Purloined pug tale leaves owners sad

DALLAS, Texas (AP) -- The holidays were sad enough for Kim Velevis and her husband after their lovable pug "Scooter" dug its way out of the backyard and disappeared on Christmas Eve.

Rob Velevis holds a laptop with a photo of Scooter while Kim holds the letter, cash from an anonymous source.

But the real blow came with the new year: A letter from an anonymous woman who had found the friendly dog and gave it to her daughter as a Christmas present. To compensate for Velevis' loss, a $20 bill was enclosed.

"The puppy has a different name now, but he has plenty of food and toys. My daughter adores him. He sleeps with her every night," said the letter, which arrived Wednesday.

Velevis, 28, said she feels for the guilt-ridden woman, who described herself as a nearly penniless alcoholic. But she wants the dog back.

"We knew the first thing our Scooter would have done is find people," Velevis said. "He must have wandered up to this sick lady who, in desperation and in an attempt to fix her own life, ruined ours."

Velevis, who is 51/2 months pregnant with her first child, said she and her husband brought the wrinkly faced pooch home in July 2006 when he was about 8 weeks old.

Scooter could still be nearby. The typewritten letter, which carried a Tulsa, Oklahoma, postmark, said the woman found the dog while visiting her daughter in Dallas. She wrote that her ex-husband has custody of the girl.

The woman, who discovered an address on the pug's collar, described a series of difficulties in her life.

"I lost custody because of problems I had with alcohol, and I have lost everything else," she wrote. "I have been sober for 6 months, and I am trying to turn myself around, but I have lost everything. My little girl wanted a pug dog like your little dog (very much!)"

The woman wrote that she cannot ask for forgiveness, "but I do want you to know that he does have people who love him and are taking care of him."

Velevis said she has no interest in pursuing charges against the woman and would be glad to purchase the woman's daughter another dog. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend

Losing a dog that has been with you for a long time is like losing a friend.

people are dumb. if the animal had a collar on, which it did according to the letter, wouldnt it make sense that it belonged to someone and should be turned in to be reunited by its owner? i guess that would make too much sense.

i bet the lady really sold the dog for booze money.

cides, its not something you want to teach your child. that its ok to steal and give it to someone else as a present.

Dude, first off, a pug is worth WAY more than $20.

THIS ASIDE.

When my current dog got loose, I was DESTROYED. A dog isn't just a dog after you have grown to love it. It is family, and I see what that lady did as kidnapping and giving back money for something you can not replace with such means. Luckily, the family who found my dog alerted us, and I was relieved to pick her up.

I don't care how hard she had it since there was an address tag on the little guy's collar. You give that dog back. You know SOMEONE is miserable right now too, so perhaps at the very least if your life sucks it feels good to give. Then perhaps adopt a puppy of your own from the pound if you really want a dog after that.

I'm sorry, but after I lost my first dog ever like this, that chick needed to give that dog back more than anything.

The dog was stolen to make someone else's Christmas happy. At the cost of what? Making someone else's Christmas miserable? I agree with Fayorei.

Don't think the dog was stolen for profit. Because if it was who would write a letter with 20.00?
This is a sick woman that should not have children to begin with. Because if shes this ill minded to steal things for her kids then its a bad place for a child to be living with these people.

There is an actuality to this situation. She actually has a child, she actually has problems, she actually feels bad for what she did, but she is actually being selfish by placing her own happiness first before the other family who originally had the dog.

Also, people are actually abhorred by this and I am actually responding.

The point is that ALL of our behavior is natural depending on circumstance, some of which is that we are not in her place psychologically and she is not in ours.
