I recently got a deep-fryer. The buffalo wings I made were heavenly, but a bit conventional. Rather than just making the typical things, I decided to have a little fun with it.

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Up first, we have Deep Fried Oreos.

These are Double Stuff Oreos coated in pancake batter and deep fried to a golden-brown.

Image
Notice the oil being absorbed by the paper towels.

The vanilla cream stuffing is nice and gooey. If you try this, I definitely recommend using the Double Stuff and not the Original Oreos.
The recipe is super simple. Just whip up your favourite pancake batter, dip your cookies, and deep fry in peanut oil (or canola, if you have a peanut allergy) at a temperature of 375 degrees until golden-brown, then drain and dust with powdered sugar. Alternatively, I think that using a funnel cake batter would result in an even richer and more stratifying cookie treat.

They are quite good. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, with a gooey, creamy, filling. Yum.

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Up next are Deep Fried Twinkies.

These are Twinkies snack cakes coated in a modified pancake batter.

Image
Notice the gorgeous gooey cream in the center.
For the Twinkies, I took what I learned from making the Oreos and decided to make the batter a bit sweeter, fluffier, and more crispy. So, I added in a few tablespoons of honey for sweetness, and a tablespoon of baking soda (this causes the batter to fluff up when fried, and also helps make it extra crispy).

These are the most utterly glorious desert items I have ever had in my life. Seriously; nothing I've ever had compares with these. The outside is perfectly crispy (it looks burned in the picture, but it really is just right), the cake inside is warm, and the cream filling melted down into a gooey, creamy, burst of sweet goodness.

Definitely not an every-day kind of treat, but something you shouldn't pass up. I imagine that they would make the perfect side-item for a bowl of ice cream.

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Below are a few other things that I plan to make in the future. I'll update the thread as I progress.

  • Deep Fried Ice Cream
  • Deep Fried Butter
  • Deep Fried Macaroni & cheese
  • Deep Fried Chocolate chip cookie dough
  • Deep Fried Snickers Bar
  • Deep Fried Brownies
  • Deep Fried Apples
  • Deep Fried Cadbury Creme Eggs
  • Deep Fried Tofu (maybe served in dashi)
  • Deep Fried Dr. Pepper

Ideas? Suggestions? I won't eat insects/bugs, fyi (I'm not that adventurous).

That sounds like a great way to add pounds to your frame. :p

I've actually had Deep-fried Oreos at the Virginia State Fair two years ago. It was pretty delicious, but I'd best abstain from it.

How do you mean fried ice cream, though?

You bread/batter ice cream balls, and then deep-fry them.

The breading insulates the ice cream, and it stays frozen while the outside gets nice and crispy. Perfect combination. ^_^

I suggest you take the deep fried butter off the list. I mean, it's friggin' butter! Butter's used to enhance something, not to eat on its own! >_<

I know it's hardly creative, but you should try making your own fried chicken.

You know, I'm not eating it... so yeah, go right on with the butter. I'm curious to see how that tastes. Maybe frying it makes it taste different than what I imagine to be a mouthful of butter.

Also, here:

Well, actually, deep fried butter isn't eaten by itself - it's used as a condiment, like on a baked potato. It's not pure butter, either, but mixed with cream cheese.

I already made deep-fried, breaded, hot wings. I do plan to make fried chicken, of various kinds, eventually as well.

I have to say out of that list, fried Coke was the most interesting. I would suggest using Dr Pepper instead though. But how on earth do you...

The name is actually misleading.

Basically you make a funnel cake batter and use the soda for liquid instead of water.

And I agree about the Dr. Pepper. Added it to the list.

on the uncreative side ye could do onion rings as well, juicy ones like a&w
i think you should deep fry beans. individually. or popcorn!

I bet balls of fried cream cheese would be really awesome too.

I love this thread.

I actually already made onion rings. But they were super, super, thin. When they came out, they were like gossamer strands of cobweb. Biting into them, there would be a wonderful crunch, just before they melted away in your mouth. Pure bliss.

I <3 my mandoline. :)

Hmm... don't know about beans. Maybe I'll do some research.

I might make another thread about popcorn. You can't deep fry that (not the raw kernels anyway), but you might be able to make something like deep fried caramel pop-corn balls.

I just got an oil popper for making popcorn, along with a gallon of coconut oil, a gallon of artificial butter syrup (like they have in theaters), butter salt, several different glazes (toffee, cinnamon, and caramel), and 15 or so pounds of popcorn.

After all the research I did, I think I've figured out the formula for perfect butter popcorn. Now I just need to test that theory.

Lantis wrote:

Actually - the deep fried butter is made out of a combination of butter and cream cheese. The cream cheese acts like a binder, so the butter doesn't liquefy in the hot oil.

I'd like to see someone attempt deep-fried popcorn, using kernals... and the necessary safety precautions, of course.

That's my concern - popcorn is explosive. 375 degree oil and exploding little bombs would be very dangerous; it would throw hot oil all over the place. And since popcorn has so little mass, it would burn very quickly. So, this is something for the Myth Busters to attempt, not me. :P
