well, いいですね basically means "it's good isn't it?" or just "It's very good". The two kanji 王女 mean "princess". パ-ル is "Paa-ru"... which I guess is the name Paul. So, "It's good princess Paul." weird.

As for the first quote, here's the full context. It's the opening text of the game.

I managed to so far figure out:

"Silva" appears quite frequently in this game ("Silva Town Castle", "Silva Castle Bedroom", etc.), so I assume that it's meaning "Silver".

Also, in the last parts, translators mention a mother. And into the opening cutscene, I think the princess mentions how her mother is overprotective.

Choose whichever is true based on the beginning of the game. If the snowstorm hasn't come in, choose option 1, if it has, then choose option 2. Which it is kinda depends on whether the verb ending was past tense and the end of a statement, or past tense because another phrase followed it (meaning it isn't past tense at all) and it's kinda hard to tell with this formatting.

The rest:

Quote:
(If you do,) a spirit that lives in that forest will try to steal your eyes.

Do you understand, Princess Pearl? Make sure to keep your mother's words at heart.


Leads me to believe the story of the monster in the forest is one that Pearl's mother told her a lot, and it is being told by someone who has been close to both Pearl and her mother. Likelihood of mother not being alive, or perhaps missing/away somewhere, is high.

No offense intended, but you can't cut out little snippets of information from the game and expect an accurate translation. The いいですね especially takes on a totally different meaning in this context than the one offered by both Lantis and Facts. Make sure to give full contexts for everything in the future and you'll have less issues. :3

Oh, I'm sure. That snippet, I was more curious about the "Pacific - Princess" translation I was getting than anything else.

As for the queen, she's definately alive, and it's possible to visit her as she and the king mourn the loss of the princess.

I think this is a worthwhile reason to give this topic a bump.

"Let's Translate Rappin' MAGIC"

I am going forward with creating a translation patch for RPGT4. Given the other translation projects on Agetec's own forum (sword of moonlight, and shadow tower abyss), I don't see a problem proceeding, and Valk agrees.

Within the coming weeks, I will be asking for people to join the translation effort. I hope that at least a couple people will be willing to help out, and join the team - because there is a lot of work to do, and I can't do everything alone.

I will also be releasing more information about the translation (including technical details - fun!), as well as making public an online translation database system I have been developing that will allow team members to contribute, and give others the ability to submit feedback and help out in other ways.

Later, I will be releasing more details about exactly what kind of help I need, and what tools/resources/abilities different roles are going to need. I will say, however, that top-tier contributors will be needing a legally purchased copy of RPGT4 (eBay is a good place to get one), a basic understanding of hexadecimal math (along with a hex calculator), the hex editor MadEdit (which is free), a Windows computer, and a willingness to learn new things (the ability to put up with monotonous work is a big help too). Understanding of Japanese is not required.

Stay tuned for more to come.

I am working on a document now that describes the translation process. It is basically a step-by-step tutorial that teaches the reader how to translate RPGT4.

My goal is to make it simple enough that anyone can read and understand it, but also serve as a technical guide for those who want to really help me out.

So far I am 8 pages in, and expect it to be quite large when finished... not exactly light reading, but it will be very detailed and filled with many examples and pictures.

I'll be spending a lot of time this weekend working on it.

No ETA quite yet. I may be getting a third job, so that might slow things down a little, but I am making progress on this.

Since I've decided to actually go for it and release a patch, this project is my #1 priority - that said, any other projects I'm working on can be considered postponed for the time being.

Well, I was in college & working two jobs. Now I'm out of college, and the third job isn't too bad. It's mainly just freelance work for a private school.

I have been working on something that should allow a group of people to work together collaboratively to translate RPGT4. I just got the first major step done.

I've written a little program that scans the RPGT4 data files, finds the pointer tables, calculates the text locations based on the pointers, and stores all the data into a central database.

I'm working on the next step now, and when that is done, I hope to get a team together so we can really start tackling the translation in earnest.

Below are two links to the raw data dump. In these pages you can see my translations thus far (in the English page, for the most part), and the Japanese text that still needs to be translated. There is still some cleanup work to do on the database, so there are some entries for non-text data right now (especially on the Japanese page).

The Japanese page is very large, and will take time to load.

I'm still here.

I have been really busy with work, as usual. But I am doing research on stuff for my jobs that will help me with this project.

Looking into new ways of designing web apps. Well, they're not new exactly - I'm just behind the times. :P (For IX's benefit, if he reads this - MVC CodeIgniter framework is awesome)

Hopefully this new approach will really improve my technique and make what I'm working on way, way, better than what it would be otherwise.

Work is still killing me. You can take that as literally as you like.

I've been working on this off and on, in small spurts.

My goal for this: Online system for collaborative translation of RPGT4.

Participants will create accounts with the system, and they will see a list of text to be translated. Each piece of text has its own "page" where information related to it will be presented. Information like the raw text, any suggested translations, comments, screenshot(s), category/classification, related text fragments.

Users will be able to submit suggested translations, and vote on the submissions. Ideally, the most accurate translation would become the highest voted.

Users can upload screenshots, tag text fragments, classify text fragments, mark text fragments as garbage (i.e. non-translatable), and so on.

So it will be a kind of wiki-style approach to game translation.

This set up will allow people who don't know Japanese to contribute by doing things like taking screenshots, tagging unreadable text fragments, using their knowledge of RPGM/T to comment on suggested translations and so on.

To translate the text two main things need to be determined:
  1. The meaning (full translation) of a text fragment
  2. The shortened translation that will fit in the game

Once the full translation has been determined, the shortened translation will need to be determined. This is something that may have to largely be done by me, as it's more of an art than a science - there may be hidden control characters, special byte values, etc. that I'd have to take into account.

I would ultimately go through each entry one at a time and approve/deny the suggested translation based on various factors including available space.

Once everything has been translated to my satisfaction, then I would work to get all of the translations manually entered into the disc image, test it, and create a patch for distribution.

it remains to be seen how many people will be able to help out with this once I get it online.

Obviously, the success of this project is contingent on two main things:

  1. My ability to get the system online and follow through
  2. The participation of the community

I'm sort of hoping that "if you build it, they will come". In other words, if I build the system, then people will come and help out.

Even if something happens and I don't take the final step of creating the final patch, or it takes me an eon to do it, I want all the information publicly available.

To that end, I intend to make the completed source code to the collaborative translation system open source, just as I did with Kupid's source code. This includes the PHP code as well as MySQL database schema and raw data.

The source code, schema, and code documentation will be made available once I'm satisfied that it's reasonably functional. The raw data will always be available for download once the site goes live.

The system will be programmed using the PHP Zend Framework (sorry CodeIgniter, Zend Studio pushed ZF into first place for me), phpDocumentor, and MySQL database technologies.

No estimate right now. I still have a lot to do.
