Quote:
As it turns out, we now know when that's happening.

"Somehow the guys at Game Informer magazine discovered Duke Nukem Forever's launch date before I did," joked Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software and executive producer of Duke Nukem Forever. "But I cannot imagine any better video game news source team than Game Informer to reveal the moment of truth for the most inconceivable, incorrigible and inspiring turn around story in the history of the video game industry – the coming of Duke Nukem Forever on May 3, 2011."

“The moment fans all over the world have been waiting for is almost here,” says Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “May 3, 2011 marks Duke’s return as he unleashes his brash and brutally honest wit on the world. His return is going to be epic and one that will make video gaming history!”

May 3 is the North American release date. May 6 is worldwide.

Somehow, this feels unreal. Like this game coming out will spell our doom, whether it be by a 'quake or other means.

It won't be by a Quake. They changed to the Unreal Engine. :drums:

Unreal indeed. I don't know how to react or feel about it. How strange.

Almost like it is some devastating news that my mind is telling me to ignore. This isn't happening; this isn't real.

And the fact that Gearbox is doing this allows me to put a lot of trust on this.

So it is out. I have probably logged around 14 hours into it as of last night and I feel like I am near the end. I'm going to be honest here:

If you are a fan of DUKE get it. If you are curious or just want it for the hype and the over one hundred years of development, then skip it. It isn't wonderful. It is just a game about tits and balls. It doesn't have the feel of Duke Nukem 3D. If DN3D is a ten (which it IS) then DNF is a three.

However, being the Duke fan that I am, I still have loads of fun playing it for that simple fact.

The reason Gearbox picked it up after the closure of 3DRealms, is that the founders of Gearbox are the guys that made Duke Nukem 3D and were a part of the initial development of DNF back in 1998.

I have to agree. I consider myself a moderate Duke fan. But I will admit that I did buy the special edition just to have that piece of gaming history. If you only count the existence of games after the crash in '83, then DNF has been in production for have of the time gaming has existed. And as avid a gamer as I believe myself to be, I owed it to myself to pop the extra to have the special edition and play it on day-one.

The underlining joke this whole time has been, "Heh, 12 years in the making... watch it suck." And does it suck? I don't think so. It's it a great game? I wouldn't go that far either. Honestly if I had to compare it to something, I'd say it's about as fun as Prey. The biggest difference between the two for me is that I played $5 for Prey, and 20 times that much for DNF. For what it's worth, I'm enjoying it.

They sure did give you a lot of stuff with the SE though. My bust of Duke now accompanies me at work. And that hard back book of the history of the making of DNF is actually kind of awesome. It also had a bunch of other stuff like a comic book, stickers, poker chips, dice, a deck of cards, high-res pictures, even a freaking papercraft of Duke holding a pigcop's head (it kind of sucks as it's cube based, but that's funny never the less), and some other junk. So yeah, I still think it's worth it just because of what it is. I just wish it was worth it because it was genuinely badass.

TL;DR

This sounds like it'll go on record as one of the biggest disappointments in gaming history.

its a strong lesson to why you cant be in perpetual development.

ive yet to sink my teeth into this, and ive really wanted to. i know its going to be a bloody mess but i want to play it anyway. i was contemplating a preorder but i couldnt justify the extra cost vs my salary. sometimes you just need to play a game thats about nothing but tits and balls.

I believe the reviewers are wrong about this game, although the story isn't up to par and doesn't humor me much the gameplay is actually more than decent.

Eh, I never really cared about the Duke, so no matter how good the game might have been, I would have still skipped it.

After watching this video review, I've decided I'd be a lot better off looking into Duke Nukem 3D.
