Okay, so, I spend a lot of time on youtube.

I go there a little while ago and see this video at the top of the featured list.

I watch it. Totally unimpressed.

I read the comments.

People are amazed. Posters are speaking with big words and citing books about this concept. People are referencing mathematical formulas.

And the only thing I could really think was that this is possibly one of the most logical concepts I have ever seen get featured on youtube. There is nothing complex going on here.

The person in the video is a university student, who apparently thinks he's stumbled on to something amazing.

Seriously, a grade school kid could figure this out. Why is there books? Why are people throwing around their school-peen? Apparently, some people didn't have toys in their pools as kids.

That the metronomes eventually get on the same cycle is basic physics. Therefore, it's safe to say they haven't taken it yet.

The point is that you don't have to take physics to understand how this works.

I mean, seriously. A set of metronomes on their own is no different, really, from a set of objects in free fall. They're going to do what they do with nothing really connecting them together.

But, if you have the same set of objects in a pool (toys, for example) just floating around, and then you send some waves at them, the hell do you think is going to happen?

I honestly think the fact this is even part of a physics class is completely asinine.

Yeah, you're right. But you have to have some clue of what might happen with them or else you'd never know.

I also spend some time in YouTube and I've come to one single conclusion: YouTube users are, in the most part, morons.

Although you gotta give them some credit.

Not everyone understands physics at the level you do whether or not it seems like they should be able to.

Also, just because we know how fireworks work doesn't mean they don't make us go "oooh!" and "ahhh!".

Plus, you mean you haven't figured out yet that you can't rely on YouTube user comments to indicate a perfect sampling of the entire population. A grade school kid could tell you that.

When did I ever say anything about the entire population?

I specifically pointed out that I was talking about youtube comments - AKA youtube users, and nothing more.

I also gave my opinion about this concept being in a physics class.

I never insulted the entire population.

Well unless you are talking about everybody, of course some people are going to be amazed by something that is new to them, why does that surprise you.

EDIT: Not everyone has seen this.

EDIT EDIT: Are you saying that you are surprised that more YouTube users aren't posting that this is unimpressive because maybe only the set of YouTube users who are impressed are the only one's out of the entire population of YouTube viewers who are posting about it.

I'm saying I'm surprised so many people are amazed by this.

How the hell could you interpret it any other way?

OK. Let me say it another way. From my experience with the type of 'neato' viral videos that are all over Youtube, this is perfectly consistent. I am surprised that you have actually gone through the effort of selecting an individual video to comment on because I don't see how this is any different than the types of things you are likely to encounter. For example, all the guy did was show it and you read in "who apparently thinks he's stumbled on to something". Maybe the guy just thinks its the right venue to post a 'cool' video about a well known physics demonstration and those that aren't familiar with physics are impressed because it is not their everday experience and those that love physics are helping out by explaining it in more detail to others with the math.

And why would that much effort be necessary to explain such a ridiculously simple concept?

The entire problem with this video is that there is no mystery to it. There is nothing out of the ordinary going on here, and no objects involved that any random person won't understand.

And yet, after watching a video of such a simple (apparently, physics) demonstration, people are still asking OMG HOW DOES THIS WERK!!

I have no problem with the people who are part of classes that this may be relevent to, but I do have a problem with random Joe's needing in depth explanations to understand it.

In my opinion, something like this shouldn't even be in a classroom. It's too simple. It really doesn't take a whole lot of cognitive ability to understand this, and that is the entire problem and reason why I made this thread. Stupidity of youtube users amazes me.

Also, I didn't go out of my way selecting a "viral video". This was at the top of the featured list, which I stated in the second line of this thread.

Assuming things out of absolutely nowhere is not a good thing to do if you're going to join in threads and try to be really thoughtful.
