What does it do? Your CPU (Central Processing Unit) or processor is, in the most basic term, the brain of your computer. It handles running your operating system and all your programs that are running. The amount of tasks that your computer hand handle at one time is primarily based on your processor.

THIS is not a computer:



This is a monitor. It displays the signals from your video card in your computer as a picture which is what you are looking at now.

THIS IS A TOWER:



It houses all the parts that make up your computer. It holds your motherboard, your hard drives, your processors, your RAM, your power supply, your CD-ROM, your video cards, and all other devices within it. This is what makes up your computer.

When you refer to this box, it is either a computer or a tower.

To be fair, I thought for the longest time that "CPU" was an abbreviation for "computer".

I think those are commonly known as Destop Cases. Other than that there are Micro cases, Mid cases, and Full cases. Then the newest of the lot is the Shuttle case. These are small form factor computers that are quite small. Mostly used for LAN party goers.

Yeah, but people don't verbally say BRB normally. But I hear CPU spoken aloud all the time.

@ Stythe - In one day, I had two different people at work come up to me and ask me about their "hard drive" and their "modem" and it took me half of forever to figure out they weren't talking about a hard drive or modem. Then this same thing happened online in the same day.

It's just really irritating and it needs to stop. Hence the service announcement above.

I mean, really. Calling a computer a hard drive is like me calling an entire car an engine. Or, even worse, calling a computer a modem is about the same as calling a car a gasoline pump. It's just... really really dumb.

But yeah I get comments like that all the time from family. I swear you fix a computer once and you're a gosh darn computer wizard, who should be able to figure out any computer problem from the vaguest descriptions ever.
