I have always been annoyed by people that call the PS1 a PSX. I also hate that ePSXe affirms this misuse of the name.
The PS1 is the PlayStation and the slimmed down PSone.
The PSX is this:

Please spread the word.

Part marks awarded.

PSX was used to refer to the Playstation 1 prior to its official release. It also stuck because it sounds (and looks, really) better than PS1.

It wasn't until that pictured system was released that the confusion began.

Yeah I know about the code name, but that's like me calling the GameCube the Nintendo Dolphin.
Sure it may look and sound better to some, just not to me personally.

There'd be nothing wrong with calling it the Dolphin, except that most people would look at you like you're from another planet because that particular name didn't stick like PSX did.

Fact is, both "PSX" and the "Dolphin" were used as de facto names for the systems at a time.

In the end, it's arbitrary. Whining about how people refer to something that we named is, and always has been, a totally moot point.

Sort of like how we still call myoky as "facts" sometimes.

Actually, exactly like that.

Doesn't make it wrong.

Well, I won't make people change how they say it, I just thought I would get this out and show why I get annoyed by it.

Call it what you will. I will too.

@Stythe
If insultobot is annoyed by what people call it, 'whining' about it is not necessarily a totally moot point because he is attempting to reduce annoyance and promote consistency in communication. It might not be practical or of particularly great importance but it is certainly not totally moot.

I'd also like to mention that one reason the "PSX" abbreviation stayed was because we didn't know that it'd be followed with the PlayStation 2 (wow, what an original console name), so calling it the PS1 wouldn't have made sense. So by the time the PS2 or the for-real PSX came out, we had already been calling the PS1 the PSX for years.

Granted, I call it the PS1.

Back then I called it the Playstation. I never liked the term PSX.

Actually I call it just plain and simple "Playstation" I don't associate a number or letter to it or anything. I mean, everyone knows what you mean. Playstation 2 or 3, and I say just that. If I don't add a number, I'm talking about the original.

That is unless we are talking about current gen games. Like when someone asks what Uncharted was for... I'd just say playstation. Which is correct in the sense of brand names. But yeah... something like that.

In real life situations, when I'm talking to someone, I would just say playstation. Ex: "hey man, go get the the playstation and we can play some Shadow of the Colossus."

But on the interweb, I usually call the original playstation the PSX. From what I knew, the PSX ws the slimmed down version of the PS1, as that is what everyone called it when it came out, as opposed to the "Playstation" which the normal one was called.

I dunno.

You laugh at a joke about how things are referred to and then try to argue that it isn't a moot point.

Consistency. Get some.

The joke is regarding something with the same name sounding different and the sound not being able to be communicated via the usual means of the internet. Insultobots comments are about the usual means of text, where a difference in text name is EASILY communictated via the means of the internet. These are two different things and that is why I address them differently.

There is nothing inconsistent about my point.

You sure don't. The slimmed down PS1 was actually called the PS(one) :P

Yeah, well I clearly remember asking someone what it was called when it came out, and they told me that it was called a PSX.

Huh, I always thought that they used PSX because PS was used for something else. (Like Gamecube being GCN since Neo Geo Color was NGC)
And since before PS2, there was no need to add 1 to PS, I just stuck to PSX.

Text or voice makes no difference, the meaning of the original line is still well understood. That's the only reason his one-liner at the end still makes some form of sense given the ambiguity that text-form imposes on the line - you still read and understand it in the intended way.

That's also, for the same reason, what makes calling a PS1 a PSX not incorrect, but also not "correct". They still mean the same thing - this wouldn't be an argument at all if Sony never made the mistake of creating a system using a name they'd already used for something else.

Additionally, hiding behind this later-created system and whining about how all your peers call something is just butthurt internet users trying to be more knowledgeable about things that don't matter.

Wahhhmbulance, fgt.
