[quote]No story has ever annoyed me as much as the Black Friday death that occurred at a Long Island Wal-Mart last week. What’s worse is that, right now, it doesn’t look like the police will be able to identify the perpetrators. They’ll walk away scot-free, content with having bought some piece of garbage widget for $5 less than they would have paid on any other day. That, and having killed a man.

The New York Times has a profile of the victim, one Jdimytai Damour, who was 34 years old. His friends called him Jimbo. By all accounts, he was simply a nice guy looking to make a few extra dollars.

For its part, Wal-Mart is pleading ignorance. Since on-site security is the responsibility of a subcontractor, and since each store is responsible for its own security arrangements, Wal-Mart doesn’t really know what to say to allegations that security was lax. A spokesman called it an “unfortunate incident.â€

The fact is this is reality, so rather than simply get mad at people and ignore it, why don't we use this as an opportunity to attempt to understand people as civilized humans, as primal animals, and as beloved children of an all good and all powerful god?

That's so utterly ridiculous... customers complaining when a man died? Then again, it is Wal-Mart. Cripes.

*sigh* Dammit, people can be so disturbingly petty these days. How can someone still be so worried about being able to continue shopping when another person died (I assume) just yards away from them?

With respect to the complaining customers, when they asked them to leave, had the worker already died yet?

It is one thing from a customers point of view to be asked to leave when you know the person is dead versus that he is being treated versus that he is being taken to the hospital.

Does anyone know?

Also, does anyone know what percentage of the customers were complaining versus those who were understanding? Did the news cover all the customers who were understanding? It makes it sound like possibly one or a few people were much more people.

it's a black friday when i agree with duelpro eh << ... but given what happened over playstations when they first came out are we surprised? and of course given the articles linked to in the post lantis has linked to we can see everyone is already playing the blame game.

There are so many things to consider in a case like this. I wish we could see actual footage to understand it. Put yourself there. Maybe there are people pushing you from behind because they can't see that someone has fallen. Then what do you do. You can't push back because the weight is too strong so you have to go forward. There is no time nor is there silence for you to yell someone has fallen before you yourself fall. There is no time to explain that someone who has fallen can get trampled and that someone who gets trampled can die. There is not time to argue the merits of whether or not waiting out all night gives you the right to rush trough the doors recklessly. All you can do is move forward and the only place you can step, maybe the only place you can step so as not fall yourself, is on the man who lies below you.

Here's a video from black friday at a walmart in 2007... I'm sure it went a little something like that, just to a worse degree. I can't find security camera footage anywhere yet. You'd think that would get leaked really easy, dispite what happened.
