No big surprise. At E3 2008, Nintendo confirmed (very vaguely) that the Mario and Zelda teams had reassembled, but offered no further details. But when we sat down with Shigeru Miyamoto this week, he elaborated on situation, absolutely confirmed that a new Wii Zelda is underway, and suggested that it will see some fundamental changes.

"The Zelda team in particular always works on Zelda titles. The core members of the Zelda team have for a very long time now been focused on Zelda games, and continue to focus on Zelda games, so they are hard at work and working away," Miyamoto said. "And then, of course, we have the DS Zelda team as well, so even there we're having some switching of people in and out where the DS team is mixing in with the Wii team and working on the Wii version."

At GDC 2007, Eiji Aonuma gave a presentation on The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. At that time, he showed a brief snippet of an experimentation the Zelda team conducted -- it was Twilight Princess running in the first-person view. We asked Miyamoto if such a fundamental change could await players of Wii's next Zelda adventure.

"I don't necessarily think it will change that drastically, but I think that Zelda is a franchise that does need some big new unique ideas," he said. "And so the team right now is very focused on trying to find those ideas."

I have heard rumors that they were going to mix up the formula, after how many people were saying Twilight Princess felt too much like other Zelda games.

When will it be that companies realize that more of the same isn't necessarily a bad thing if it works?

The Zelda formula is what keeps people coming back. I hate the DS version. I don't need gimmicks, I need a solid ARPG.

I agree. In fact, I loved Twilight Princess so much that I was able to ignore the fact that it's basically Ocarina of Time with a different villain and different objects to collect.

No, seriously, that didn't bother me. I didn't even realize the similarities of the plot's course of the first three dungeons until somebody pointed it out.

I actually agree with Duel. I liked PH because it was different.

I mean, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are good games, but at the same time they borrow a lot of elements from OoT. It's not fun doing something that was already done in a previous game, and I most enjoyed differences between Twilight and the other Zelda games, like a real-time lighting lantern.

Make it different. Dare I say, make it very different!

I enjoyed Twilight Princess the most out of all the Zelda games. Probably the most challenging of all the Zeldas I've played.

I think that Majora's Mask is probably the most over-looked Zelda. People will just play for an hour and give up before it really get great. I've played it like 3 times, and the last time I took the time to get every last thing avalible from the game... and man, people are missing out.

Quite true.

I love the time after midnight on the 3rd day. So chilling. Like the entire world is meeting it's doom.

I beat Majora's Mask. This game is the hardest if you get every mask. A few of the masks are a pain in the ass to get and took me multiple tries. :( But I would up getting them all. It was better than most gave it credit for.
