You mean Marrrrrrrrrrrria? I always found odd how hard is for english speakers to say that R. But then again, I had an american friend telling me the difference between leaving and living. (I think I was the first one to pronounce it right after a while) And I won't even start on sheet and... caca.

About that long, thick 'r' I always say to speak like 'h' in 'hunger', then the problem's gone =D

The 'r' in Maria is what some people call the 'japanese r', which is so light and quick it ends up almost sounding like an 'L'. There's no sound for that in english. I mean, there is, it's the 't' in 'water', but people never get it =P

Haha subtle differences in pronunciation are weird. Once I watched a 20-minute show of a German friend trying to explain to my Brazilian friend the difference between 'zehn' and 'zen'. It's a gosh darn H, that doesn't even have a sound!

Well, I'm talking about the same R.
I just remembered of a cartoon where they were trying to say Maria and Costa Rica, and kept saying Marrrrrrrrria and Costa Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrica. And that's how I've heard some people say maria trying to get the R right.
And yes, we know of Xuxa. She had her songs in spanish too.
