After watching several of Dray's LPs on RPG Maker 1 games, I keep running into things I wish RM1 had. Also, over the past several years working on my own project with SK, we've found many limitations as well as functions that are just seemingly missing in RPG Maker 1. List those here.

The first one I'm going to point out is that I wish that RPG Maker 1 had the ability to add as many custom title screens as you want. Not only could you make interesting titles for games divided into chapters, but if you were using imported images... you could actually make still frame images to depict scenes. But alas, you can have only one.

I agree, and I'd go farther and say no limit to custom sprites. I also wish there was some way to create our own music and put it in the game.

Some of the limits are pretty annoying, and I keep running into them. Things like the 120 event limit in levels or 90 page limits in events. They force you to think of ways around these limitations.

But these are just nitpicks really. I love rpgm1.

Don't know how realistic you want our "wishes" to be, but here's mine -

  • Fewer memory limitations
  • Ability to use custom tilesets
  • Ability to use other custom graphics & animations
  • Custom sounds & music
  • Weather system
  • A keyboard for text input

I am rusty with RPGM1 so maybe some of these things are possible.

I agree more than one title screen is huge and keyboard input obviously.

It would be nice to see the characters during battle but I guess this isn't necessary.

Items that when used trigger events.

At least one button that you could assign an event.

The ability to change the standard battle music.

A standard graphic that looks like a key.

And on that note, it's rather annoying that custom sprites cut off along the right edges. Even if you simply saved the existing dragon sprite, you'd find that when it's facing to the right, its nose gets cut off, yet there's no such issue with the default sprites. But it would be a nice feature, because then you could group small sprites into a larger one, without it looking like it got sent through a paper shredder.

It also would've been nice had RPGM1 supplied more useful graphics to be used for cliffs, ledges and mountains. I've got a canyon that I'm going to (probably) have to make, sometime, and it's not going to be pretty.

i think my cardinal wish would be to real time activation rather then forcing the player to touch or check an event. so many possibilities open up with that simple feature. i can already see the workarounds for that one.

id also like the activating two events at once. so many times where id want to be able to move a group of events simultaneously.

I wish RPG Maker 1 had ambient tracks. You know, a track for raining, waves, bugs at night, birds in the day, ect.

you can get that with the right event work, and SE's, but yeah, the effect kind of breaks down when you have to force the player to continue to hit x to make the ambiance work. :/
