[quote]Midway Games Inc. and its affiliates filed a motion on February 23, 2009 seeking court authority to implement a key employee incentive plan covering up to 29 employees. Midway Games filed for bankruptcy protection on February 12, 2009 (more details are available here).

The motion describes the group of 29 eligible employees as “officers, management-level employees and other non-insider key employees.â€

I agree with Jamos. Midway doesn't do all that great of games outside of Mortal Kombat... but I really like Mortal Kombat. If they get rid of it, Midway is going to fall off the gaming radar for many people.

Though...

It'll be nice seeing MK vs SF that ISN'T some random Mugen matchup on youtube.

Actually I really liked Deception and Armageddon. And in fact, I'll take this oppertunity to go into why I really like Mortal Kombat as a series over other fighting titles.

You see, I love God of War and Devil May Cry. And that does have soemthing to do with MK as a fighter. In GoW and DMC, you have a good deal of creative control in combat. And that usually leads to a very high combo counter. Nothing like seeing 99 on Kratos spinning his way to absolute bloodfest. And getting that S rank combo on a guy in mid-ar as Dante. In fact, I like it so much that I kind of regret the enemy not having any more HP as to keep it going.

So how does that tie in to MK? Well, let's take a look at Street Fighter for a second. The last two games in particular. Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix and Street Fighter 4. Both are considered awesome fighters. But there's one thing that has always bugged me: The combos... or better, the lack there of. There was even and ACHIEVMENT in SSF2THDR for doing a 7 hit combo... and it was hard as hell (still don't have it actually). Where as in the MK series (namely the two before MK vs DC mentioned above) was easy to set up 16 hit combos if you knew what you were doing.

You see, instead of focusing on special moves (which in SF, most characters shared similar moves... which is kind of lazy if you ask me [See: Ken, Ryu, Akuma, Dan, Sakura, ect]) Mortal Kombat focused on actual combos. Knowing which combos ended with a "popup" move would allow you to string many combos together. And MK took this so far as to give the characters multiple stances. This lead to some very dynamic and awesome combos. This is something Street Fighter has never (and probably will never) have. The only time you see SF get high combos is when it's part of a ultra move that's all one animation that you can't control once it starts (I'm looking at YOU Akuma). If you've played both recent Mortal Kombat titles and Street Fighter titles, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

And that leads me to MK vs DC. It seems that Midway saw it fit to do away with their past formula. Only like Baraka has two stances, I think. And ALL of the characters have a rediculous ammount of special moves, but no basic combos that lead to complex moves. So, it's turning out like Street Fighter in a quest to spam the most special moves and hope the other person isn't blocking.

Okay, so maybe it's not THAT bad. Street Fighter is still a very good fighter and remains on the top of the list on the populartity totem pole. But I really think that Mortal Kombat as a series was really starting to do things right. I played the absolute hell out of Deception and Armageddon, and I had much fun doing it. Also note that Deception was the fist console fighter to impliment online play back on the Playstation 2. It was slightly buggy, but it was fun as hell.

And that's ultimately why I have such mixed emotions about this. Midway was going in the right direction. It was exactly what I wanted in a fighter... but then MKvDC came out, and it changed... and now Midway might be dropping of the face of the planet for good.

So it looks like I'm going to have to settle for fighting a slew of Ken users in Kenfighter 4... er, I mean Street Fighter 4 instead. I'm going to miss what MK could have been.
