pizza and she's done. Meanwhile, I have the arduous task of tasting 10 different slices. Let's begin, shall we?

THE MEAL
Pizza Parade – $10
Unlimited pizza. As much as you can shove into your face and make it out alive.

All of the pizzas at Larry's are thin crust, but more like a standard crust in texture. They are not crunchy like a Pizza Hut thin crust, that is. Additionally, the tomato sauce of the pizzas are quite thin as well and don't necessarily pack a big punch, but you can taste it. The cheese of all of them has a pretty standard mozzarella. The flavor is pretty mild and not the best I've ever had, but it's a good enough cheese. Not bad at all. That said, because of the way the pizza parade is set up, this writeup is going to feature a slightly-different layout, but still basically the same. Read on.

Cheese - I like it!
Standard simple cheese pizza. Cheese, tomato sauce.
Notes: Good and simple.

Image

Pepperoni - Weekend Foodie's Choice!
Cheese, tomato sauce, pepperoni.
Notes: Larry's Pizza's pepperoni is top-tier, no joke. The 'roni is nice and thick and kind of spicy. And the slice is BLANKETED from tip to top with the stuff! If I could have, I would have just eaten pepperoni all day.

Margherita - I like it!
Cheese, tomatoes, olive oil, oregano.
Notes: When I say tomatoes, I mean actual slices of tomato. I'm not a huge tomato fan, but the combinations of this pizza didn't make me hate it. I could eat this again.

Big John - I like it!
Cheese, pepperoni, sausage, onions, green peppers, ham, tomatoes
Notes: This is basically a supreme with sliced tomatoes on it. Unique flavor because of the sliced tomato on top. Solid slice.

BBQ Chicken - I like it!
Cheese, chicken, BBQ sauce
Notes: This featured nice cubes of white meat chicken covered in a good, slightly-sweet BBQ sauce. I could definitely see myself asking for this again.

Left to right: BBQ Chicken, Big John, Margherita, Pepperoni
Image

Bacon Chicken - I like it!
Cheese, bacon, chicken, ranch
Notes: It's exactly how it sounds like. It's a bacon-chicken ranch pizza. Good stuff, no doubt.

Canadian Bacon - I like it!
Canadian Bacon, Bacon, Cheddar and Mozzarella Cheese, Tomato Sauce
Notes: This was a good one. This struck me because the Canadian Bacon was pretty good. The cheese combo was much appreciated as well. I'll be keeping my eyes out for this one.

Left to right: Canadian Bacon, Bacon Chicken
Image

Chicken and Spinach - I like it!
Cheese, spinach, chicken, tomatoes, alfredo sauce.
Notes: Another solid one. I haven't had much love for spinach on pizzas in the past, but it's been changing now that I'm getting up there in years. Good one.

Cheese Alfredo - I like it!
Cheese, alfredo sauce.
Notes: Hot damn, this was quite good. And I'm saying that after eating all the pizzas listed above. I was almost about to give this WFC if not for two other pizzas. I don't know what it is, but that cheese and alfredo sauce came together and had a party in my mouth. Definitely on my return list.

Meat Madness - I like it!
Cheese, tomato sauce, ham, bacon, sausage, pepperoni.
Notes: A meat lover's pizza. It's saucy, peppy, bit spicy, all-around good meat pizza.

Top to Bottom: Cheese Alfredo, Chicken Bacon, Canadian Bacon, Chicken and Spinach, Meat Madness
Image

So, now that I was about to hit the table face first, I remembered that I had to get some of dat dessert pizza I'd had before. The Bavarian Creme Pizza for dessert!

DESSERT
Bavarian Creme Pizza - I like it!
Dessert pizza with a new thick layer of sweet Bavarian creme

Image

This pizza is so good every time. I actually had a 3-way tie between this, the Cheese Alfredo and the Pepperoni, but seeing as I want the WFC award to be given only once per visit, I decided on Pep. Anyway, this so good and smooth. The texture is creamy and sticks to the roof of your mouth a bit. The crust of the pizza being thin helps this a lot. Recommended.

And that's Episode 6, guys and gals. Really, you should all take a trip to this pizza place. The beauty of it is, you'll pretty much have a different experience every time you take a trip on the Pizza Parade. This is the Foodie signing off!

I completely agree with your review here. Larry's is good stuff. I've eaten there several times now and it's always that good.

New Foodie Episode!

Quote:
Once again, it's that time to experiment with what Houston and the surrounding areas have to offer in another episode of Weekend Foodie! This time, I head with Syn to Crabbydaddy's seafood restaurant.

Episode 7 - Crabbydaddy's Seafood and Steakhouse
The Woodlands, TX
Seafood and Steakhouse with a bar located inconspicuously in the Woodlands.
http://www.crabbydaddy.com/

With Syn in tow, who by now should be paying rent for how often he's accompanied me to these Weekend Foodie spots, I head off to the next random restaurant. This time, I pick Crabbydaddy's out of the magazine. How nice. So we head off and we kind of get lost around because of the GPS not being able to pick the place up all the way. But once we hit the general lot, we can pick it up. The outside of the place has various sea-themed props, like a giant crab.

As minorities, we were also looking around to make sure that our kind would be welcome around there. Haha. But after I saw some of the servers, I knew we'd be good. The inside of the place is nice and dark with a candlelit interior. The bar sits next to the entrance with the TVs set on whatever sports game is playing. The tables are hard and wooden, reminding me of a plank of a ship. I thought it was a nice touch. There's a platform for live muscians to play at certain times, but today no one was there. It's too bad, one could say, but I rarely like live music playing while I'm trying to eat, so good for me.

With the server ready to take orders, we begin. Syn orders some type of fish and shrimp basket (Editor's Note: This is called Crabby Daddy's Shrimp Combo) I don't care about but I took a picture of anyway because I might as well, right? Check the pictures for that report.

Without further ado, the report!

APPETIZER
Gator Bites – $9.99
Lightly-breaded fried Louisiana alligator tail

Image

Image

The breading is great. There's so many different peppers and spices in this thing. The breading has a nice crunch, too. I've had gator before back in VA, but Crabbydaddy's was on another level. The tail itself was quite tender and lacked a lot of the wild, swampy taste that I've associated with this dish in the past. The "swamp sauce" that came with it tasted like 1000-island dressing mixed with red pepper and other spices that I can't put my finger on. Great appetizer, for real.

WEEKEND FOODIE SAYS:
Gator Bites: I like it!

THE MEAL
Jumbo Crabcake Dinner – $23
2 crabcakes served sautéed or fried (I picked fried) on a bed of cole slaw with mixed veggies and swamp sauce on the side.

Image

When I saw the cakes hit the table, I got excite. If you take a look at the picture, you would too! This was some of the best crab I have ever had. The flavor is just incredible. It's fantastic, fresh and crunchy. Seasoned to perfection. The cole slaw under it is creamy, rich and flavorful (and crunchy). The veggies are sautéed and slightly peppered and complement the crab spectacularly. The swamp sauce is a perfect touch. Without saying, this claims the top prize this visit.

WEEKEND FOODIE SAYS:
Jumbo Crabcake Dinner – Weekend Foodie's Choice!

DESSERT
Creme Brulee – $7
Warm, creamy vanilla bean cream inside of a hard sugar shell.

Image

I initially wanted something else, but it had nuts in it. The bane of the Weekend Foodie's existence. Therefore, Creme Brulee instead. This is pretty much what the description says. It was a nice and simple dish, but that price tag is a little steep for what it was. Still good, though.

WEEKEND FOODIE SAYS:
Creme Brulee – I like it!

Oh yeah, Syn also ate food. This is what he had:

Image

And that's episode 7. I hope you enjoyed it! Weekend Foodie, signing off!

From the pictures, I say truth. But that's just because I don't like crab meat that much.

Also, I had no idea gator tail was a food. I guess I should've, but hey, you learn something new everyday!:P

Foodie New Episode!

Hey boys and girls, today's Weekend Foodie is a little different. The Foodie has gone out of the Woodlands this time to make a trip to slightly south of the Woodlands. The place is Spring, TX. The place is called the Loose Caboose. Wait for it!

Episode 8 – The Loose Caboose
Spring, TX
A restaurant built from the actual caboose of a train.
http://thefunnelcakexpress.com/

I heard from a co-worker of mine how he went down to this place called Downtown in Spring, TX. Apparently, it's almost like a flea market of sorts, with a few blocks dedicated to many different vendors plying their trades in various ways and people walking all around. Imagine a couple of small city blocks filled with people just walking to and fro with live music playing around the corner from all types of food spots, textile and gift shops and even a pet groomer's shop. That would be Downtown Spring in a nutshell.

However, as you all know, the main reason I head out on the road is not for the gift shops or anything else besides the food. This same guy told me about this place that fixes up BBQ (which is not rare around TX), but they put your choice of BBQ on top of nachos with all the fixin's. And this blew my mind. How had I never thought of putting BBQ on nachos? It's brilliant! So away I went.

When he told me it was called the Loose Caboose and that it was an actual train car, I thought that would be interesting to see. And damn if it wasn't. The Caboose itself is suspended above the ground and it takes a bit of a climb up a staircase to get inside. You actually don't eat inside of the car, since it's way too small. People line up on one side of the car to place orders and then file out of the car on the opposite side. The car is just big enough for their kitchen. They actually bring the food out to picnic tables situated beside the Caboose. They have a wide range of food there, but I opted to only get my main dish. Please, enjoy the report.

Pics of the Caboose:

THE MEAL
Caboose Covered Nachos with BBQ beans – between $6-9
Cheese, sour cream, pulled BBQ pork, jalapenos and BBQ sauce on a bed of nachos. BBQ Beans on the side (as a purchased side item)

Image

Image

After a decent wait and sipping my Coke, a cute thick chick with a classic Sonic the Hedgehog shirt delivered my food. Why would I write that in my report? Well, I thought it was obviously worth a mention. Anyway, the report.

The sauce was slightly sweet and had a vinegar twinge that is not my favorite type of BBQ flavor, but is not a deal-breaker by any means. The pork was tender and had an above-average flavor. However, the nachos themselves were actually quite standard. If someone ever said to you "hey, I'm thinking nachos" and they came back with the most regular-tasting nachos they could find, it would be this. There's nothing bad about them, but nothing really good about them either. It's kind of disappointing, though, because a really bold nacho flavor would kick this dish right in the pants.

The BBQ beans had a simple flavor. The sauce was light, the BBQ flavor was light and the beans were tender. Not a particularly dangerous dish, but it got the job done.

WEEKEND FOODIE SAYS:
Caboose Covered Nachos with BBQ beans – I like it!

DESSERT
Fried Oreos – $5
Oreos dipped in funnel cake batter and deep-fried. Topped with powdered sugar.

Image

And in the "I can't wait to kill myself faster" department, across the street from the Caboose is The Funnel Cake Express, which is operated by the same staff of the Caboose. I noticed they had a sign for Fried Oreos and I was like "yes" so I chose to partake. I've had these before, but never written about them.

The Express' version was quite solid, though, because the inside of it didn't taste greasy much at all. It was almost like a funnel cake where the insides were turned into a nice oreo cake. The powdered sugar on top also made its mark. I'd definitely have to give it up to them to making me take a second glance at this dish.

Fried Oreos – Weekend Foodie's Choice!

That's it for Episode 8. Y'all come back now, y'hear?

Hello y'all. Welcome to another Weekend Foodie! Guess what? It's a pizza restaurant! And technically, I didn't even go there! I had it delivered. I wasn't even going to write up a report about it since I didn't get a full 3 courses like I usually do for these reports, but the flavor of this report's WFC gave me no other choice. So this report is going to be kind of short, but tasty for your eyes!

Reviewing Recap
How about your reviewing? Well, to start off, I want to say that I won't be writing any negative reviews. There's many reasons for this. Episode 9 – Russo's New York Pizzeria
The Woodlands, TX
A phone call away takes the tummy rumblings away.
http://www.nypizzeria.com

Where I live, we get A LOT of mailers from various restaurants trying to get our business. It makes sense to blanket The Woodlands with mailers for your place because people around here are LOADED. Like, I have a good job and I'm doing pretty well for myself, but people around me are living in half million dollar homes and driving almost any premium car you can imagine: Mercedes-Benz, BMWs, Jaguars, the whole nine. So one day, a mailer for the pizzeria lands in my mailbox and since I'm always in the mood to try out different forms of pizza, but today I was too lazy to actually travel to the restaurant, I made the first Weekend Foodie Lazy Foodie pick and had it delivered.

THE MEAL
Pisano Neapolitan – $13.95
Pepperoni, sliced Italian sausage, red onions, roasted peppers and garlic sauce on an extra-thin square crust.

Image

Image

This is the pizza that made me write the report. As described, the crust was almost literally razor-thin. Amazingly, even though the crust was so thin I thought it would crumble when I picked up a slice with too many topics, that moment never came. The crust is incredibly resilient like that. It's crunchy and thing, which means all the flavors of the toppings coat your tongue inhibited. The garlic sauce was light and airy. The pepperoni was nice and a bit spicy. The sausage was zesty, but no spicy. I think using the red onions on it was a good decision, as it gave the entire shebang a distinct personality.

One of the best thin-crust pizzas I've ever tasted, as well as THE thinnest.

WEEKEND FOODIE SAYS:
Pisano Neapolitan – Weekend Foodie's Choice!

Now for the other pizza:

Vegetarian – $14.95 medium
Organic spinach, roma tomatoes, bell peppers (I think they forgot this), white onions, mushrooms, black olives (I requested this off), garlic, cheese and pizza sauce.

Image

Image

So for this one, I got an incomplete pizza, but I'm still going to give an opinion on it. I wanted to try something different, so I decided to give the veggie pizza a whirl. The crust is a standard NY-style crust, which means it's not particularly distinctive about Russo's version, which is not a bad thing. I mean, it's famous for a reason. So, as I started to dig in, I realized a couple of things. First, I don't like slices of tomato on my pizzas. The wetness of the tomatoes make the areas surrounding it soggy. In the end, I actually decided to take them off and the pizza tasted much better than it did. However, at the Foodie, I only report on the full pizza flavor, so there's that. The other thing I realized was that I really like spinach and mushrooms on my pizzas. Those two were the true star in this performance. I just wonder how the pizza would have been if they hadn't forgotten my bell peppers. Oh well, can't do anything about that now.

WEEKEND FOODIE SAYS:
Vegetarian – Not my cup of tea.

Episode 9 is complete. Returning to Foodie Docking Station.

Looks like the worst thing to ever be created. Veggie pizza is still not healthy and just makes pizza taste worse.

Hey gang of fellow food lovers, the Foodie is back again after an extended hiatus caused by MagCon. I will have more Foodie episodes back on the track of one report every two weeks. That said, shall we begin?

Shortly before MagCon this year, my good pal Lantis showed up at my place for two reasons. One was to hang out. The other was to take my game consoles with him so he could transport them to Tennessee for me in his car, because I'd be damned if the airline would handle my bags. So, while he was at my crib, naturally, we got hungry and then we started angling for something. I asked him if he'd ever been to Culvers (which I've been to on several occasions, but never wrote a review on), and he said no. Perfect. Time to introduce him to one of the best-tasting fast-food places I've ever been to.

When you enter Culvers, you're greeted with a clean establishment, with many tables and a few big-screen TVs suspended in air on the latest football or other-sport-that-I-have-no-interest-in game. The menu is properly displayed across multiple screens, as anyone who has been to a fast food place ever should be accustomed to by now. Lantis and I place our orders and the cashiers hand us number stands so they can bring the food out to our table. They mention that the order will be up shortly. Let me add, that when they say it'll be up shortly, they MEAN it. By the time we get your drinks and ketchup, the table was loaded. Amazing service. Now, about the food...

THE MEAL
Pork Tenderloin Combo – between $6-9
Pork tenderloin sandwich, crinkle-cut fries

I decided to be adventurous this visit with the pork sandwich, because I usually get their amazing, flavorful burgers. The only way I can describe their burgers is "fresh." The well-seasoned beef comes together with the fresh tomatoes, pickles, iceburg lettuce, ketchup, mustard and that impeccable lightly-buttered bun to form a burger tasted that's out of this world. It's easily in my top 5 fast-food burgers of all time. Maybe the Foodie should get into list wars one day for a special?

Now, you may have noticed I started this section out talking about a pork sandwich and migrated to a burger. Well, that's because I don't particularly want to talk about this sandwich. The bun is still good, but the flavor of entire thing reminds me of school cafeteria pork patties. Not a flavor I was fond of back then nor now, apparently. The version of this sandwich I had was simply the pork patty and the bun, but I notice on the website that it can come any way you want it. This might have been better if I had put condiments on, but I live by the Foodie Rules.

The fries are solid. They aren't too greasy or too thin. Nothing particularly jumped out at me about them, but nothing bad, either. They're just good. I should note that Culver's has other side items that you could sub out for these, but I just took a standard combo.

Pork Tenderloin Sandwich – Not my cup of tea
Fries - I like it!

Here's what Lantis had:

DESSERT
Ice Cream Waffle Bowl with Hot Fudge and Cookie Dough – $4

After Lantis had his Atlantic Cod basket, he was apparently in no mood for more food. But you and I at Weekend Foodie know that I never end a session without dessert if I can help it! Therefore, I decided I wanted to try their Flavor of the Day, which happened to be the combination above. Generally, I'm not fond of chocolate chip cookie dough because the chips get rock-hard when cold and they become chocolaty shards of glass.

Not this one, though. Culver's has a really unique way of making sure this doesn't happen. Where most places would blend the dough into the ice cream, Culver's has little pieces of cookie dough that the sprinkle on top of your ice cream instead. This makes sure that the dough is soft and the ice cream is cold. By far one of the best combinations out there and easily my best experience with cookie dough ice cream. The waffle bowl itself is pretty thin, but not flimsy at all. It's bendable and all that. It's best just to break it apart by hand. As far as the ice cream's taste, it had a pretty standard vanilla flavor, but that's what vanilla is. Really enjoyable, though!

Ice Cream Waffle Bowl with Hot Fudge and Cookie Dough – Weekend Foodie's Choice!

That's all, yolks! See you for Episode 11!

Nice. I think Lantis's meal was better. But I tend to like Freddy's Frozen Custard and Steakburgers more than Culver's. If you have one of those or a FiveGuys near by, I definitely recommend the trip.

Five Guys is fantastic. I've only eaten there twice, but I really liked it both times.

A bit pricey, but yeah, I totally agree.

Not that pricey considering the quality of the burger in comparison to say... McDonald's or Burger King or Wendy's.

Well yeah, anything's pricy compared to the dollar menu. ^_^
