"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, pork chop in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, screaming 'F*ck me, what a ride'"

Some advice I recently received.
James Dean be damned, apparently.

Discuss, if it pleases you to do so.

well, i'd be inclined to say... well...

that the body is just a shell. not in some dualist mind/body way, but in that you have it and you have to use it in doing what you want to do. so...

do what you want with it. if what you want to do is burn it out, do that. if you can't be bothered, don't be.

i don't see any reason why a person shouldn't preserve their body if they want to do that. i don't think it's a case of telling other people what life is or isn't, either.

i think that having a norm as to what you should or shouldn't do with your own body is... senseless. laws appear necessary, but possibly they reinforce the idea that there should be a norm, a set of standards as to what one does with one's own body. so they're also dangerous (?), in their own way.

*shrug*

While I agree for the most part, I would probably lean more to the preservance side than otherwise. While our "shells" do burn out, I think it is human's desire to try to upholds one's self. Otherwise there would be much less fitness centers and atkins programs.

But then again, there are people out there that would just rather sit infront of the TV and rot. If that is their prerogative... than so be it. But if you look outside the human race, the nature of every other living creature is to strive. So is to burning out your body to deviate from the ways of nature? Maybe... Maybe not. Either way, it'll depend on the person, and will differ accordingly.

As far as I'm concerned, it sounds stupid. While you don't need your body after you're dead, why would you destroy it as fast as you can while you're alive?

I totally disagree. While creatures need to do what they can to survive, like hunter or gather food and find water, most of the rest of the time other living creatures are sitting or sleeping.

Unfortunately, HUMANS have an ideal such that this type of laziness (even when all other responsibilites are taken care of) is considered negative.

I think it is unfortunate because many humans (even after taking care of their responsibilities) believe they are here to do 'more' instead of just enjoying doing nothing. I respect those humans who enjoy doing more, but I think those who just want to do their responsibilites and nothing more should also be able to recongnize that this is a respectable lifestyle.
