What kind of math do you like?

I'll post my favorite types/ branches later.

Damn you, I was going to make this topic. I had thought up the idea yesterday. You idea-stealer :lol

I've been taking Math 91 and have been doing some algerba, a little geometery and a little calculas I think. I tend to favor math problems where you have an unknown variable and have to solve for it.

Such as 7= x+2 <-This is just a simple example, but you get the idea.

Or something like -13=12x+11y

Something I'm not so fond of is distance/time/rate problems. Such as, if Ben left Chicago at 2 hrs, and then Mary left Chicago 3 hours later traveling 20mph faster than Ben, when will they meet? I have a difficult time figuring out the equation for solving such a problem.

And while we're on the subject of math, I've found it far easier to learn, since all you have to do is know the equation for solving it, and then use that to figure it out. I wish I had realized this while I was still in middle/high school.

And on another note for anyone who is taking a math class in college/high school: Do you do your homework online? My teacher requires we use a website called MyMathLab and do our homework there. It can be more convient because we can go back and solve problems before the deadline is due. So I can easily get 100% of the problems right.

I do them on good ol' paper. When I do them. Now that I think of it, in the past 2 years of high school I have not done (aka "completely ignored") like, over 90% of homeworks. ^^

As for what type of maths I like... well... if there is one that I like, it's the heavy, manual work. Y'know? Solving expressions and suchlike, without using calculators? My school teaches both the brasilian and the german methods of doing maths... I know the german start using the calculator at 8th grade or so and completely forget how to do anything without it, and the brasilian only get a calculator on college, because it is expected of the brasilian high school student that he can work well with numbers instinctively.
Needless to say I'm totally for the brasilian method and cluck the german one ^^

So, yeah. To answer your question. I like doing things like 5647830 x 56473 or 543 / 13 or 0,455 ^3 and so on.

Yeah, I've been known to anticipate a thing or two.

I didn't understand what the "it" was that you were referring to here.

Let me try and rephrase. Simply by learning the method of solving an equation, you can easily solve any problem by using the method and following the steps of the method.

Putting my thoughts down was never my strong suit.

I pretty much love anything to do with Algebra. I love solving for unknown variables.

Dang you guys, I can't do math for the life of me.

I'm more into languages, not math. Gotta say though, I'm jealous. :P

*Hall pass please?*

Algebra and Calculus.

But I'm so lazy to work on Mathematics.

There are compelling arguments to understand math as being a type of language in that it is an effective way of representing and communicating subjective or abstract ideas about objective reality.

The physical sciences are significantly dependent on the language of mathematics.

Really? Interesting...

My favorite branch from Mathematics is probably Algebra and Statistics, but mostly statistics, because it's really simple. Drawing the data table and searching means, medians, and modus. Though, if i'm not careful my answer could be wrong... :lol

But i'm having some little trouble with math these days. The problems are getting pretty difficult and tricky >___>

ah... i've always just liked whatever math they gave me *shrug* then we learned something harder and i liked that more... etc etc so on. though i'll say i found statistics really really boring....

supposedly people who are good at maths are supposed to be good at languages too, though possibly not the other way around as i've seen in many people.

for the last year i did math i enjoyed trig more than whatever else prolly.. not so much liked the graphic part of it but proofs did like especially. it felt nice to do trig proofs ^^

I hate trig proofs =P

Last maths test, I had a trig proof to do and after the third 0 = 0 came out, I gave up =/

On, the maths subject, who else hates when 0 = 0 comes out?

^ heh... i think the only thing i could say i hate is when i forget which way is right and which way is left and move my graphs the wrong direction >< cus it's a stupid mistake i didn't have to make instead of just not being able to figure out a tough problem which is the fun of it ^_^

I myself hated proofs in geometry. I like trigonometry more, but I guess that I was never really an angler. :lol

Algebra is fine, but sort of became second nature so I only liked it when I was using it in something like calculus, or physics problems, which I liked alot.

Statistics was boring but is very important.

Differential Equations and Linear Algebra (Matrices) were OK, but sometimes too hard and/or too boring.

Complex Analysis was interesting, and probably very important, but I never could really understand what my professor was talking about.

These days, I like branches like Set Theory and Mathematical Logic the most.

Statistics is one of my favorites.
I would say that I love Math in general but I HATE Pre Calculus and Calculus with a passion. And probably anything that comes after that. It made me realize how bad I am actually at math.
But I LOVE physic problems.

I guess so, but it is easy that's why i like it >__<

Mostly, because math uses logic while i think physics are more of memorizing the calculating method. That's why you don't have to think very long.

Oh, yeah i also find calculating Odds were really simple and i also like it. maybe it's because it has a close connection to Statistics. Now i can calculate the odds of myself getting all the money in the world! (Maybe not... >__>)

Oh, but I'm talking about the college physics. Believe me. you HAVE to think a lot and they may take a lot of time unless you don't use some logic.
That's what I like.

@BQ - ah yeah, permutations and stuff, had forgotten that unit. math was a long time ago :/ that was pretty good too.

doubt anything would ever beat trig proofs for me.

@bo - at risk of sounding like an idiot i say, i don't get it ;_; what does geometry have to do with fish?

@Sumisem
Well geometry is the study of spacial relationships and trigonmetry is the study of triangles. Both rely heavily on understanding the relationship of angles spatially (hence the angler comment :lol ):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angle

In high school geometry, most of our proofs of understanding if lines where parallellel, perpendicular, etc. depended on understanding if angles were congruent, incongruent, etc.

@Be@uty_Queen
I agree with Guarionex that unlike high school physics, college physics is all about understanding equations within certain conservation laws and hardly at all about memorizing per se. Most college physics problems do not even involve numbers except to modify variables. In other words the answer is usually itself an equation and the numerical values you would plug into the equation are just "details", so to successfully do college physics, one really needs to recognize mathematical equalities and think about the process of what is physically occurring.

... do fish or anglers understand spatial relationships better than most people?
