Everyone remembers Super Mario Brothers 2, right? Come to find out, that's not SMB2...

Take a look at this game called "Doki Doki Panic"

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/baUoK7h2rN4&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/baUoK7h2rN4&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

While the intro doesn't look all to familiar... I'm sure the gameplay will:

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/21M1AQq1HRs&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/21M1AQq1HRs&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

Amazing no? It's not over... here's the ending of Doki Doki Panic.

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WeKgKqoZonU&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WeKgKqoZonU&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

Get this. Doki Doki Panic was released in July 10, 1987. Super Mario Brothers 2? October, 1988 over a year later.

Sources:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doki_Doki_Panic
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Brothers_2

Amazingly, Doki Doki Panic had been around for quite some time before SMB2. And SMB2 pretty much just replaced some of the character and item models and re-packaged it for selling.

So that leaves us with one question: Where's the original Super Mario Brothers 2?

That's an easily answered question... The lost levels. That's right, Super Mario Brothers: The Lost Levels is the original Super Mario Brothers 2. And looking at it, it would make the perfect sequel.

Just look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mari ... ost_Levels

Besides, putting the lost levesl and our SMB2 together... just which one really looks like it would be a sequel? I'm amazed this isn't as widely known as it should be. But yeah... There it is.

I hear the reason was because Nintendo believed the Lost Levels were too hard for the American audience at the time.

The Lost Levels are avaliable for the Wii Shop.

I thought that while it isn't widely known, it was at least partially known.
But maybe I think this way since I knew of this years ago

Actually, after doing alot more digging, I found that you are right. It is a bit more known that I am giving credit. It's just something that I've never heard before.

Anyway, I think it was best put by this guy:

Huh, I did learn something new after all. I tought Doki Doki Panic only had once character, and that Ninendo decided to add the other 3.
I didn't knew about the GBA differences either (And that got me interested)
Makes me wonder what would have happened if THAT Super MArio Bros never existed... No Bob-ombs, Birdo, Shy Guys, Sniffits, and worst of all (I don't care much about the other ones), NO FLOATING PEACH!
I just can't picture my life without a floating princess, specially in the Smash games.
(In case, you haven't noticed, I'm a Peach fan)

Guarionex, I can't share you opinion of peach. And <a href="http://www.rpgmmag.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5552">this is why...</a>

And actually, with this knowledge we now know that Birdo not originally a Mario character. I believe all the other characters were actually brought in through some real mario title while Birdo first appeared in Doki Doki Panic.

Birdo doesn't belong...

Actually, while I believe (and noticed in the video, all those enemies did appear on the original game but...
Quote:
The game featured the mascots of the Yume Kōjō festival — a family consisting of siblings Imajin and Lina and their parents, Papa and Mama — as its main characters. The rest of the characters, including the main villain, Mamu (Wart), were all creations by Nintendo for the game.

So while they were not original Mario characters they (even Birdo) were still Nintendo characters that just were adopted to the Mario franchise.

And I still think Peach has some innocence somewhere. deep in her heart. (Ah, who am I kidding, she's probably indeed the evilest of them all, but she's still my fave)

... I could not agree with you more, Guar. Princess Peach for the win!

Besides, while the guy in that video you posted was quite humorous, I also think that his complaints about the (what we all had thought was second, anyway) second SMB were totally unfounded. So what if it isn't anything like the first? That's a good thing.

So, the Lost Levels title was the true sequel, huh? No wonder I thought it sucked. It was no different from the first; just ridiculously hard.

But wait... doesn't that contradict what you said here?

Sarah's Knight in Sypmathy for Bowswer thread wrote:
I think the writer summed up the Princess's true nature as blatantly and harshly as he could when he said:
Quote:
Lady Macbeth doesn’t have sh*t on Princess Peach.

.... Wow. She must truly be a creature from the most treacherous depths of the Abyss, daring to disquise herself as a sweet democracy-loving princess; ... Sarah's Knight will go banish such a demon from the world, now.

Anyway, doesn't matter if "Sarah's Knight" is a flip-flopping liar. The point here I think that because nintendo will go and take an already made game, change the sprites, and repackage it under a name that will sell better is really poor of them.

... Yes, I banished the demon masquerading as Princess Peach, and then found the real Princess who was imprisoned in another castle.

Suuuuuuuuuure you did.

Image

That's the most recent pic of her in any game, doesn't look what you slayed must have just been a clone of the real one... who is, in fact, still a cockteasing whore. Lol, at Bowser's illegitimate childrent.

Oh, and to be relivant with the topic: I heard Nintendo's making a new game!

Image

It's legit... I swear. Nintendo wouldn't just copy an entire game, you know.

As evil as Peach can be, she would NEVER wear something like that. (At least in public) :P
Anyway, while not the real Super Mario Bros 2, it's still one of my favorites ones. In a way, I'm glad they did what they did because otherwise, I don't think I would have played Doki Doki Panic.

Um, hate to disagree, but...

Image

Nintendo has always milked the franchise.

And for good reason.

Yeah, but Mario Party has always been a Mario game.

I guess I'm just referring back in the 1980's only. It's just a b*tch move to take Doki Doki Panic and slap "mario" on the title just to get some extra cash.

It.. clearly wasn't an effort to make extra cash, though.

They released it as Mario 2. We didn't get two Mario 2s, we didn't get two games at the same time with one being a total fraud. We got one game marketed as Mario 2, and several years later the original Mario 2 under a different name as an extra in a collective of games.

The only thing I can really see that could possibly be attacked is the fact that they later ported our Mario 2 into a remake and still called it Mario 2.. but, really, everyone's on the port bandwagon these days. Retro is the in thing, like always.

I'm sorry, but I really don't see how this is such a shallow move.

It's not horribly shallow... but just a little sh*tty that they exploit the mario name just for money. Money > Fans.

Which is just a little discerning, that's all. In fact, every game manufacturer can probably be called out on something. I guess this is Nintendo's.

Well? Apparently Doki Doki Panic didn't make it over here. All the sudden, it's a mario title and american gamers will buy it without question. Seems pretty simple to me.

So, the fact that we didn't get the original Mario 2 doesn't factor in to this at all?

Even if they didn't re-release Doki as Mario, we would have still got a Mario 2. It probably still would have sold just as well.

It's not like their market was increased greatly over this. They didn't start getting extra money until its release as Super Mario USA in Japan, which is the only shallow move I can notice.

I think your distaste is going toward both the wrong title and the wrong.. year.
