@lantis - would you say teen titans is a cartoon? cus it has a continuous plot.

*points at Kajak's previous responce*

I pretty much agree. It's America's failed attempt at anime.

By being a 'failed attempt' that makes it sound like it did not succeed in acheiving existence as anime whereas Kajak seems to be saying it did achieve existence as anime but not a very good existence.

So which are you saying?

I'm saying it is anime... just a pathetic excuse for anime.

Bump...

Is looney tunes an anime? If not, then there's definately a difference between anime and cartoons. And if that's true... they really can't be the same thing, in any scenario.

Actually, the tie in the poll is just kind of getting to me. ^_^

Hmmm can you see people dying horribly in a cartoon, the answer is yes. I believe anime is the style of the cartoon, let alone the origin.

So you think the casualties in anime and cartoons is the joining factor that makes them the same?

Care to elaborate?

I vote yes.
Although if I had been asked the question back when I was an Anime nut, I would definetely have answered no. For two reasons.

Anime used to be completely separate from american/non-japanese cartoons because it was more mature and serious than american cartoons, which were almost universally targeted to kids. With the advent of shows like Family Guy, South Park, and uh... the entire Adult Swim lineup, cartoons have become part of the market for adults.

Also, it seems that the need to separate Anime from Cartoons seems to come solely from Anime fans themselves. Cartoons have a stigma of being kids stuff, whereas Anime most certainly is not, but to someone unfamiliar with Anime, it just looks like a cartoon. Anime fans, being mostly adults and young adults, don't want to be thought of as immature so they don't watch cartoons. They watch Anime.
It's all just semantics.

I agreed with just about everything you said until you said it is just all semantics which got me thinking that the reason that it might not be just all semantics is based on the origins of Anime.

Where did the first Anime come from and what was it's intention, BUT then did Anime come from completely independent origins than cartoons, or were Anime artist looking to 'create' serious or mature cartoons?

It may be semantics to call it Anime if it actually is a branch of cartoons (depending on the actual origin of Anime) but it is not semantics if the development of Anime is completely independent from a cartoon basis.
