Some people call it soda and some people call it pop. Calling it soda-pop makes it more inclusive and also keeps it a little more timeless and traditional.

Now I am going to pour me some more soda-pop.

Not trying to be a dick here... but I thought you hated traditions. And also, I really don't like the "pop" at the end. It just sounds weird.

Actually, a lot of us around my area just call everything what it is. Coke, Dr. Pepper. And if we are asking anyone, we just ask if they'd like a 'drink.'

Shush Lantis! People are supposed to think us southerners refer to everything as "coke".... It makes us sound more hickish...and will help keep them unsuspecting as we prepare to take over the world!

The best is at a restaurant when you say, "I want a coke," but you really want a different drink and they bring you a coke. Seen it happen before.

@ShadowFox1001

I should be clearer that I don't like traditions that I don't sign up for, like I don't like to be expected to participate in Thanksgiving just because everyone else wants to get together. And there are tons of these kinds of traditions, small and large where there are such expectations of me, that cause me to be outspoken about it.

But when it is traditions that I myself "sign up" for (and require of no one else) then I can enjoy them. Like I like the tradition where my cousins, my brother, and I all agree to play Halo 3 on Tuesday.

I actually call it "pop", not "soda" and I've been religiously drinking pop since at least the late 70's, so when I moved out to the east coast several years ago, I had to get used to (and stomach the idea of) calling it "soda" which is against my "pop" religion.

I figured I'd compromise and call it soda-pop in general and pop when in the midwest and soda on the east coast.

Yes. Coke was introduced in 1886 and has been a staple of American culture since the turn of the century. You see Coca-Cola adverisments and consumption in classic films, paintings, and stories.

Dr. Pepper was introduced in 1885.
Pepsi 1903 (1886 in a different name)
RC 1905
A&W 1919
7-UP 1929 (with a different name)

If you look openly at American culture and how much soda-pop, is and has been part of our daily lives, traditions, and customs over generations and generations, I think it's timeless, traditional worth becomes clear.

@bo - taking a sh*t has been around longer than that and you don't see it being advertised as timeless and traditional. 1885 is not particularily timeless when it comes to anything, and if a soft drink is your version of traditional culture then maybe i have all this wrong and you're asking for pity? advertising large careless corporations as family friendly, timeless, and traditional on the other hand, now that's culture reared out of generations of market research and disguised to become part of your daily life, traditions, and customs.

Sumi you should pity us as that is all we have. Commercialized tradition.

I also thought I would pop in to say:
That stuff is damned good Bon. I like Canada brand more though.
