I found this rather interesting:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/ ... story.html

Quote:
After drilling for two decades through more than two miles of antarctic ice, Russian scientists are on the verge of entering a vast, dark lake that hasn’t been touched by light for more than 20 million years.

Scientists are enormously excited about what life-forms might be found there but are equally worried about contaminating the lake with drilling fluids and bacteria, and the potentially explosive “de-gassing” of a body of water that has especially high concentrations of oxygen and nitrogen.

More at the link, but basically this'll give scientist a chance to view stuff from 20 million years ago pristine! What kind of creatures exist?

This story is pretty cool. Hopefully there will be follow up. Looking forward to the results.

You know, there's totally a way to keep from getting drill fluids and bacteria from getting in there.

And that's to leave it the hell alone. If they aren't going to do that, then they shouldn't worry about it to begin with.

"I want to drive my car... but I'm worried I may put miles on it!" O_o

I was thinking of if they drilled, and it exploded and left a small crater.:P Does seem like something not to mess with.

Untouched subglacial lake: suddenly not so untouched. Subglacial property market worth plunges.
