Edit: Here's a link to the main GameLegacy thread:

GameLegacy Thread of Importance

Howdy. You know how I'm not gonna be doing Mag-related stuff much? Well, I guess that's true. But I'm gonna be doing a lot of community-wide things. Specifically our game archive.

Valk and I started talking about the importance of making the community's archive future-proof. The PS3's PSV saves will enable anyone with a copy of RPG Maker 1/2/3 and a USB drive to enjoy all of the games that have been created since 2000. No Dexdrive or Action Max Reply required.

This will apply to all full games and only to demos that are really good or technically significant.

If you have the technology for tranferring games saves (Dexdrive for RM1; Action Max Replay/Sharkport/X-Port for RM2 and 3), and would like to help the effort to keep the efforts of the community alive, give either me or Valk a reply in a thread or a PM. We'd love the help.

Last, here's the article from Valk on how to use PSV format saves:

How to use PS3 format saves

This will be a long process, but it will get done.

speaking of which, I just had Ixzion update the mag's copy of the game. The pav got an updated version back in 2005, and it'd be a pain in the ass to do this project if we didnt all have the same versions of the games we're gonna be converting.

As soon as I get my TV back so that I may be able to use my PS3 again, I will be able to help with all the PS1 conversions.

I heard that all remaining PS3s are not going to have backwards compatibility, so these saves are only as good as you have an older PS3, right?

The only model of PS3 that doesn't have backwards compatability is the cheaper end one. Those will never have backwards compatability. Though the higher end always will.

Yes, that is what I originally heard, but my friend who just bought one told me that he learned that even the future high end ones won't have it. He might be wrong, but that is what he heard.

Somehow I highly doubt that... Though I've been wrong in the past.

Sony won't have PS2 support in any PS3 models for quite a while. the 40 GB versions don't have PS2 compatability, and the new 80GB versions that come out after the MGS4 bundle goes away won't have it either.

but they'll all still play PS1 games.

Which is why I won't be buying one. Every game thats worth playing is coming out on Xbox 360 now anyway. My friend sold his ps2, got a ps3, and I ended up having to buy him a ps2 just so he could check out my games. Well it was a bday gift, but still, totally lame and asinine of them to do that.

I just got finished reading a few things. And that's honestly one of the dumbest things I've heard. Makes me glad that I got one so early on.

Anyway, I can still convert the PS1 games to PS3... which should still play reguardless. Hopefully, this is just temp and Sony will make the next shipments of PS3s fully B/C like they have been (and should be).

It's completely ridiculous but I won't go into that now.

From a preservation point of view, is the file system such that you think the PS4 would be able to use it. In other words, it is significantly like a more universal hard drive format? I know we don't know what the PS4 would have but the reason I ask is that when I first bought the PS2 I couldn't wait to play my PS1 survival horror games. Little did I realize that I needed a PS1 memory card for those because my PS2 card was useless for the PS1 format.

In other words, even if the PS4 is somewhat backwards compatible to the games, it may not be to the PS3 saves unless there is a way to transfer those saves to the PS4 somehow.

The Mission GameLegacy would then be only as good as those who already have the correct model of the PS3 and that's it, unless for some reason they actually decide to re-release backwords compatible PS3s again or make it possible to transfer PS3 saves to future PS models.

EDIT: I guess my comments only relate to RPGM2 and RPGM3 since RPGM1 saves should still be OK on any future high end PS3s, right?

...for now :skeptical

It would seems to be the easiest route for sony to take to make future formats be the same as they are for virtual memory cards. With that said, I think that getting this data converted once should last us a very long time. And even if sony did change the format on 4, the time until then still warrants the effor to convert it for just 3.

even though you won't be able to find PS3s with PS2 support in stores for much longer, they'll be available online for a long time. the 20GB system, the 60GB system, the 80GB motorstorm bundle, and the 80GB MGS4 bundle all have PS2 support.

Sony has said that going forward, backwards compatability isnt going to be important to them. I believe the only reason they're saying this is because they just launched yet another hardware revision for the PS2, and the PS2 is still selling. they want people to own both, since they actually make money off the PS2 hardware.

once the PS2 is dead, we'll probably see backwards compatability come back to the PS3.

I really do think the PSV format is the best way to preserve these games. very few people still have functioning dex drives, and they're so badly made that even the people who own them can't always use them. the max drive doesnt work on the PS3, and its getting harder to find now.

Btw, I've recently got a hold of my TV again. So I now have HDMI feed again... which means I can get games converted... at least for RPG Maker 1.

So I'll go ahead and start working on that on monday. Hopefully it won't take but a few hours for a few days.

Make sure you check at the pavilion to see which games are already converted. don't want to waste time on stuff that's already done.

I am at end-of-school crunchtime. I am almost out of school!

I get out December 11. After that, I will start to go at it full steam ahead.

My PS3 crashing kind of put a halt on this for a while. I should be able to pick it back up whenever I feel like droning out for a few hours. But given the time of year this is, that may not be happening all too frequently.
