You may not have heard of StarTropics. But it and it's sequel are two of the best NES games ever made:

As you may have guessed, the protaganist of the game, Mike Jones (Who?), uses a freakin' Yo-Yo as his main weapon! He uses this and other magical items to travel the seas around C-island (shaped like a C, too) in order to confront the evil Zoda, who's kidnapped his Uncle J.

In the progress of the game, you talk to NPCs in towns, while playing action stages like the one shown above in that fashion.

In this game, the game's main character, Mike Jones, went back to high school after his previous journey. Later, he received a telepathic message from Mica. She told him how to decode the cipher that his uncle, Dr. Steve Jones, found on the Argonians' escape pod. Mike visits his uncle, who was now living in Seattle. Dr. Jones was hard at work researching the cipher when Mike found him. Dr. Jones believed that the answer to the cipher had something to do with the Oxford Wonder World, a book that he received from a wise old man some time ago. After using Mica's message to solve the cipher, Mike held the book and spoke the cipher out loud. As he said it, he was transported through time to the past.

As the game goes, he has to travel throughout time to get back to the present, where he confronts Zoda for the final time.

In this game, Mike can move and shoot in all 8 directions (as opposed to the 4-directional from part 1), and isn't confined to square movement.

Each game is wonderful, and you should play them.

Heh, funny to see this come up.

I argue that Mike taught ness how to use the yo-yo in combat. >____>

This guy does commented runs of games (commonly called Let's Play), and he's done both StarTropics and ST2.
He's a wonderful Let's Play-er and totally entertaining. ^^

I haven't watched his ST runs yet, but I might as well because of this. =3

The concept of the game looks really fun. ^^

It looks a little zelda-ish. Is that at all correct?

And, forgive me, a lot more fun than Zelda 1 or 2, imo.

Ixz would not have discovered this game if it wasn't me for buying both copies from Toys R Us in the 90's for 10 bucks each! :)

Yes, that's true. I had never even heard of the game. But those were some awesome moments then.

... Indeed, you must. These two were the only good NES games that could be found in the bargain bins of department stores back then.
I mean, who wouldn't enjoy playing detective underneath the foggy streets of London in order to slay a megalomaniacal alien being at the behest of some weird pointy-eared girl who only knows how to talk to you through telepathy?
I enjoyed the first Star Tropics quite a bit when it first came out, although to my undeveloped mind, I could not see any resemblance between Zelda and Star Tropics. In retrospect, of course, the similarity is obvious. Never played the second one, though.
