A great victory was earned on this day.

May it be remembered through the ages.

So does this mean he's been lurking in the shadows the whole time, or he just randomly decided to show up and we won't see him again until page 200.

Probably a lurker. Waiting in the wings, so to speak.

And I didn't think the naming scheme in Cross was that bad. The characters those names were attached to were another matter.

No, I'm pretty sure Skelly as a name even if it wasn't the name of a skeleton is still a bad name. Same with Draggy, Funguy, Turnip, and pretty much the whole lot of them.

I liked Funguy (of course, my title says as much). I don't remember Turnip as a name, though I do remember that there were two sentient pieces of vegetation in your party, which is always what used as the proof that the game had too many party members. Developers, if the walking, talking vegetable in the group is not unique, it's time to trim some fat.

Turnip was one of the more difficult to recruit characters because it required a specific series of steps that were in no way explicit. He's more of a secret character than anything. He's also completely in homage to Frog from Trigger.

It's also impossible to think of the naming scheme in Cross as being separate from the characters themselves. In almost every case, the name is derived directly from the character's traits. Aaaand in all of the cases that apply, the name chosen was awful.

As awful as the characters themselves.

No, I had Turnip; I got every character at one point or another, probably played through the game three or four times over the years. I just didn't remember his name (the last playthrough was five or six years ago). he was the one with the medieval speech patterns that you acquired from that Another World island where the Arni Village chief lived, correct?

Yeah, it's a general rule of thumb that once a RPG's playable cast goes past about 10-12, character quality if going to suffer from diluted individual attention. And they missed that sweet spot by a country mile.
