Star Trek is an American science fiction entertainment series and media franchise. The Star Trek fictional universe created by Gene Roddenberry is the setting of six television series including the original 1966 Star Trek, in addition to ten feature films with an eleventh in post-production to be released on May 8, 2009. The franchise also extends to dozens of computer and video games, hundreds of novels and instances of fan fiction, several fan-created video productions, as well as a themed attraction in Las Vegas. Beginning with the original TV series and continuing with the subsequent films and series, the franchise has created a cult phenomenon and has spawned many pop culture references.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the following are the ten best episodes of Star Trek:

"The City on the Edge of Forever"
"Space Seed"
"Mirror, Mirror"
"The Doomsday Machine"
"Amok Time"
"The Devil in the Dark"
"The Trouble with Tribbles"
"This Side of Paradise"
"The Enterprise Incident"
"Journey to Babel"

I think it's a solid list. But two that are not on there that have been faves for whatever reason are "Shore Leave" and "A Piece of the Action". I love getting the cast in goofy and strange situations like that.

To celebrate the series' 20th anniversary, Entertainment Weekly chose its "Top 10 Episodes":

"Yesterday's Enterprise" [15]
"The Best of Both Worlds", Parts I and II [16]
"The Inner Light" [17]
"Tapestry" [18]
"All Good Things..." [19]
"The Measure of a Man" [20]
"Sins of the Father" [21]
"First Contact" [22]
"The First Duty" [23]
"Chain of Command", Parts I and II. [24]

One again, a solid list from EW. However, they are missing a bulk of the episodes with Q in them, which are my favorite of the series. "Elementary, My Dear Data", which brings out Moliarty from the Holodeck is keen, as well.

As a kid I always thought the show was too weird for my tastes.

But then my friend introduced me to it and I enjoyed watching it whenever Spike would rerun episodes.

And he had me watch all 10 movies. Not all at once and not against my will. For that reason I actually enjoyed them. The crazy thing is there's not a lemon really in the bunch, they were all good, even the first movie.

What I really like about the tv show is the writing, which is flat out excellent. The plot of each episode is intricate and complex with attenion paid to every possible angle of the situation, and it (most of the time) fits incredibly well into the whole 'universal peace'.

All in all, it's an enjoyable series, and I wouldn't mind watching more of it. Do they still run it on Spike?

I used to love watching the orginal Star Trek (on reruns) when I was a small boy. The Next Generation came out when I was in college and everyone I knew (I lived in all guys dorm) except myself watched it religiously. I've only seen a handful of scenes, maybe only one or two full episodes, and two of the movies, but I respect it highly. I was even sad when I heard a slow piano version of the theme song (which I really like) when they showed a commercial for the last episode.

If you are into Horror, Sci-fi, and Fantasy, you have to at least respect Star Trek.

As far as I know, they run eps of Voyager at night. In the middle of the night, mainly.

My favorite Star Trek movie is Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn. The chitchat and match of wits between Kirk and Kahn is the glue that holds the movie together astoundingly.

My second-favorite, though, is Star Trek: First Contact. The Borg is one awesome collective of villains and the plot of the movie is strong, too. This feels like a movie! Insurrection felt like a long TV episode, though.

I'm gonna share a little secret with you that I was saving for another occasion.

The problem with Star Trek teleporter technology (yes, I know it's called "beaming") is that while Gene was a visionary, he just wasn't enough of one. If you have the ability to break something apart at the molecular level and then reconstruct it at another location... why not break it apart and not put it back together again? Scatter the atoms to the wind; or better yet, keep the usable elements in a storehouse for later use. The human body is mostly water. Keep the water, scatter the dust to the wind. Phasers? Photon torpedoes? Hey, I can literally make things disappear!

Now I know what you Trek nerds are thinking. The transporter beams can't penetrate shields. Yes, that's true. But that was a device invented for dramatic license. "Oh no! We can't beam him up because the shields are up and the Klingons are attacking!" Even if I have to play by your rules, I've still got the edge against everything except a shield. On the surface of a planet, I can make my enemies disappear at will. Out in space against your starship, all I have to do is knock your shields down (which inevitably happens anyway), then (blip!) your ship disappears.

Thank you, Gene, for inspiring the ultimate weapon.
