There's no time limit for certain types of accounts. CTFxC has a nine hour video on there, for example. Most vloggers go for over half an hour regularly. The only reason it ever existed at all is to stop accounts that aren't trusted (that is, ones that aren't viewed by many people) from having an easy way to upload longer copyrighted content like tv shows. With a time limit, they'd have to at least have a minute understanding of video editing in order to do it which a lot of people just don't.

YouTube having been in the middle of a billion dollar copyright lawsuit for the last couple years (which is now over) kinda runs that point home.

Either way, producing original content that people actually watch results in the limits being lifted. LPs are not original content, and that doesn't mean Viddler is better just because LPs are better suited there.

This doesn't have anything to do with LPs, though. If it did, I would've posted in the LP topic.

But they are your forte and, without any doubt in my mind, are a factor in your complaints about time limits.

You're right. LPs aren't original content, and YouTube's time limit is why I like Viddler better. But I'd like the chance to be credited with a discussion that doesn't end after only a few posts, and if I let it be only about the issues with LPs, you just ended it.

5 minutes longer? That really doesn't make any difference from the price of rice in China.

And btw, the accounts that can go past the limit are no longer available. Anyone that doesn't already have one can not get one. Apparently Youtube can't take that feature away from those who already have it. I believe it's called a Director's account.

False statement is false. It is the case that certain types of accounts used to be able to upload crap longer than ten minutes any time they wanted (and, yes, it was directors) but that has been gone for far longer than most vloggers these days have been around (2006 or so? long enough for it to barely even be a factor). Now, there's only two ways to get the limits removed: be a youtube sponsor, or be a youtube partner. Both of these don't care what type of account you have.

Either way, all you have to do is make stuff that doesn't step on copyright toes that is still enjoyable enough for more than your friends and a small handful of other subscribers to watch.

Lulz. anyway, who knows, maybe they kept it at 10 because they were the leaders in video uploading on the net for so long and never had to compete with others but now they're catching up to viddler or whoever because more people are starting to use other services. at least i seem to see a lot of videos on other players more often. it could also be google's decision *shrug*

I think it's a good thing. It enables people who are doing good stuff to do more, which is probably more important than being bothered about the people who aren't.

However, their decision to have that auto-bar at the bottom of the window is NOT a good thing.

Greasemonkey gets rid of that. It's an add on for firefox that allows custom scripting. There's a specific script called Youtube Enhancer that makes Youtube tolerable. Aside from giving plenty setting and options such as direct downloading of video and mark beginning and stopping points, looping ect, they remove a bunch of useless stuff from Youtube.

And just last night came the update to get rid of that auto-bar thing at the bottom.

I haz a happy. Because yesterday I had to put up with it. I was watching gameplay footage from some random flash game and the next video that played was "how to remove a wart."

What annoys me is that a) it's automatically set to move on to the next video when the one I'm watching finishes playing (which is annoying because I usually wait until the video's over before posting a comment and because it doesn't know how to play my subscriptions in the right order), and b) that thing is finnicky about when it pops up, and it's like GO AWAY, I DIDN'T WANT YOU!

EDIT. Installed. The auto-bar is still there, and it's giving me enhancements that I don't want. How do I work this thing to only get rid of the auto-bar?

The options for Youtube Enhancer is that little clover looking icon just to the left of the video name. You should be able to use that to turn on and off everything you want. Though I can't possibly see a single thing that they've added that hasn't helped.

Youtube Enhancer just had an update, and after I updated it, the bar no longer appeared. Maybe the version you have isn't up to date yet. Or check the options... it may be there.

Never mind, I just went back to Youtube and that sh*t came back. But give it a few days, the guys who run Youtube Enhancer are pretty good about this kind of things. I'm sure they'll knock it out soon.

The thing that I wanted to quickly turn off was the NEW navbar that appeared under the video. I don't need all those buttons slowing the player down, and if I really wanted a larger viewing size, I'd go fullscreen.

The thing I always liked about Youtube was its simplicity, really. Go here, there are videos, you can link them, that's that.
Nobody needs the 500 buttons on their remote. They need Power, Volume, Channel Up, Channel Down.

even on the youtube bar you can turn autoplay off and make it smaller so it's only like the facebook (and now myspace as well) bar at the very bottom. but youtube has definitely gotten more confusing and awkward. it used to be easy. =(

Just thought I'd jump in and say that Youtube Enhancer has finally got an update taking out that bar at the bottom. Either that or Youtube took it out. Either way, it's no longer showing up for me.

They took it out themselves some time ago.

And it's been bumped up again, this time to OMGWTFYARGLEBARGLEARYOUKIDDINGMEOHHOLYGOSH1HOUR?!?!?!

However, if anybody intends to try this, make sure the upload page says something along the lines of "Your account is now enabled for uploads longer than 15 minutes." I'm under the impression that it might not be anabled for every account. If there is a determining factor, I don't know what it is. I'm certainly not popular enough to become a partner. Maybe it's how long you've been a member, or whether you've had any paddlings from YT staff.
