I was wanting awhile back to mod my PSP so it could play PS1 games, but I never really found out how to do it.

I have a "fat" PSP, where do I start?

Start in the link feros gave a page back It has links to all the files you will need. That's what really helped me. Then do some google and youtube work. Find out if it's something you can do. (If I can do it anyone can)

It's not too difficult. First get yourself a pandora battery or make one. I opted for the latter. Buy a new battery and open up your old one as the vids on youtube show you. Then run the programs the links provided you. Pop it into your PSP and BAM! you got a PSP+Awesome.

Heh, the best part is that it's not illegal... it just voids your warranty. ^_^

::edit::

I finished modding... everything went smoothly. It was actually alot easier than I expected. Even picked up a 4 gig card. Yay.

Hey, congrats Lantis on your successful mod.

I think I am ready for the next step. Case Mods.

I am still looking around but I like the idea. I probably will take this on in the very near future.

Heh... dealextreme seems to have quite a bit of stuff. All the coloured mods here are a bit to flashy for me, but I'll look around and see if I can find something that catches my eye.

Interesting note, there is not one single PSP game on the list.

So those people who pretend homebrew isnt hurting the PSP at all need to SHUT THE **** UP AND BUY A gosh darn GAME ALREADY. YOU ARE KILLING THE ****ING SYSTEM.

Not saying it's bad, but please, don't just use it as a mobile rom player. :x

Actually... there are some must play UMD games I must get (or have already) my hands on.

Valkiery Profile, God of War, Crisis Core, Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea, and I think there are two Tales Of titles as well.

Then there are others I would like to play like Astonishia Story and a remake of Breath of Fire 3. Also, there is a completely re-made version of Megaman X... everything is rendered in 3D and it's just awesome.

But back to modding and such... I'll be picking up one of these:

Image

It's a component cable for the PSP to be put on a HDTV. I'm going to do a bit of research to make sure it'll display in full screen at decent quality first. Also, come to find out, I had a slim and didn't know it. The fat PSPs don't have an video output.

::edit::

Ordered the cable... I'll let you know how that turned out.

Oh... and after looking around, I'm really thinking about getting a transparent faceplate and matching buttons.

While the clear analog and buttons are nice, they are for the PSP-1000(fat) and are slightly different shapes than the PSP-2000(slim). The analog is obviously different if you look at the pics side by side while the d-pad is harder to notice but different still.

I will be ordering my case mods this weekend. If all the reviews are typical, I should have them in around 1-2 weeks.

I find it awesome that, no matter how technological and micro-electronic we get, there's always something that still requires you to open batteries, connect things, and all-in-all do stuff manually yourself.

Actually, since then I've read that even if the buttons did fit, they feel alot less comfortable and responcive than the stock buttons. With that, I'll probably just do the faceplate and leave the buttons and analog the way it is. I still thing it would look pretty nice, myself.

I read the same. While it may be true, the way I see it, for like 5 bucks its worth checking out.

I also am thinking about that cable you picked up. Let me know how it works out for you.

Funny thing actually... I have the cable, but the gf still has the psp. She's only so far as nibelheim with the big
Tifa gets her ass pwnt by sephiroth
scene. But I do get visitations rights to the psp. I should be able to find out before the weekend. So I'll let you know.

What worries me about it though, is that some reviews said that the cable displayed the picture on screen all squished and it didn't even take up the screen... leaving alot of the area black.

Well, my screen is wide like the PSPs so maybe it'll be able to at least do 1:1. If not, I'm sure the PSP 2000 has video setting to MAKE it fit. It just sounds really dumb on sony's part to make a video out sources and not give you the software to manipulate it.

Ah well... we'll see.

Here's how to back up your PSP games onto your memory stick.

1. In the XMB (Main PSP Menu) hit Select
2. Scroll down to USB Device and press left so it says UMD Disc. Now exit.
3. Insert the UMD you wish to back up and go to USB mode (obviously connected to a PC)
4. Go to the drive letter assigned to your PSP and copy the game inside. They will all be named "UMD9660" by default. Once you copy it to your computer you can name it whatever you want.
5. Once its done copying go back to the XMB and press Select and change USB device to Memory Stick.
6. Go back into USB Mode and copy the game to the ISO folder. (or see below to convert to the smaller file type CSO)
7. Now exit USB Mode and go to Game. Select Memory Stick and the game should be there.

Now you have an ISO of the game. You can leave it like that and have the fastest load times. But if you want to keep multiple games on a single mem stick and you want to compress it, then I recommend using UMDGen to convert your ISO to CSO. Here's the download.
http://www.mediafire.com/?wt5z2mo2noh

Now in UMDGen, open the game you want to convert. Then go to UMD Properties tab and click optimize. This deletes unnecessary files like the Update and dummy files. Now just click the save button and choose CSO.
Depending on the number of dummy files, the CSO might not be much smaller than the ISO, like in Star Ocean Second Evolution. The ISO for SO:SE was 1.34GB and the CSO was 1.05GB. Not a huge difference but when you mem stick is getting crammed full, every little bit helps.

I personally turned off the UMD Disc in the Recovery menu so I don't need a 'dummy' UMD to run the backups. To access the recovery menu just turn off your PSP, hold R, then turn it back on. Once it loads up release R. However some games may or may not run without dummy UMD's so if it doesn't work for you just make sure that UMD Disc is on in the Recovery menu and put any UMD in the drive.

I must stress that this is only to be done with games you yourself own. Not rented or borrowed games as that is stealing and you might as well just go to WalMart and take the game off the shelf and put in in your jacket. Do us all a favor as PSP Players and Gamers in general and don't pirate. It drives up the price of the games we all want to enjoy. Only use backups to preserve your hardcopies.

How the hell did you find this out? If I only knew of this sooner, I would have backed up my SO:FD before I ever played it. ^_^

I forgot to mention that if you use a converter and the file type isn't in caps then you may run into some problems. Just make sure its in caps.

ex: game_name.ISO, GAME_NAME.ISO (either are acceptable)

I already mentioned this in Phantasy Star Portable topic, but it fits here much better.

To "tunnel" (connect adhoc [local wireless multiplayer] over the internet) PSP games, check out this amazing guide from xlink kai.

General important info
PSP WiFi Max - Vista
PSP WiFi Max - XP

I already did this and I did run into a couple problems along the way but the guide anticipated them and showed me how to correct them. If any of you have some PSP games you want to play multiplayer, hit me up. We can start this in Mag Online even if people get the WiFi Max and more importantly PSP's. I think its just Lantis, Karr, Jamos, and I that have PSP's...

Necro Post of worth while

Making your own eboots
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LURuXJNZeLc
If you plan on making your own sound file to play in the game selection screen, then install the atrac3 codec (google it) in your pc. If you are having troubles getting it to work, download and install GoldWave to use to create your sound files, then take the .inf file from the atrac3 download and copypaste it over to the GoldWave installed directory. Then change .inf to .dll.
In GoldWave, save your sound file as .wac, under attributes choose atrac3 132kb. Now Save As SND0.AT3. You may need to delete the .wav extension from the file and you're all set.

PSP Apps-
*** Read the Readme files included. Some are capable of bricking the PSP. ***
Screen Shots anytime on PSP- http://www.megaupload.com/?d=FQ3T4LWY
Read Text files and some other files (good for ebooking!)- http://www.megaupload.com/?d=RH9ZDQD2
File Management within PSP- http://www.megaupload.com/?d=BOJBPTJ0
Custom Theme Pack- http://www.megaupload.com/?d=E41JHQZ5

I have more that I can't remember the source for. If I remember I will post them.
Including: video capture, save state capability, google maps (wifi connection required- obviously), ability to sync with pc and exchange files using wifi, psp to psp adhoc file transfers, and oh the list goes on.

I love my PSP

Dual Stick Mod

Epic

And adding two SD card slots to the psp

I would LOVE to do this one!
But I would prefer to add two memstick pro duo slots and just use micro sd to ms pd adapters.

Why, oh why, did Sony not put in a second analog stick on the PSP. I can not for the life of me figure out why on earth they didn't.
