[quote]THE STORY
One year ago, my friend Sara Baker AKA Glory was on her way her way to
school. Sara was 19-years-old at the time, a college student, happily
in love with her boyfriend of a few years, making art and having fun.
As she was merging onto a highway, a reckless driver tried to pass her
on the right and hit her. The bump sent her flying out into traffic
causing her to lose control of her car. She tried to come to a safe
stop and pull to the side of the road, but something when wrong in the
last moment and her car was sent flipping over into a ditch on the side
of the road, bursting into flames.
Passers by came to her aid, trying to break the windows to get to Sara,
throwing mud on the flaming car to try and keep the flames from her.
Miraculously, she had no injuries from the accident. She is taken to
the hospital to recover, likely to wake up with a really bad headache.
However, in the hospital, Sara was struck by another attack, silent and
devastating: she suffered a stroke.
Sara is now what’s called “locked-in,â€

It really shows me how weak of a person I am. I probably would have asked someone to just pull the plug on me. I'm glad that there are people out there that will fight the odds reguardless of how unsurpassable they seem though.

I'm sure she is putting up with hell right now, but keeps telling herself she can handle it... or that it will get better eventually.

Choosing to pull the plug, like choosing to fight, does not necessarily make you weak. If anything what makes you weak (and I do mean IF anything) is making your choice without putting your own interests first in this case. In other words, you have no responsibility to suffer for someone else's wishes, to preserve someone else's happiness or to sustain someone else's hopes or dreams. When I say someone else, part of what I am referring to is the socially 'noble' notion that one SHOULD always try to fight. If the pain is too great, why isn't pulling the plug a respectible alternative (amongst other alternatives that you DO have)?

However, you can choose to make others happy or to give others hope even if some suffering is involved if it makes YOU happy FIRST. If you get absolutely nothing out of it you are enslaved.

I just want to be clear if I wasn't before. I am glad that this story gives people hope. That is absolutely a good thing.

Duel... please stop the one word responces. If you don't have a real comment or something to contribute to the thread, then don't post.

Honestly this is rather inspiring. I hope things work out for her.

@Lantis - I'm unsure what the difference would be if he came into the thread and said, "Cool, this is great." instead of just "Cool."

I personally got the feeling that he thinks this is an awesome article and if the only word he can think of to describe that is cool, then i respect that.

And yes, I'm intentionally blowing out my behind.

That is a real comment and it is contributing to the thread since it's a post.

I like the article. There, not much difference.

if we all posted the word 'cool' in every thread that interested us but not to the point of actual interaction with the subject we'd all have much higher post counts i think. <_<

when i was in training in my work they said about a deafblind guy who carried around this braillino and he got everyone to type on it then he would type back and that was his method of communication. period. a braillino of course is basically a typewriter that he can put his hand on a little strip of rubber that has the braille on it and it goes by his hand as the people type or something. but then english is pretty difficult to understand when you don't hear/speak, so i can imagine it must be more difficult still when you can't see either.
worst thing we get in my job is people who are like 'yeah i'm familiar with teh service' and then say to their friends 'oh god it's typetalk call' like they'd rather be having their teeth pulled and i think 'just because they are deaf doesn't mean _I_ can't hear you' ... sometimes people can't even be arsed to talk to their own family. bit of a piss of sometimes, cus you've still got to relay this call knowing the person on the end abhores every minute of it.. and they can be really rude about it too. but deaf people seriously put up with all kinds of sh*t like that all the time, people who can't be bothered to talk to them because they are deaf, people who won't take their calls, won't ring their flashing doorbell, keep ringing their mobiles. stupid people and discrimination of disability.

While it is a great story, how many people will TRULY be inspired by it? To be honest, every story I read makes me think about how much of a cakewalk and simple my life is without any major problems, but that's about all that happens. Once we're actually faced with adversity, we really feel inspired by something, especially if it relates to us.

Don't mean to be a downer, but that's just what I think about inspirational stories.

Inspirational stories are a way for you to know that, despite the fact that we start believing the contrary just as a difficult situation arises, some things that seemed impossible really are possible.

99% of people don't come to that conclusion by themselves, and need a little shove.

You know, it's very ironic. I wrote a song earlier last week called "Don't Give Up," and low and behold, a topic comes around with the same inspiration I'm trying to give. Yes!

Don't worry; your opinion doesn't depress me. It's my opinion that most of these kind of stories grate on a person after having read or heard so many of them. Their messenge is lost due to having heard this old song and dance over and over.

For some reason though, this story gives me hope, and I made this topic so it may inspire others like it inspired me.

This is non-negotiable. These forums aren't youtube videos where you can get away with one word responces. "Cool" doesn't contribute anything and no one cares how cool you think it is. Maybe if you explained why it was cool... or something that you know, had a little more thought behind it.
