I just got the game - haven't started it yet. As you may know, you can import your character from ME1 into ME2 to have various things transfer over (alignment, which characters are dead/alive, as well as the results of supposedly over 100 choices that you made in the first game).

As I had played ME1 on the 360, and I got ME2 for the PC, I was really annoyed at the prospect of having to play the entire game over again just to import my character. But, I discovered this wonderful repository of ME1 saved games and managed to find a save that met my criteria exactly.

Now I'm ready to go save the galaxy. :D

Yes, she does. But I'd much rather take Garrus any day.

I got the game on Tuesday (for 360). I'm about 4 hours in.

My original save is on a different hard drive so I decided to start a completely new character in ME2.

So far, I've noticed that some decisions are made for you from the first game, such as:

ME1 spoilers!
Kaidan is dead if you play as a male. If you play as a female, Ashley is dead. Wrex is dead if you don't import a save. If you don't import a save, the Council was killed in the Citadel battle.

ME2 SPOILER!!!
You find Garrus, and he joins the party!!!! He was my favorite character next to Wrex. Speaking of Wrex, even if you import a save where he lived, he won't join you, he becomes the chief back on his home planet.

He was my favourite from the original, as indicated by my previous post (I wasn't being sarcastic or ironic ;)).

I'm ten hours in, or so. I really think that this game is better than ME1 in every way, thus far. Although, surveying planets does get a bit tedious after a while.

Yeah, I agree with the surveying. I'm not really a fan of the new way they did abilities though. What's with only having like 5 abilities and 4 levels for each?

It seems rather simplified. After dozens of RPGs with 15 different stats and a whole palette of skills and abilities, ME2 looks kind of lacking in comparison. It really limits how deeply you can customize your character.

Yeah. Though From what it looks like, many of the abilities, once you get to level 4, unlock different ability branches.

Still, I would have like more options for customizing my character. :P

But that's the only complaint I have about this game right now. Well, other than certain armours have helmets that are not removed during cut-scenes. It's kind of funny having the camera focus on the MC's face and just seeing a helmet. For a game that touts it's emotionally involving character interactions, you'd think that they'd remove the helmets for cut-scenes (like thy did with Dragon Age).

Well, even the first Mass Effect game removed your helmet for cut scenes (Except for on certain planets where it makes sense that your character needs their helmet on).

They probably keep it on because they figured it would make your choice matter more. Having a helmet on just when you are walking around doesn't make much of a difference. I would have liked ME1 more if you could keep your helmet during cut scenes.

Also, I just recruited "Archangel"

ME2 spoilers!
He is so much more badass than he was in the first one. I like how they kinda gave him Wrex's personality, though he still has a "Justice" side.

He's definitely more gritty and experienced than in the first. In ME1, he was kind of young, naive, and righteous. Since going off on his own, he's matured, and his personality colored by the realities of life in the lawless parts of the galaxy.

His physical appearance is a reflection of the changes to his character. He's been damaged, scarred, both physically and psychologically during his time away from Shepard.

This may turn out to be one of my top favourite games of all time. :D

Well, I finally finished.

My thoughts:

The ending was a bit anticlimactic - granted, that's very common for sequels. But it felt like there wasn't a terrible lot of story progression. You learn a little bit about the reapers, but not much. What you do learn is more pseudo-science fiction than it is science fiction ("absorbing the essence of a species," what does that even mean? :skeptical). It was kind of a let down.

It felt to me as if this game is irrelevant in the terms of the trilogy. What happened in this game that really needed to happen to move the major story arcs along? Nothing. They could have just as easily skipped this one and went straight to the final game. There was no analogue to Vigil, no truly major revelations (big freakin' deal, the Protheans were turned into the collectors - was that so much of a shock given that, in the first game, you learn the same thing basically happened to the Keepers; and that the collectors, like the Keepers, are insectoids?), and you don't get to blow up any planets.

I would have liked much more dialogue and interaction with the party members. At the end, it felt kind of empty. Garrus didn't have nearly as much dialogue as I would have liked - the same for Legion, and Tali, and Samara, and..... so on.

My biggest gripe is that there were no same-gender romance options. In this day and age, they should be included by default. Actually, Id even have liked a Legion romance option. But that one may just be me. :P

That said, I thought the game was excellent as a whole. The gameplay was significantly improved over the first one, I'm glad they got rid of the Mako and refined the inventory system.

I'm very much looking forward to ME3 - and some tangible DLC for ME2.
