If racist and sexist jokes are offensive, why aren't fat jokes (or tall jokes/short jokes, etc.) also offensive?

I think they kind of all need to be lumped together as "ethnic jokes". And while they are offensive... that's kind of what makes them funny.

Well, that's assuming you don't fall into any of the sub catagories. But even still, I've been the end of a joke that while offensive, I was able to laugh it off and go about my day.

Personally, if it wasn't ment to be offensive towards you specifically, I really wouldn't make a fuss over it.

It depends on the person you aim the joke at. Depending on someone's personality, they might find it funny or just down-right offensive. I always find jokes that are aimed at me funny.

They aren't aimed at 'a person' but rather a group of people... which is why a single person really shouldn't get that upset over it. They are never aimed specifically at one person unless it was just to be malicious.

Ethnic jokes might be uncouth, but ya laugh because they're based on truth. Don't take them as personal attacks. Everyone enjoys them, so relax.

Actually, yes... yes it does. If I expect to be able to laugh at a ethnic jokes, I got to learn to roll with the punches.

I make fat jokes and religious jokes and nationality (NOT race) jokes all the time. Alot at myself but always know your audience. I only joke infront of friends that get me and know where I'm coming from, which means I fall into the catagory I'm making fun with.

the thing about race jokes i find is that they are usually meant to insult .. and they usually ARN'T true.

like Kajak's song.. when jokes that sort of attack any kind of specific group are based on truth.. it's sort of funny. but it's like people's seeming obsession to call anything that screws them over jewish - which is basically saying that jews liek to screw people over. which.. isn't even CLOSE to true and not only because it's a generalisation, but as far as history goes jewish people have been very screwed over by various other races.. so it's even just totally backwards!

then there's like... other people that just sort of.. take things out of the water and call everyone and everything a jew, a negro, or a hippie. >_< .. which while it isn't meant to imply anything still sort of slaps around the name of some people as if it's nothing.

fat jokes on another hand... arn't about people who have any kind of beliefs specifically or history or background of any kind connected with being fat. they're just fat. probably because they eat too much. though there are people who have medical problems that make them like.. unable to lose weight or whatever no matter how healthy they are. but generally fat people are fat because of a lifestyle choice and they are horribly embarrassed about what they look like they should go outside. because if you are hurt by a fat joke, it's based on the truth that you are fat. basically >__>

and in all honestly, i love canadian jokes, i love blonde jokes, i love woman jokes, (well... those three when they are based on truth mostly. or at least horribly whored out stereotypes. otherwise it just doesn't make a lot of sense.) and i acutally find it funny when people try to stick magnets to my face. i just glare because it's funny to glare and say 'screw you!' and act all 'omg hate' because it's part of the joke, right?
