ITT, we shall talk about those little details in horror games that scare the beejezus out of you. We all know the dogs crashing through the windows in Resident Evil almost gave you a heart attack. I'm interested in the little details, set pieces in horror you guys remember.


Resident Evil 1:
The diary of that worker that read:

4/ Itchy Tasty.


Eternal Darkness:
The insanity effects. The scariest one being the one that said you lost all your gameplay data! Haha!


In general:

Bloody bathroom stalls. I don't know why, though. It just seems like a violation of privacy or something. Haha.

The shadow of the zombie as he comes down the stairs to the kitchen.



Silent Hill 3 ->
The mannequin who expels a feminine shriek when Heather isn't looking at her and when you recheck the mannequin, it has no head! (*cringe*) .... okay, and the bathroom stall in the mall area that is spattered with blood.



Fatal Frame 1, 2, and 3 ->
Every single freaking ghost who takes you by surprise.

Resident Evil 2:
The constant fear of Mr. X crashing through the wall/roof/floor.


Also, windows in every horror game scare me after the Resident Evil incident.

Have any of you played Dino Crisis? I doubt it but:
The creepy ass music in almost every area of the game (including areas without any dinosaurs).

Two from Bioshock:

You're in the room with the dead person tied to the table because they were performing experiments on them, and this smoke fills the room or something. No big deal...but the moment you turn around, there is a splicer RIGHT IN YOUR FACE.

The other one is that room full of water and there's a splicer standing like a statue. I'm like, he's prolly gonna move. But he doesn't. You get past him, do some stuff, come back to the room, and he's f*cking GONE.

Dino Crisis
When the raptors would jump into the lasers of the laser locked doors.

Fatal Frame and Dino Crisis 2
Being attacked from the side

Silent Hill and Silent Hill 2
The fog and ambient sound


Silent Hill
The heavy pounding sound effects especially in the bloody rooms.
The sound of the Merry-Go-Round


Silent Hill 2
The premise that you are going to Silent Hill after receiving a letter from your wife who died several years ago.
The package that required you to answer questions about Silent hill.
Using weapons like a piece of wood with a nail at the end of it.


Fatal Frame and Silent Hill 2
Deep and distant sound of effects of souls in the background.


Fatal Frame
The blackness of the courtyard and the fact that it all takes place in a single mansion as opposed to multiple locations.

RE Remake and RE0
The graphics, especially the control switch in water that could electrocute you and the light breeze of of the trees in the corridor of the mansion of RE Remake.

RE4
The courtyard with the hounds


Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
The movement of the monks upstairs at work.
Opening the casket, hearing the monk's utter "This is devil's work".

Clock Tower 3
Hearing the piano music vigorously played while standing outside.
The cut scene with the little girl
The cut scene with the blind mother and son
The look and movement of the brother and sister enemy duo.

Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare
Turning around in the cave and seeing the glowing pentagram.

Curse: The Eye of Isis
The dark mechanical and industrial room
The sound of the enemy blunderbuss


Dino Crisis 3
The thought of playing it and then the realization that you actually beat it.



EDIT:
Whispers in the Woods
The cold foreboding sound of the wind as you leave your warm safe mansion on the way to traverse the valley.
The appearance in the valley of the enemy apparitions one by one in the distance before you get to the town.

Left 4 Dead
The details of the environments
The types of environments
The eerie, suspenseful light piano music at the end of its opening cinema.
The stillness of the title screen image with suggestions of rain-slick darkness


PS1 Resident Evils
The opening vocal narration "Resident Evil" and then its number.
The low cloudy sound during load times when entering a new room.

The fact that Sega is probably going to continue making Sonic games.

And that counts. The games they make are nothing short of horror.

At one point when you glance in at the downstairs bathroom mirror, it is lightly smeared with blood, and after a moment the Crimson Nail ghost appears behind you as though she is about to strike, ... and of course when you turn there isn't anything there.



Silent Hill 4
.... The child-sized shadow that appears in your bedroom closet, ... and is accompanied by the disembodied sounds of crying! Holy S***, SK has JUST REACHED HIS BRAVERY LIMIT!!!

Fallout 3:
As you're walking through a eerily quiet, dark, long-abandoned building, you suddenly hear rapid foot-steps. You look around you, and don't see anything but darkness and shadow, but you can still hear them - pounding, louder and louder. You know what's coming, and you get anxious, spinning around trying to figure out where it's coming from. Then it leaps out at you from behind; the light from your Pip-Boy glinting off the creature's sunken eyes and rotting flesh.


LoZ:OoT:
The first time you exit the Temple of Time, after having been locked away for seven years. Mere minutes ago, the courtyard of Castle Town was bright and full of life. But as you make your way from the temple, you stop in horror as a feeling of dread sweeps over you. Everything is burnt, withered, and the courtyard is filled with ReDead.


LoZ:MM:
Actually, pretty much the entire game is creepy. Termina is a doomed land, filled with darkness and despair, an angry moon constantly hanging overhead, a clock continuously ticking, reminding you of the urgency of your task.

Actually, the whole Spirit Temple made me want to not play OoT anymore. And I was 26 when I first played it


Metroid Prime
The first time you lay eyes on Metroid Prime. How it looks like some sort of black skull, with disembodied eyes sprouting from the empty sockets


Tomb Raider
So there is this one level, where toward the end you have to wander up out of a pool of water, and you end up in front of an ornate temple. Well all seems well until the centaur statues that are decorating the stairs to the entrance burst out of their stone shells and start shooting fireballs at you.


Metroid Fusion
Any time you walk into an empty room, get half way through it, then hear the door open again...

Rebecca: Richard. Don't talk. He seems to have been bitten by a poinsonous snake. But the size of the wound is abnormally large.

Richard: It's not just a poisonous snake. It's a MONSTER!

Well, since we aren't doing just horror anymore. If anyone played the original Manhunt, the ending of that game scared the sh*t out of me. I remember posting about it way back when. But basically you are locked on the lowest floor of a delapidated hotel with no power and a very fat man wearing the skin of a pig chases you around with a chainsaw... and you are unarmed. I will not be able to formulate words to propperly explain to you how scarey this really was.
