For whatever reason, Scientology has pissed off that super-elite hacker kinda-group, Anonymous:

http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2008/0 ... attac.html

Quote:
War Breaks Out Between Hackers and Scientology -- There Can Be Only One
By Ryan Singel EmailJanuary 23, 2008 | 2:16:38 PMCategories: Hacks and Cracks

A loose confederation of online troublemakers who call themselves Anonymous have declared war on the Church of Scientology by flooding its servers with fake data requests, describing the attacks as punishment for the Church's alleged abuse of copyright laws and alleged brainwashing of its members.

Anonymous congregates on the net at various hangouts such as 711chan.org (NSFW) and partyvan.info and sundry IRC channels. The group usually amuses itself by stealing passwords to downloading sites and finding ways to harass online communities that its members disdain. They were last seen on THREAT LEVEL when a Los Angeles Fox News affiliate ran a story that hilariously implied the group's arsenal included exploding vans.

The attack on Scientology, which Anonymous has dubbed Project Chanology, started in recent days, set off by the Church's most recent attempt to censor the internet by forcing sites to remove a creepy Tom Cruise Scientology video. A wiki set up for the project directs Anonymous members to download and use denial of service software, make prank calls, host Scientology documents the Church considers proprietary, and fax endless loops of black pages to the Church's fax machines to waste ink.

From the Wiki page for Project Chanology:

Let our message ring out from the highest e-mountain.

So you want to join Project Chanology eh? Fight the good fight for the Internet? Or perhaps you are a skeptic, doubtful we can do anything? I won't lie to you. I am an /i/nsurgent first, a /b/tard second, and an all around Anonymous, but I know that for a fight against the Beast it will take more then possible even every chan combined could muster. We might be rivals; hell, we might hate each other's guts, but this goes beyond just us. The people of the Internet, Anonymous, the Goons of SA, the YTMNDers, various hacker groups, trolls of the world, the GameFAQs members, the Gaians, the eBaumers; us old time Internet users, and the newest of noobs, the YouTubers and MySpacers, must band together for a fight that transcends our differences and takes us to a level beyond our individual selves. When things happen to Scientology, like that South Park episode or Tom Cruise going insane on Oprah's show, Scientology loses lots of credential. We need to finish that off, or leave it open for the major media to deliver the coup-de-grace.

Anonymous has also sent out a press release and issued this video manifesto:

The Church of Scientology was founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard in 1952, and has a large presence in Los Angeles. Scientology's core beliefs center on overcoming traumas from earlier lives, something overcome through sessions with a Scientologist "auditor" who uses an "e-meter" to measure electrical changes in the petitioner's body.

The highly secretive Church of Scientology is liberal in its use of lawsuits to attack its critics and to have Church documents removed from the internet.

The Church of Scientology did not immediately respond to a call for comment.

Correction: This story initially reported that the Church of Scientology had issued a $5000 reward to identify members of Anonymous. That reward was issued months ago, seemingly in response to another online attack. Archive.org has a copy from July 2007.

THREAT LEVEL regrets the error and thanks commenters for pointing it out.

i hate scientology. i would easily call it one of the most dangerous cults alive today. the usa should of taken it very seriously when it was caught document stealing in the early 80's (?). this is not a religion, its a made up pile of nonsense from a guy with a mental disability, which uses evil practices to retain members and lure new ones. anyone who attacks this rabble deserves a medal of honor.

islamic terrorists want to put their anger to good use? someone tell them to go take it out on scientology.

to bad its not the crusade era or id join front line to take down this nonsense.

What grounds do you have for saying that, hyper, if you don't mind ranting a bit more for me.

you directing that at me?

if so then ill say that i spent a lot of time doing research to find out exactly what this was all about. the more i read, the more worried i became about what this garbage was doing to people. i can accept some pretty wild ideas as being a possible belief for someone, but with clear evidence showing that this was made up, with brainwashing techniques being used, undermining the justice system through frivolous lawsuits, using illegal tactics to gain information, this can not possibly be anything other then a dangerous cult. just read some of the whistle blower stories out there from tv shoes like 60 minutes, dateline, w five.

this cult is destroying lives and using the guise of "religion" to hide from taxes. the first decade or so of their existence they kept their funds on the open seas to evade taxes. the guy himself was a science fiction writer and remarked many times on how he should start his own religion since it was a good business idea. look at how they restrict information, only brainwashing it through your head when they feel your a sucker enough.

some countries have even taken steps to outlaw this garbage. they are tired of being pushed around and bullied by an organization that acts like the mob.

the sooner the world realizes just how dangerous this cult is the sooner we can move to erase it. the only great thing about it is that its rapidly shrinking, rather then growing. we can thank all the whistle blowers for that.

hows that for a two part rant?

Much satisfaction to be had from said two part rant.

My uncle, I think, is a higher up in Scientology, don't really remember him it's been so long, however. I do remember that he could never tell his mother where he was as a securitymandate.

I've had a few experiences with it, and have heard people's experiences with it, which tell me very different things, but then again everyone else is saying this.
I figure it'll end when the world ends. Not really too concerned about it.

Heh.
I now see that you aren't hyper, Karr.
You were so angry I just assumed that you were him, it seems.
That's interesting.

this whole thing always struck me as retarded hypocrisy.

how can they justify demanding the eradication of a system of belief on a defence of free speech and free interweb?

personally, i don't think there's much wrong with hypocrisy half the time.

4chan are more intolerant than the scientologists, however, and i can't really see how any rationalisation justifies their actions.

the thing is, i don't plan to complain about 4chan. i don't care about them and their crusade, nor about the scientologists they play at hating. Nor, likewise, do i care about the grossly overweight kids sat in McDonalds because they're too brainwashed to eat anything, you know, healthy. Or the rest of them; terrorists, dictators, the catholics forever whinging about abortion (WHY CAN'T YOU SHUT UP?) and the people forever demanding more rights, more, more, and less to pay for them. At anyone else's expense.

So many people should be quieter. One day of peace, honestly, would be very nice.

*shrug* wishful thinking.

anyway, if anyone had any sense, they'd shut up. noone does, so noone will. end of overlong story.

hihihi. don't be so serious.

i felt like killing a thread. and tbh, i couldn't care less about your dots, either; opinionated squirrel doesn't think you actually capable of communicating anything interesting, so he doesn't want to bother.

thank you so much for not replying in length. i honestly really appreciate it.

Guess they'll need to learn to swim?

"f*ck L Ron Hubbard and f*ck all his clones
f*ck all these gun toting hip gangster wanna-bes.
I'm praying for rain
I'm praying for tidal waves
I wanna see the ground give way.
I wanna watch it all go down.
Mom please flush it all away.
I wanna see it go right in and down.
I wanna watch it go right in.
Watch you flush it all away."

So yeah f*ck scientology, Anonymous FTW, But then again I'm not really a big fan of any organized religion, as they say it is the opiate of the masses.
